2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 22 Mar 2006
I was disappointed by this book. I think it's not brilliantly written and the ending was a pathetic abandonment of love without a fight. If you want to read a brilliant landmark book about two women in love, read Patricia Highsmith's 'Carol'.

5.0 out of 5 stars In one word- a masterpiece!, 22 Mar 2006
This film will be remembered not only as one of the most all-round brilliant tragic love stories in the history of cinema (alongside films like The Bridges of Madison County and The Remains of the Day) but also as a great step in the right direction for the recognition of valid and virtuous love between people of the same sex. Homosexuals are normally just considered as people who have sexual pulsions for other people of their own sex whom conservatives deem immoral and liberals'accept' because they believe anyone should be able to do anything they desire. But, believe it or not, homosexual love is passionate and strong, just as your general true love is for heterosexuals. I hope that this film will open some people's eyes (if they're not too closed to learning anything new) and reveal to them the fact that love between two people of the same sex, despite what we have been forced to believe since the middle ages (yes, go learn your history- before that nobody cared and in fact the greeks saw homosexual love as more virtuous than heterosexual love), is pure and good (ask all your scientists and shrinks) and should be respected as such. What a disgrace to see the way society has for so many years persecuted homosexuals. The persecutors are fighting a losing battle and they know it, which is why they are becoming angrier and angrier and more and more full of hatred. We must all love and learn something from Ennis and Jack.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new obsession!, 12 Feb 2006
This review is from: Guarda-Me a Vida Na Mao (Audio CD)
I was inspired to buy this album when I heard it playing in my local specialist classical/jazz/world music shop. I was browsing through the Bach records and I was just blown away at the beauty and intensity of this music. I discovered Fado through this singer and what a way to discover a new type of music! Ana Moura has a rare moving intensity in her voice- listening to her album, you want to cry and dance for joy all at the same time! I highly recommend this album to anyone who appreciates truly beautiful music.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is a glorified soap opera, but it's very well done, 5 Nov 2005
You have to admit that this series is above the average. It is well acted and has intriguing, fascinating plots and subplots. It doesn't rate the same as Six Feet Under for me though, because the storylines are a bit ridiculously over-the-top (too many extreme things happen like in a soap opera) and the characters are unbelievable and often seem to have no morality. I think in Six Feet Under you can identify with the characters more. They are rounded and realistic and, despite their (sometimes major) faults and problems, the main characters have a strong moral core and so you can't help but love and understand them. In Desperate Housewives it's difficult to like the women because they seem either detached and amoral or have exagerrated personality traits (like Susan's farcical and annoying tendancy to muck everything up). Anyway, it is meant to be partly comedy so you have to allow it some leaway for exaggeration I suppose. All in all, it is fun and interesting to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection, 11 Oct 2004
There's not much you can say about Six Feet Under. It just takes your breath away. I've personally never watched anything as near to perfect as this, neither on television nor at the cinema. Sublime.

5.0 out of 5 stars An original, subtle film, 11 Oct 2004
Lost in Translation is well written, well acted and well directed. I wish people wouldn't put 'boring and rubbish', it's so immature. It just isn't maybe their type of film, but it's really stupid to say this is a 'crap, boring' film. Far from it. It's original, subtle and almost perfect. It's not a 'Hollywoodian' film, so people that want that same old format should go elsewhere. This is a film for people who take their cinema seriously and like thoughtful film-making.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the very best albums I've ever heard, 10 Oct 2004
This review is from: Revelling-Reckoning (Audio CD)
What a shame that certain people bring down the ratings of this sublime album. It's a work of such great beauty and perfection and it's sad that certain Difranco fans are too closed-minded to appreciate it's originality and let her move on from what she was doing before (this is called progression and improvement). It is almost impossible to compare her previous music with this album. Her previous albums were very good, well above the average, but this is just on a completely different level. A remarkable masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning voice, stunning album, 29 Dec 2001
This review is from: What I Deserve (Audio CD)
This is one of my very favourite albums I think. The tunes are so beautiful and Kelly's voice is stunning. It's country but without the much-hated 'cheesiness' that British people never like. Kelly Willis is a very able successor to the great Emmylou Harris (who is still going actually- fortunately- and so maybe we shouldn't yet find her a successor!) She really carries off the Nick Drake cover aswell. Bravo.
