Rossini: Ouvertures (Transcrites pour instruments à vent)
Rossini: Ouvertures (Transcrites pour instruments à vent)
Price: £7.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart-warming performances, 28 Mar. 2015
Rossini always uplifts the heart. These are great performances on wind instruments of six overtures - among them the rarely heard overture Corradino - plus a fine hunting song for four horns. The transcriptions were expertly made by contemporaries of Rossini. The playing on period instruments by the Ricercar Academy is exquisite. It is as if one hears the music for the first time!

Great book, wise book, best introduction to environmental studies around. But be aware: this edition is not a paperback, as Amazon suggests, but an e-book! If like me, you hate reading from a screen, order one of the other editions.

Piano Concertos 2
Piano Concertos 2
Price: £33.38

5.0 out of 5 stars Grandeur and simplicity, 15 Feb. 2015
This review is from: Piano Concertos 2 (Audio CD)
These must be the best performances ever recorded (so far...). Anna Malikova has the grandeur, grip, simplicity, and effortless pianism to match Saint-Saens' grand yet subtle concertos. Honest musicianship of the highest rank, also from the orchestra under Sanderling. In the 1960s, at our home, my father and I used to sing along concerto no. 4 as played and recorded by Robert Casadesus and Leonard Bernstein. That was a great recording. This one is even greater.

Claude Frank: 85th Birthday Celebration

5.0 out of 5 stars The wisdom and ease of a great master, 12 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Mozart, Schumann, Schubert (D 960) and late Beethoven (Op. 109, 110 and 111) played with the wisdom and seeming ease of a great master. Recorded live in 2008 and 2009, this is a worthy commemoration of the art of Claude Frank. The performances remind me of the late recordings of Claudio Arrau. Frank's toucher is lighter but his mastery is on an equal level. Architectonically firm and melodically singing at the same time - what more could one wish for? I also love Frank's almost imperceptible humming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and reserved, 12 Feb. 2015
Very beautiful music, most beautifully played. Roussel's work is subtle, elegant, with considerable depth. It can stand the comparison with Debussy and Ravel. Of these three, Roussel is the most reserved. The musicians are top-notch - several from the Concertgebouw Orchestra - and the recordings (1994) are great. My personal favourite is Joueurs de flute. I used to listen to it being played by Jean-Pierre Rampal together with my father, in the 1960s. Warmly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, congenial and authentic performance, 22 Jan. 2015
Wonderful, congenial, and thoroughly authentic performance. Recording shows its age when it comes to the orchestra. Yet the voices have been captured very well: one can understand every word. Great singing in the French tradition. And what a beautiful and poetic work! Jiri Kylian choreographed a ballet for the Netherlands Dance Theater in the 1980s. If you come across the DVD (with a more recent recording of the music), buy it and watch it with your children and grandchildren. In our family, we have fond memories of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, mature, free, 9 Dec. 2013
These are wonderful performances: free-flowing, mature, virtuoso yet relaxed and devoid of even the slightest tendency to show off. One is drawn into this music instead of impressed by it. The recording is impeccable.
