Mel Torme - At The Crescendo
Mel Torme - At The Crescendo

5.0 out of 5 stars Professor of Skat, 4 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the Kings of Swing, Mel Torme shines where others fear to tread in entertaining that acknowledged most difficult of audiences, the live supper party. Mel Torme is my chosen professor of skat - a singing style I admire and enjoy listening to as well as attempting to prefect in my own performance singing (though sadly I can't command the degree of accompanist who delights in accompanying him - George Shearing, Gerry Mulligan, Marty Paich and his dektette, ...).

1.0 out of 5 stars NO SHOW FOR WII FIT U!, 7 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The YouTube video launched in October tells us that Wii Fit U will be available free to download for a trial from Nintendo's Store on 1st November and, if you buy one of these meters, you can upgrade the software to permanent ownership. But it is now mid-December and the software is still not available - even if you pre-order the disc and meter from Amazon you get a message saying that the release has been delayed yet another week. Considering that I and many others bought the Wii U over a year ago on the promise of a simultaneous release of Wii Fit U are naturally wondering why we didn't save the money and keep our old Wii, then maybe look at switching to Microsoft or Sony. The eStore has been a big disappointment with its constant irrelevant updates tying up the machine for hours and over-subscription meaning that there is never enough bandwidth to accommodate everyone trying to log on at once. Bad show Nintendo for trying to steal a 12-month march over the competition and spectacularly failing your loyal client base. Also, there is no sign you have learned from your mistakes or made repairs and recompense to us. Do you really want the Wii U to be seen as a broken and failed system? How about scrapping it and giving all those of us who pre-ordered in good faith a viable console and games to challenge Xbox One and Playstation 4?

A few simple ingredients, imaginatively packaged and described, constitute the ideal present for those family members, friends or acquaintances who are impossible to buy for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poking fun at Prog, 7 Dec 2013

Like Jethro Tull, Caravan didn't want us to take the progressive rock phenomenon in a dour, cerebral way like King Crimson and their ilk. Caravan's track titles tell you that their music is tongue-in-jckeek and is meant for pure enjoyment. Again, you get all the bandwidth and dynamics on a record (using Class A amplification of course) that CDs lack even on the highest spec CD-based Class B, C or D systems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canterbury Tales, 7 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After the break-up of the Wildflowers into three seminal bands - Soft Machine, King Crimson and Caravan each with a separate ethos - SM went for BBC Radiophonic Workshop style instrumentation and improvisation, KC for scored complex-time hard-hitting (pre-heavy metal?) cerebral music and Caravan produced this almost commercial disc. But this was soon to give way to their entry into what we today call fully-fledged 'prog' rock. Sadly there is only one small clip of film of them in the BBC archives but all their discs are now available on CD (with its limited performance it is, like all CD transfers, even so-called 'remixes', lacking in full frequency bandwidth and dynamics com0pared to the original viny on a high-spec reproduction system).

5.0 out of 5 stars Teenage TV at lasst!, 7 Dec 2013

This review is from: Jack Good's Oh Boy (Vinyl)
Television producer Jack Goode wanted something more exciting, immediate and new than the BBC's offering for young people and the music they liked 'The Six-Five Special' so He put up a -programme idea to the fledgling Independent Television (that staertd broadcasting in October 1955) for a show made by and for teenagers. Actually it borrowed heavily from Alan Freed's 'American Bandstand. The new show was titled 'Oh Boy!' and it featured young British talent from the stables of Larry Parnes and his contemporary managers of young performers like Joe Brown, Cliff Richard, Marty Wilde (who fronted the show) and the three Vernons Girls. On a bare proscenium arch stage with only the curtains as a backdrop, they sang the latest hits from America and Britain with a few of their own songs thrown in. The emphasis was squarely on rock'n'roll with a saxophone section led backing band assembled especially for these shows - The Lord Rockingham's Eleven (based as I say on Alan Freed's The King's Henchmen in American Bandstand). This set of jobbing musicians included the female organist Cherry Wainer who is still going strong today and has her original Hammond organ from the show. Allthough this band never performed anywhere other than the show and never toured, it achieved chart success with its two singles releases. Cliff Richard is still performing with a guitar here and his band The Drifters had not yet changed their name to the one we know now - The Shadows, because they were normally only seen as shadows against the back curtain since only Cliff was spot-lit. This disc gives you a flavour of the quick-fire presentation and lively performances; they follow the format of American shows like AB and Ed Sullivan in curtailing the numbers to shortened versions of between one and two minutes. (This was achieved by cutting a repeat verse or the 'middle eight' instrumental break. Since most of the hits of the 1950s and early 1960s were barely more than two minutes in length anyway, it was possible to maintain the momentum of the show by hustling performers on and off stage in a whirlwind performance supported by energetic blowing and percussion from Lord Rockingham's barely pausing for breath.

5.0 out of 5 stars The original curly-wurly, 4 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Along with the 'holy grail' combination of Fender Stratocaster and Vox AC30, your 1960s guitarist needed a heavy-duty signal cable with very firmly attached and robust jack plugs - one straight and one angled so you could have it either way round depending on whether your guitar socket was side- or front-style. A coiled cable was preferred to a straight one in these pre-wireless days to allow for compact storage and for its ability to extend and retract as you capered around stage so you would never fall over it, pull it out or get it tangled with something else like a mic stand. Well here is the 21st Century version - as sturdy and well-made as ever and resplendent in a variety of bright colours as well as black and white so you can make sure that you always know your cable and keep it from disappearing into the spaghetti of conventional cables in a studio or on stage.
