Face the Music: A Life Exposed

5.0 out of 5 stars Still my idol, 7 Jun. 2014

They say never meet your heroes. But since reading his book,I feel like I have met him.I can honestly say that I have now more respect for PAUL STANLEY the man, than I ever thought possible. The way he over come his disability, and insecurities is inspiring. This is no brag fest,he saves the harshest crittisim for him self, and comes across all the better for it.
Given that he is the last band member to write about KISS'es inter band politics, there are no surprises. However i suspect that as he is the keeper of the bands flame, his version of events are more accurate. If you want a blow by blow account of rock'n'roll excess, then maybe ACE FREHLEY's NO REGRETS is the book to have. That said A LIFE EXPOSED is a true revealing of a once very guarded, and shy man [yes really].I recommend any KISS fan to buy this book and then listen to his last solo album LIVE TO WIN,especially the track BULLETPROOF,as the lyrics now become more personal to Paul's recent life story.Non kiss fans interested in a thought provoking read, about over coming adversity, will also find much to discover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drama queen and kings, 3 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
They say that the album format is dead, clearly no one told within temptation that,as Hydra is a fully immersive, dramatic experiance. The first track opens with wind like sounds before seguing into an Iron Maidenesque intro, adding layer upon layer of sound, before finally adding the vocals. It is to the producers credit, that Sharon den Adel can be heard without ever shouting.Layers are seamleslly peeled back to create drama/power and a sense of dynammics that always serve the song.A great start with the same production values carried through out.Other highlights include- AND WE RUN-,which features rapper Xzibit, who's portentious spoken word add yet more drama to the song, again the band and Sharon's vocalsvare layered over the top to great effect,a real crowd pleaser for sure.
PARADISE-featuring TARJA is something most fans have been waiting for and doesn't disappoint, with it's orchestral opening, powerful guitar play, and best of all excellent vocal harmonies,on yet another heavy but melodic track.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Tigertailz,as good as classic Tigertailz, 4 Dec. 2013

This review is from: Knives (Audio CD)
I saw the latest line up recently, and was pleasantly suprised by how good they were, especially when they played the new stuff, most of which are on this e.p.
It starts of with THE SHOE COLLECTOR,a track based on Pepsi Tate's short film. They do his memory proud with a gloriously daft sing along anthem. They played it as an encore, and is an instant classic[I was smiling from the first chorus, and singing along by the second].The next 3 songs are catchy enough, with good riffs ,catchy choruses, and input from the new members, while still keeping true to the TAILZ sound.
The best is saved till last with the final track. It is the heaviest, and most ambitious song on the c.d,but still has the TAILZ nack for brilliant chant along chorouses[great live too]
Don't be put off by the dark imagery,or Jay Pepper's fallout with the previous lineup,as this c.d proves that JAY is the keeper of the TIGERTAILZ flame.the c.d is probably the best release in this genre all year.

4.0 out of 5 stars stokie comes home, 23 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was gutted when I missed out on tickets for the show[I'm a stokie],but jumped at the chance at buying it on disc. This is a landmark gig for both the area and SLASH,I still can't beleive he chose to record this show.We get 21 songs in total including extensive soloing, and rarely played songs, like BEEN THERE LATELY,and BEGGARS AND HANGERS ON.The band sound great, although the stage set and camera work is equally basic, you do see the band/slash really well. When SLASH is playing you can see the scratches on his guitar as clear as any thing, must be all them bracelets eh.The fans are well up for it as you would expect, and it was good to hear from them as they waited to go in[several hours before the gig].

Bonus material includes interveiws with SLASH [extensive, informative and relaxed],Myles Kennedy, and Uncle Ian,who shows us around slashe's childhood home, with some tales of slash when he was younger thrown-in,and how they kept in touch. These interveiws are low key, personal and at times amusing,I had to laugh at the description of Stoke, and Victoria hall as a small cosy town/venue, as Stoke is an industrial city and while " vickie hall" may not be the nec it still holds 1200+ with major acts like the recent Bill Bailey show [which I did see]appearing on a regular basis.

I would recommend this to any SLash fan,as you get plenty of the hits from all his previous bands, plus some rareities, there are no guests although Myles Kennedy is superb through out,and no hype but plenty of SLASH.BUY IT and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars harder,faster ,cruder than ever, 3 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Balls Out (Audio CD)
This is like the first album, but taken to the max,it rocks harder, with guitars higher in the mix, competing with the vocals, and yes a quick glance at the track list will confirm that PANTHER are as crude as ever, with no sign of going straight[music wise].
Steel Panther seem to have found their sound,on this c.d mixing the best bits of DEF LEP,POISON,and Motley crue, although some tracks sound a bit samey.Best tracks are -Just like tiger woods[never thought I'd here golfing speak on a rock record]This is probably the funniest on offer and tuneful to boot.
-Why can't you trust me,is a melodic rocker in the def lep vain, and probably their best song, however I did find the lyrics to be overly aggressive, and sexist with lines about beating up the girlfreind, just as well it's not to be taken seriously.
-Thats what girls are for,has the best chorus,"sewing cooking being good looking" proving that they can do sexism in a funny way.
Overall I found the songs to be solid but less memmarable, mainly because there are fewer sing along choruses, and that as I mentioned earlier the guitars are louder, meaning I had to concentrate more to listen to the lyrics.Still good though buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cult classic in the making, 25 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In a world of remakes and sequals,SUCKERPUNCH is a breath of fresh air, original, thought provoking, constantly surprising, and action packed.
The movie tells the story of a traumitized girl, who is sent to a mental institute and tries to escape. She creates an alternative reality which enables her to cope. Now this does not sound promising for an action film[which it is],however it does mean that there are dream/nightmare like realities whereby any thing is possible, and the five once frail girls become strong, fast, gun toting heroines as they are pitted against all manner of fantasy,sci-fi,and army villians. Each dreamscape is realized in a highly stylized fashion, which looks fantastic and the lighting[cinematography]is worthy of a oscar nomination,so even when you don't know whats going on you can still enjoy the ride.Hang on in their and it'll make sense I promise.
The blu-ray edition adds 17 minutes of footage[mostly action],and also features an all in one commentary/ documentary/and several photo galleries option which is good, you can stop and save where your'e upto if you want to watch it in several goes. The details on the swords and guns are great and makes me want to buy the making of book.
The only thing left to say, is why the film is called SUCKERPUNCH,watch it and you will find out.

