Old Man's War
Old Man's War
by John Scalzi
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.29

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!, 27 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Old Man's War (Paperback)
This is one of the best sci-fi story's I have read in years (and I've read a few!).
The setting and idea is truly original, this whole idea of allowing the old folk on Earth the chance to 'live again', all in the name of advancing the cause of humanity's survival in space, is brilliant!
Scalzi's writing style is similar to Harry Harrison's and therefore moves swiftly along!
It's a good read, and definately one of Scalzi's best.

Sherlock Holmes - The Definitive Collection (Digitally Remastered) [DVD]
Sherlock Holmes - The Definitive Collection (Digitally Remastered) [DVD]
Dvd ~ Basil Rathbone
Price: £17.70

5.0 out of 5 stars Basil at his best!, 27 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have always been a fan of Conan Doyle's Sherlock, and Basil Rathbone's interpretation of him is possibly one of the best (next to Jeremy Brett).
Love the scripts, the acting, and the sets.
My only complaint is that only the first 'episode' is set in the truly Sherlock period, the others are all set during WW2.
But still a good bit of Sherlock escapism!

Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.27

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best (Not) Star Trek book ever!, 27 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Redshirts (Paperback)
Bought this, read it in just a couple of days.
I love Scalzi's writing style, it's very reminiscent of Harry Harrison.
The 'world' of Redshirts is deep and the story catches you from the start.
A truly cracking good story!

Eclipse Phase
Eclipse Phase
by Catalyst Games
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £36.96

5.0 out of 5 stars (Possibly) THE Best Sci-Fi RPG, 27 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Eclipse Phase (Hardcover)
The setting is wide and involved.
The rules may be a bit 'clunky' but it's not too clunky and the combat system can be swift and deadly.
The (for want of a better description) Sanity system is possibly the best secret of this game - why kill a character when they can just 'reboot', but the damage to their character's psyche can be long-lasting and sometimes permanent!
I love this game, it is my all-time favourite for sci-fi. The fact that it's also 'open licence' means that the fans have begun to take it and run with it, and what some of them are doing with it is just incredible!
Buy it, buy it now!!!
:)

The Graveyard Book
The Graveyard Book
by Neil Gaiman
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Gaiman does it again, 27 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Graveyard Book (Hardcover)
This is Gaiman on top form once again.
He creepy tale of one boy's survival whilst being raised by ghosts is just wonderful!
Like Coraline he brings a dark twist to a children's book that makes it just disturbing enough.

Sinbad The Sailor [DVD]
Sinbad The Sailor [DVD]
Dvd ~ Douglas Fairbanks Jr
Offered by jim-exselecky
Price: £8.79

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Costumed Romp, 27 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sinbad The Sailor [DVD] (DVD)
My all-time favourite Sinbad movie.
Fairbanks overacts whilst O'Hara smoulders and Quinn fumes.
I love this film, the language, the costumes, the sets, there is nothing to not like about it!

Who Goes There?: The Novella That Formed The Basis Of "The Thing"
Who Goes There?: The Novella That Formed The Basis Of "The Thing"
by John W Campbell
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Creepy as hell!, 27 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you like your horror to be a bit more cerebral than visceral, then this is for you.
I can see why this inspired a movie (especially the original black and white one - "It Came From Outer Space")!
Read it with the light on!

Whitechapel Gods
Whitechapel Gods
by S M Peters
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: £4.31

4.0 out of 5 stars Original., 27 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a truly original story, it may be a bit slow here and there but the imagery is vivid and the setting is grim and nihilistic.
The story is nothing new but the journey is brilliant, very much worth a read.
