5.0 out of 5 stars Clear-headed empiricism in this age of hype, 3 Aug. 2010
When I saw this book, my first thought was "what an excellent idea: instead of opining on CFS, why not collect data from a wide variety of sufferers and actually see what empirically worked". A good bit of clear-headed empiricism in this age of hype.

Regrettably, that is all it is. 50 stories from average CFS sufferers, told in their own words, with a summary at the end saying what the "most useful" therapy for each person was. I feel that Alexandra Barton could have gone a bit further. For example, she could at least have tabulated how many people each therapy "worked" for; doing this would have made it relatively clear that the 50 stories contradict each other; they each find one therapy that "worked", and "made a great difference to them", but it's a different story coming from each sufferer. It is hardly ideal for a sufferer like me to hear about 20 different therapies without some kind of explanation (or at least attempt at investigation) of which ones are real cures, which ones are placebo effects and which ones were completely coincidental actions that happened to coincide with a spontaneous remission from CFS.

Also, it is hard to judge the "effect strength" that each patient experienced, as no quantifiable measures of degree of recovery were measured (for example, how many hours of work can the patient do? How many hours of sleep do they need?)

I think the book was worth reading just to read Anna Hemmings' story at the end. She managed to get CFS and then recover well enough to win three gold medals. How's that for effect strength? I won't spoil it and tell you what method she used, it's a good book compared to the utterly lousy competition, you should buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for £10, 14 Oct. 2008
This antenna worked for me: I got a signal strength increase from 24% to 39%, taking my WiFi bandwidth from approx 6 Mbps to a solid 11Mbps.

This seems about - I replaced my 4dbi antenna with a 9dbi antenna and got roughly double the data rate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just look at the ratings..., 24 Aug. 2008
Just thought I'd add another 5-star review to this masterpiece. The characterisation is awe-inspiring, the progression on Zakalwe's life is compelling: his relationships, his ambitions and motives, and finally his daemons. This is a rare work of literature in the science fiction world, and really stands out from the the glut of techno-babble filled action thrillers that we find in the sci-fi sector.

Read this book.

Altec Lansing AHP712 Active Noise Cancelling Stereo Headphones
Altec Lansing AHP712 Active Noise Cancelling Stereo Headphones

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, comfortable to wear and reasonable noise reduction, 31 Aug. 2007
These headphones produce pretty good sound - the bass is especially good, and with the right equalizer settings on your mp3 player (namely increase the high frequencies 4kHz - 10kHz) they sound excellent. Unfortunately if you don't have the noise reduction switched on, the sound gets quieter and less rich.

The noise reduction is reasonable - but only gets rid of low frequency noise, for example it will make the sound of traffic or of a computer fan disappear almost entirely, but the buzz of a de-tuned radio gets through. I've tested it out with a signal generator, and you get a reduction of about 15dB at 150Hz, and almost no reduction at 500Hz or above. Most noise reduction systems only respond well at low frequencies, but I expected it to be a little better than this. There is, of course, a high-frequency hissing produced by the NR, although this is not noticeable when you are playing most music - I was listening to some rock music and you really cannot hear it at all. The fact that this headset fits over your ears (rather than sitting on top of them) acts as an additional passive noise reducer, which I like.

The set fits comfortably and is adjustable, as well as looking fairly robust. Also of note is the generous range accessories that come with the headset - two different lengths of 3.5mm jack leads, a two-pronged adapter, a 5mm jack adapter, and a very nice padded(!) bag for the headset.

A slight downside is that these headphones are pretty big, and don't really fold up much.

Overall, these are pretty good, and I'm glad I didn't spend double the money on a Sennheiser.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, intuitive introduction to special relativity, 17 April 2007
This book is a masterpiece in science writing - it explains the basic principles of the special theory of relativity in a very very clear way. I read it when i was 16 and still at high school, and i think it was one of the key books (along with "the quantum universe") that lead me to study physics at university. It explains conceptually difficult issues thoroughly, and then moves on to the mathematics.

Advanced students will find this book plodding - it's strength is as a guide for people who are new to university level physics.

All in all a great introduction to special relativity!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just dropped it in the bath - and it still works!, 26 Jan. 2007
An excellent MP3 player. I dropped it in the bath, dried it out - and it still works! Durable or what!? The headphones are respectable the interface is good. (I have the earlier 128MB version)