3.0 out of 5 stars good cause good c.d, 16 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Rock For Japan (Audio CD)
This double c.d is in response to the recent events in Japan, with funds going to the red cross. There are 34 tracks by 34 differant artists[17x2=34 classic rock not 44],which represents good value for money, even if quite alot of the songs are fairly average[maybe they will grow on me in time].

All the bands/singers featured are from or inspired by the eighties melodic rock scene, whom will have toured Japan a number of times, which makes this c.d relevent. If their are any doubts about the bands sincerity, then the heart felt messages in the c.d booklet should dispel them.

Of the 34 tracks available 32 of them are unreleased[3 live tracks],the HOUSE OF LORDS track I already know, but it is a good song and for me at least, provided a bit of a break from takeing in all the new stuff.

C.D1-starts well with the FM track that didn't make their last album, but is very good none the less. Also on the come back trail are FIONA, and DAN REED.The latter providing the best moment on the entire album with the song I DON'T MIND,with an effortless breathy soaring vocal and laid back melody, hope to see you back in the U.K soon please Dan.The mid part of the c.d is pleasent enough if forgetable.Things don't really liven up until POISON SUN[tack15]get some guitar going, followed up by BIG NATURE and FInally LEGS DIAMOND who both add some bite along with the melody.

C.D2-is the better c.d,featuring CROWN OF THORNS,HAREM SCAREM,and ROBIN BECK for starters.HAREM SCAREM is a mid paced tuneful song, while the other two are strong catchy rockers.HOUSE OF LORDS keep the momentum going, a lively MITCH MALLOY-ANYTHING AT ALL[live],provides the high point of C.D 2.A few songs later ROYAL HUNT[new to me]provide another good live track, one to keep an eye on I think.KANE'd are a new band with more spikey aproach which might turn into something good in the future.M.ILL.ION are also worth alook with the uptempo WHAT I WANT.Towards the end we get CHRIS LANEY, and BULLETTRAIN,both of whom work the sleazeier end of the scale to good affect.CHRIS LANEY produced ex TIGERTAILZ STEEVI JAIMZ PRIVATE HELL album making STEEVI sound really good[takes some doing],I will probably return to these two songs more than most as i'm a glamster at heart.

All in all ROCK FOR JAPAN is a good value package, which offers the chance to check out differant artists with some old but still good faves,if you came to this via classic rock aor you'll probably buy it any way.

4.0 out of 5 stars best looking walking with yet, 17 May 2011
This d.v.d has only three episodes, plus a 30min documentry, but don't let that put you off.

The annimation for the most part is a step ahead of earlier programmes in the series, with special mention going to the creation of DIMETRODON,and EUPARKERIA.Also the camera moves around a lot more, with some interresting angles, giving the feel of a moderen wildlife documentary, for example THE SPY IN THE DEN series.

Their is a dramatic narritave running through the episodes, with animals seemingly on the verge of extinction, which is open to debate. However since we are talking about extinct creatures,I personnally feel that once you've seen them you want to try to understand why they became sucsessful and ultimately why they became extinct.Their is a common theme running through the episodes that is how moderen animals evolved, and focuses on key events in evolution, and so to the first episode.

Episode one-This is the weekest visualy of the three, and starts off in the sea with the developement of eyes, exo skeletons, and the first vertibrates. The scorpions and fish are clearly c.g.i but a realistic looking gaint amphibian, and it's dramatic story arc salvage the episode.

Episode two-Starts off with giant lizard eating spiders, before going onto the star creature of the series DIMETRODON,the well kwown sailback lizard. The dimetrodon sequance features probably the best work in the entire walking with series,e.g camera work as mentioned earlier, movement is dynamic and realistic, and to be honest they just look really amazing, mean and full of menace.I would love to see Primeval use Dimetrodon as their creature of the week may be munching on human sun worshipers that would be fun[well you know what I mean].

Episode three- Features mammal like lizards, and is probably the most consistantly good episode of the three. However it is the 55 c.m four legged lizard
EUPARKIA that steals the show, with it's ability to run on it's two hind legs. The annimaters do a great job, looking almost totally life like ,you can see how dinosaurs wiil eventually come to be.

All in all a good value package, which I strongly reccomend, buy it if you are interrested in the nuts and bolts of evoluotion.
