5.0 out of 5 stars Polly Jean....ius, 7 Sept. 2011

Stunningly original and an evocative work of pure genius.

In an age of so much mainstream repetitive mediocrity the creativity of P.J.Harvey is a shining beacon, and "Let England Shake" is a glowing testament to her beguiling talent.

The Mercury Prize award is thoroughly deserved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sumptuously Special......, 18 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Surfacing (Audio CD)
This is a terrific album packed with absolute gems, beguilingly delivered by the exquisite Sarah McLachlan, unquestionably one of the world's top talents in her genre.

Don't hesitate to acquire this stunning offering and, if you appreciate beautiful female vocals of the highest order, with wonderfully original lyrics, then I would also recommend that you check out the innovatively bewitching Jewel, and the ethereally sublime Loreena McKennitt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, Deadly, & Devestatingly Good...., 17 Jun. 2011
This review is from: The Shadow Line [DVD] (DVD)
Hugo Blick's depiction of gangland intrigue and drugrunning, set against greed and corruption, must surely rate as one of the finest creations of its genre ever to impact upon our screens.

The plot disperses more twists and turns than a rattlesnake on heat, and the unrelenting, underlying menace unstiltingly pervades throughout.

Memorable scenes abound, and terrific character performances proliferate.

Chiwetal Ejiofor is well cast as Jonah Gabriel, the investigating detective suffering amnesia as a result of a bullet lodged in his skull ( a legacy of an earlier drugs heist swoop ), who is unable to recollect how he acquired a briefcase containing £250,000.

Christopher Eccleston is believable as the gangland leader planning one last major heist before retiring to finance treatment and care of his beloved wife ( Lesley Sharp ),who is suffering from the ravages of Alzeimer's.

Rafe Spall is eerily electrifying as the creepily psychotic Jay Wratten, but Stephen Rea delivers an outstanding, iconic performance as the ice-cold, macabre, and incarnately evil Gatehouse.

Some scenes are not for the squeamish, but, otherwise, "The Shadow Line" is a gripping, pulsating, original thriller which I would highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Immaculate........, 15 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Doctor Zhivago [1965] [DVD] (DVD)
David Lean's luscious adaptation of Boris Pasternak's classic novel of love and heartbreak woven around the upheaval of the Russian Revolution is a rich tapestry of a film.

The scenic cinematography is breathtaking, the acting of Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Geraldine Chapman, Tom Courtney, and Rod Steiger superb, and the film is further enriched by possibly the most hauntingly beautiful film score ( by Maurice Jarre ) ever to grace the cinema.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Triumph for Polanski & Kinski...., 14 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Tess [DVD] (DVD)
Worthily nominated for six Academy Awards, this is a magnificently sumptuous, yet earthy adaptation of Hardy's best known classic.

In a career-defining role, Nastassja Kinski delivers possibly her best ever performance as the iconic heroine. Over the years many actresses have put their own stamp on the role of Tess, but, to me, Kinski's interpretation, combined with her mesmerically lustrous performance, leaves the others somewhat in the shade..... just beautiful !

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Western Ever ?, 14 Jun. 2011
Is this the finest western ever? It is, of course, entirely subjective, but, to my mind, the only western of parity is another of Sergio Leone's masterpieces, "Once Upon a Time in the West".

"The Good, the Bad & the Ugly" has Eastwood at his superlative best as the laconic "man with no name", brilliantly supported by both Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach. Add to this the excellent cinematography, and the unforgettable classic soundtrack of the incomparable genius that is Ennio Morricone, and you truly have one of the most epic and iconic films of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cinematography & Musical Score......., 13 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Paris, Texas [DVD] (DVD)
"Paris, Texas" is an intoxicatingly beautiful film, showcasing awesome cinematography and, in Ry Cooder's hauntingly evocative creation , one of the finest ever musical scores.

Add to this the impressive characterisation, and a particularly outstanding performance from Harry Dean Stanton, and the end result is superlative cinema.

Once Upon a Time in the West -- Special Collector's Edition (2 discs) [DVD] [1969]
Dvd ~ Henry Fonda
Price: £5.12

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best, 13 Jun. 2011
To me this Sergio Leone masterpiece is, possibly alongside "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly", the best western ever made, and, in Ennio Morricone's brilliant musical score, also boasts the finest soundtrack.

Add to this the superb cast and the awe-inspiring locations and camerawork, and you truly have an epic of unprecedented monumental proportions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jewel Sparkles......., 13 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Pieces of You (Audio CD)
Jewel's fine debut album and the forerunner of many great things to come.

Uniquely laced with highly imaginative personal lyrics, and delivered with Jewel's endearing sensual vocals you have to love this compilation.

From this, Jewel moves on to the delightfully ephemeral "Spirit", and the more upbeat offerings like the wonderful "Goodbye Alice in Wonderland".

Enjoy them all!
