5.0 out of 5 stars An original remake, 18 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For anyone who hasn't seen the original evil dead and its sequel Dead by dawn may find the story slow with the horror really taking its time to start, but once it does you get quite the roll a coaster ride. For those who have seen the original films there's enough here to remain true to them but also enough alternate material to warrant a reboot.

There are nods to the originals, that aren't too in your face such as card shuffling hinting to the card predicting deadite form Evil dead, and a water seen fight that gives you flashbacks to the pit deadite from Army of darkness.

Minor spoilers and back story

So what's different to make this original? For the first time in horror (from my own knowledge) a story that makes sense. When a character shows up with scratches and cuts claiming to have been attacked by brambles and tree vines you would either get the hell out the dodge or have them committed (neither ever happens in horror). In this however as the character in question (Mia) is going cold turkey on a drug intervention after an accidental overdose (having previously tried to quit and lasting mere hours) so her brother and friends think this is her way of getting away from seclusion to return to her habits which makes sense (despite other reviews).

What's missing? The camp comedy b movie style of the original, and the so bad its good theme Bruce made famous but it doesn't suffer for this. I have to say I'm a huge fan of the originals and didn't expect to enjoy this but after watching it through and then with comentry, all the extras and then again to see what was missed that nods to the original etc I think its the best reboot in horror that I've seen. Its got enough originality (well as much as you can with a cabin in the woods story) to be a film in its own right with enough evil dead to please most fans.

Will I enjoy this?
If your looking for girls in underwear running upstairs to avoid a serial killer, gore that's over the top just for cheap scares or dodgy low budget sex scenes then no, you won't enjoy this. If your looking for a horror that takes a done to death plot, based on a classic film and somehow breaths new life into it and adds enough spark to make a reboot worth while then yes I don't think there is now or will be anytime soon anything better in this genera.

Any regrets? One and that is watching the comentery which has so many this was cut, we shot this and cut it blah blah. So many good scenes cut including the trap door deadite mia singing time to go to sleep not another peep as seen in some of the trailers, other than that best film since Batman dark knight.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needed to complete the game 100%, 15 May 2007
If you want to find all the special items and finish the game 100% you will need the help in this guide. As anyone who has played the game knows there are 20 special items per level and an extra 20 items that only certain characters can get each level. The special items do not "glitter" and so unless you know where to look are almost impossible to find. To make the game harder the items are in four groups, and the game decides on loading which group to display. As well as detailed maps and locations of these items the book also details the events you need to trigger in order to finish the game 100% again some of these are decided by the game if they will happen or not on that play through so the guide tells you how to maximise your chances of triggering the event.

It also has all the usual knowledge found in game guides including character strengths and weaknesses as well as monster guides and strategies.

Its one down side is that there are a few errors in the book, for the first mission the special items street level map is missing and instead is a duplicate of the second floor map, however on the next page there is a written guide on item locations so it still helps. Other errors I have spotted are which groups a special item falls under and some copy and pasted text in the wrong place. Despite these minor problems the book still has all the information needed to unlock all the extras in this game.
