Theatres of War: A Novel Set in Wartime Italy
Theatres of War: A Novel Set in Wartime Italy
by R. J. J. Hall
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Love and passion win through in wartime Naples, 7 Nov. 2013
What an enjoyable, interesting read, packed with feeling. This is a novel that succeeds on more than one level, and as you are drawn more deeply into the pages, the layers are revealed. After a slightly slow start, the plot maintains a brisk pace, keeping the reader hooked on the strong central characters and wanting to find out more about them and their destinies. Several subtle twists and unforeseen dramas mean that the outcomes are not always what you expect.
The harsh reality of the impact of the war in Italy, in particular on Naples, and on those civilians and soldiers who struggled to live there, or close by, during the Second World War, has been meticulously researched and is the bedrock upon which this novel has been built. The writing is vivid and shocking in its detail and descriptions, and I kept hearing the word `rape' in my head as I pictured the mindless destruction of buildings, streets and services, and the total disregard, in wartime, for all human life or for a way of life. Just as devastating to witness is the appalling situation that so many people found themselves in, having been badly injured or mentally scarred for life. The author shows us the brutality of war from many different viewpoints, including the blinkered, but telling, view of a mother, living in England, who just cannot accept that her son's war in `sunny' Italy is actually a bloody war fought in exposed, waterlogged trenches and in freezing weather. Lack of communication and information caused terrible problems, not least among the officers issuing commands that resulted in grotesque loss of life or injury. This, too, is highlighted so well in this novel.
Theatres of War is not just about the dreadful impact of the war in Italy, of course. Weaving its way through the pages is a strong and sensitive love story, based on the careful observation of the lives of two very different young army officers, Edmund and Frank, and of Vermillion, Edmund's fiancé. All three find themselves posted, with others, to the bombed city of Naples, and having to cope with the wartime horrors and deprivation they encounter. Central to the novel, too, is a second `theatre of war' - the discovery of a theatre among the rubble of Naples, and how it is put back to use through sheer determination and dedication. The beauty of the place, albeit battered, and the uplifting content of the music and the operas, transcends the ugliness of the war and revives all those who step through the doors. This element of the storyline brings a very positive note, drawing everyone, from all walks of life, together. The author's knowledge and love of opera and theatre, and his ability to bring the rehearsals and scenes alive, create vibrant splashes of colour against the greyness and sadness of the city.
This really doesn't feel like a debut novel. It is written with passion and is assured and sensitive, with memorable descriptions and characters. It leaves the reader with much to reflect upon, and it is very good to know that the author is writing a sequel, for the characters have more to tell!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality blue terry slippers, 25 Oct. 2013

I bought the dark blue slippers, which were very well received by my husband. Most slippers of this kind are in white and soon look grubby, despite washing. These blue ones are wearing well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Birthday present that was a huge success, 25 Oct. 2013

Originally I chose a larger bag, but it was too big for the person I was giving it to. I exchanged this bag for the shoulder bag and my friend loves it. The picture is so cute and the tapestry is of good quality. The bag is a good size to have tucked under your arm if you put the strap over your shoulder. An added plus point was the free purse.

I bought this with the salt mill and both are excellent. You can vary the coarseness of the grind, and the grinding motion is easy. The mill doesn't become clogged. It's the best pepper mill I've ever bought.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, foolproof cooking aid, 19 April 2013

I bought this because I was determined to cook fillet of beef to perfection and it semed as though this Thermapen might be the thing that I needed. I was so right! I use it all the time now, to ensure that meat is not over or under-cooked, and that roast chicken is perfect. You can use it in other ways, too. You get a reliable reading in a second and the anxiety about whether your food is ready or not is lifted from your shoulders. Wonderful!
