5.0 out of 5 stars Did not disappoint!, 14 Dec. 2012
Having been a fan of J.T.Colgan for some time (in her other incarnation as Jenny Colgan) I was most intrigued to see what she would do with Doctor Who. The results were exactly what I was hoping for and then some! I don't like to give too much away when reviewing but I suppose the key thing to point out is that the characterisation of the 11th Doctor is absolutely note-perfect. I think that's always the key with Doctor Who books because the risk is that the reader reads the words "The Doctor" without getting a clear image of which one is starring in the story! It's also nice to see our hero in new situations - I don't recall ever seeing the Doctor swim before! The story is set in the era of the Vikings and, as a committed medievalist myself this could have been a major problem for me. I don't necessarily demand historical accuracy from fiction but I do require historical plausibility if I am to enjoy what I am reading or watching. Fortunately, not a problem here. Some people may find the style too jokey but, then again, watch the TV series! Heartily recommended!

"Hero" is an enjoyable martial arts movie which, like many Chinese martial arts pictures, may surprise western audiences by its combination of knockabout comedy with quite serious themes. Essentially this is a tragic story that pits two gang leaders against one another, one backed by the British, the other by the local police. Into this volatile environment enters a gifted martial artist, played by Takeshi Kaneshiro, trying to make his fortune. He will have to face betrayals and the consequences of his own actions as he learns who his true frineds are and what being a hero is really about. Yuen Biao is as accomplished as ever in the action scenes and the movie should provide a decent evening's entertainment for fans of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivers on every level, 2 Jun. 2010
Any fan of Jackie Chan's Honk Kong heyday really needs to check this out. With many familiar faces from slightly more well-known movies like "Project A" and "Wheels on Meals", you won't be disappointed. The plot basically concerns the attempts of many different gangs of thieves and crooks to somehow profit from the arrival of a train full of rich people in a small town. Local good-for-nothing Sammo Hung must get his priorities straight and defend his home. That hardly matters as you'll be alternately dazzled by the outstanding fights and stunts, or giggling uncontrollably at the riotous comedy. The cover is, as usual, misleading - Cynthia Rothrock is in no way in a starring role in this movie. Nevertheless, her fight with Sammo Hung is probably the highlight of the movie from a martial arts perspective, although Richard Norton and Yuen Biao are also in typically impressive form. For any fan of the genre, this is a must-see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harry Potter in HD - What's not to like?, 18 May 2010
Well worth buying if you are a Potter fan, have an HD DVD player and can find a copy. The transfers of all the movies are done very well - they look and sound superb in HD. The boxed set itself is very nice, presented in a fun manner for kids and containing various extras, such as postcards and the like. An extra disc of special features exclusive to the box rounds it out nicely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining & enlightening, 18 May 2010
This review is from: Mafia Cop (Mass Market Paperback)
Although ghostwritten, "Mafia Cop" finds a plausible voice that makes it read easily and amusingly. This autobiography of a New York mobster's son who became a champion bodybuilder and decorated policeman, before being arrested and drummed out of the force is fascinating. Often seeming like a pitch for a movie, it reminds one that truth often is stranger than fiction. By the end of the book you will likely feel for Eppolito as he describes the way in which his family was held against him and he was forced out of the police. Be warned; you need more than a pinch of salt for this as, in 2006, Eppolito was sentenced to life imprisonment for involvement in multiple murders and was, after all, shown to be more mafia than cop.

2.0 out of 5 stars Missed opportunity, 12 Mar. 2009
This review is from: Dracula 3000 [2004] [DVD] (DVD)
Not the greatest cast in the world, the most ludicrously abrupt ending I've ever seen, I wasn't expecting much but I got slightly less. It has its moments, but overall this is a waste of a good premise. It's pretty obvious that someone was thinking of the crew of the ship in Alien: Resurrection when they put this one together - it's a pity they couldn't have Wincott, Perlman, Rider et al to play the characters in this crew! Only for vampire nuts like myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but ridiculous to call this "faithful", 12 Mar. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very enjoyable. At times rather (intentionally) funny, and beautifully observed in the way it echoes Nosferatu. It should be pointed out that, despite what some have said, this is in no way a faithful adaptation of Stoker's novel. To call it "perhaps the most faithful adaptation" implies a fair degree of unfamiliarity with the source material on behalf of whoever wrote the sleeve notes! A little pretentious, and very much one man's interpretation of what Dracula is "about", nevertheless a lot of fun for any fan of the Dracula story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relive the glory!, 12 Mar. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ok, we know it was a weakened Kiwi team (although quite a few survived to play in the World Cup winning team of 2008) but who cares? A 3-0 test series victory, including one of the most emphatic thumpings of modern times, this is a DVD that no British rugby league fan will ever tire of watching. Content aside, the DVD lacks bells and whistles - no extra features or anything - but delivers exactly what viewers will want: plenty of action, with the right side winning!

Vital [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth watching, 12 Mar. 2009
This review is from: Vital [DVD] (DVD)
Asano is fantastic in this movie, drifting through most of it with a palpable dissociation from the world around him. This is not a horror film, nor even a ghost story as such but more of a "magic realist" love story. Well acted, occasionally confusing, not fully explained but never unconvincing, I would recommend this to anyone who has the patience for movies that unfold steadily but gradually.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine piece of kit, 5 Feb. 2009
Excellent. Seems able to handle a decent array of DivX/XVid codecs and the DVD picture display is superb. Watching modern dvds is very close to a HD experience, at least in 1080I (the best my TV can manage). Bit slow to read a memory stick.
