5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful House, 25 Oct. 2003
This review is from: In The House (Audio CD)
A three cd belter mixed by the dance genius Kenny 'dope' Gonzalez. This album contains the best in beautiful melodious house with disco/soul/deep house elements running through. It is mixed perfectly, but still maintains a raw live-mix feel which so many more mainstream comercial dance labels have lost.
Each track here is a gem and worthy of being mixed by such a big dance name.
It's nice to see a record label like Defected that sticks to promoting great music rather than just becoming another soulless corporate giant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic sounds and modern tracks, 18 Oct. 2003
A wonderful mixture of 'classical indian music'. This is a bit more than pure raga music though. As well as traditional forms, this album has new modern tracks that mix traditional idioms with fresh chill-out ideas.
The album has diversity as it covers many styles of music; vocal, sitar, percussion, flute, fusion (dance, jazz, blues) and even orchestral. This makes the album interesting to listen to and there is no worry that it will get 'samey'.
It's a beautiful, relaxing and inspiring album.

5.0 out of 5 stars modern, fresh, exciting!, 18 Oct. 2003
This review is from: Nu Brazil (Audio CD)
This compilation highlights all the best new sounds of the Brazilian genre. The tracks here are beautiful mixtures of dance music (drum n bass) with traditional Brazilian idioms. The sound is fresh and constantly interesting with a wide range of styles throughout this genre.
Unlike older Brazilian music which can sound dated, these tracks are all well produced, giving a clear feel whilst not loosing the raw traditional element.
An indispensible album to anyone into world dance and fusion sounds.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hit and miss original house, 18 Oct. 2003
I'm studying the development of dance music, so obviously there is no better way to do this than by listening to stuff, hence why I got this album, full of original house from the early days between disco and what's been dubbed 'old skool house' of the early 90s.
I know a lot of people describe this period's music as being very soulful, but when comparing it to what came before and what happened afterwards, I find it quite stark, sparse and cold. Many tracks do feel dated (with a ghostbusters theme music feel), but there are others that stand out.
I have heard other songs from this period that are better than those featured on this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars House at it's best, 18 Oct. 2003
This review is from: House Classics (Audio CD)
Just by looking at the track listing above you probably know almost every track on this, each one a massive dance classic.
Recently there has been a massive wave of dance and old skool compilations, most of which over-lapped each other with the same songs on them. This album has managed to steer clear of this; ok there are the obviously huge hits that you couldn't ignore (Finally, To be in love), but the majority of songs, although well known, have been largely ignored by compilations.
This makes this a great album to buy; you may have a lot of these songs floating about the place, but having them on one album is great. The whole feel of this album is upbeat, happy-making, melodic house.
If you like old skool and house, this is a must ;-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Journey through the underground movement, 20 Sept. 2003
This is a wonderful collection exploring this exillerating musical genre. The album has gems from both well-known and lesser known artists all showing their inspired music at its best.
ALthough there is little diversity shown on this album the compilation flows well and this does make up for the slightly 'samey' feel.
The booklet also charts a brief look at the formation of the style.
A great album, but there are others that shine brighter.

5.0 out of 5 stars another rocking delight, 16 Sept. 2003
This review is from: Bad Bad One (Audio CD)
This third album of Merredith Brooks goes back to the more up-tempo rock/pop sounds of her first album, following the musical diversity on her second.
Again there are plenty of catchy hooks, good guitar work cleaver lyrics and wonderfully accesible chick-rock songs.
This is better than Blurring The Edges, so if you liked that, you will enjoy this too.

5.0 out of 5 stars vibrant mix, 16 Sept. 2003
This album shows great variety ranging from the subline sitar music from the 60's album Call Of The Valley to contemporary upbeat fusion sounds.
All the songs stand out individualy with their beautiful musical motifs, skilled singing and musicianship.
The album is so diverse that it could be played for relaxing to as well as it being an uplifting cd.
This is a bargain which is an indespensible part to any world-music collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars relaxing modern jazz feel, 16 Sept. 2003
This review is from: Yellow Daffodils (Audio CD)
Wow this album has such a great chilled-out feel good vibe to it. It compliments jazz smoothness with an up to date urban feel. It has a great jazz club feel to it (I think she used to sing in clubs in London). It is a really beautiful album.
Think of a felame Omar and you're getting somewhere close.
The remixes are also r&b orientated, so this album is perfect for relaxing to.

3.0 out of 5 stars nothing like the usual asian underground..., 16 Sept. 2003
This review is from: Indian Room (Audio CD)
The track listing here is wrong. It's a two cd, 22 track album.
The album as a whole is quite uninteresting ambiant music that not only doesn't get going, it also is rather bland, which is rather unexpected when you think about what gems could have been put on a compilation like this.
Think lots of wooshy white noise and mysterious la-ing...it's not cracked up to much. Sure there is a hint of Indian mysticism, but this is lost in the over-the-top chill-outness that really kills this album.
There are one or two interesting vocal ideas, but these get tedious throughout the songs.
Nice idea, shame it didn't work...
