The Killing Joke
The Killing Joke
by Anthony Horowitz
Edition: Hardcover

2.0 out of 5 stars Good concept, poor execution, 21 Jan. 2011
This review is from: The Killing Joke (Hardcover)
When I was given this book as a Christmas gift last year I read the synopsis and was instantly intrigued.

The idea of following the origin of a joke and then being attacked by jokes was clever, funny and original.

The downfall was, however, the surrealism used. Shoving the jokes down the readers throat to such an extent that removed the book from the world we live in and into a different, fantasy world.

Guy Fletcher was mostly likeable, although he seemed to be introduced as a bit of a flaky, camp actor but was later spoken of as more an adventurer who dared to think what others wouldn't. There were inconsistencies in who he was supposed to be. But generally he was a good character for the book.

Basically if the overall concepts weren't so condescendingly 'in your face' and the lead character was that bit more consistent then it could have been a very good book but as it is I feel that with such a strong, interesting concept to build on, all it did was disappoint.
