5.0 out of 5 stars Genius!, 30 July 2009
This review is from: In My Time (Audio CD)
Jason McNiff is an absolute genius. Bob Dylan with a lot more musical invention and without the whiney voice and the self-adoration. The analogy is unfair also because all of McNiff's songs are vastly varied in style and inspiration. His love of Italy is a recurring feature, as is his passion for travel and movement. The lyrics are charming and inventive and the gentle, ballad-style vocal inflection leaves you keen for more (well I've just bought 'Nobody's Son' so let's see!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Use Pro Arte Music!, 30 July 2009
Pro Arte Music is great - currently a limited collection, but rapidly expanding and perfectly produced urtext (and most importantly, cheap!) The best part is, you can order individual parts from quartet sets if you have had a heinous git of a viola player run off with all your music like I have.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Mendelssohn Express, 30 July 2009
My one criticism of this performance of the octet is its speed. Unfortunately, that's a fairly major problem, considering that the extremely fast pace that the Primavera ensemble sets itself throughout actually rules out most of the finer detail or sensitivity one would expect from this beautiful piece. For instance, the lovely second subject in the third and fourth violins in thirds is almost completely obscured by the driving quavers around it and by its own haste. The Midsummer-Night's-Dream-like fairy quality of the first violin line and the delicacy of the accompaniment blurs into a breathless race to the finish line. This is a real shame, as the group's tone is lovely and it strikes me that with a little more thought they could have really done this piece justice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Martinu at his best, 30 July 2009
This review is from: Martinu: Chamber Music (Audio CD)
I bought this CD purely for the nonet - a barely known but absolutely beautiful work and a perfect example of Martinu at his lightest and most humorous. The performance captured the translucent quality of Martinu's writing and his driving, compelling rhythms brilliantly. I went away humming the music. Great performance: sorry I can't yet comment on the rest of the CD!
