4.0 out of 5 stars Classy looking, slim, with big numbers, 12 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a classy looking glass scales, with a simple LCD display. The numbers are nice and big if you're shortsighted like me and can't read that far away.
You can swap the readout from lbs, to kgs, to stones with a simple push button on the bottom. It would be nice if you could do that without picking it up (I prefer kgs, my wife likes stones) but it's not a deal breaker.

It's very slim, and so you can easily slide it out of the way under a cabinet.

It's a glass top, so obviously don't be stupid and jump on to it. It does get a bit slippery if you stand on it in wet feet.

It turns itself on when you stand on it, it's simple to use, and it looks very smart in a modern or an old-fashioned bathroom.
Nice bit of kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, ideal if you want to lose weight but lose track of things., 12 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is both a simple device and a very powerful one, and you can use it at several levels. At the simplest end of the scale you can use it just a pedometer, while at the top end you can use it to track every bit of nutrition and exercise you do and genuinely keep track of your activity and calorie intake.

So what is it? Well, it's a bangle you wear on your wrist. It bluetooth connects to your phone which effectively acts as the screen for the device. You don't need to have your phone on you all the time, as it will upload data to it as you come into range. It won't work with a PC or laptop though, even if you have bluetooth on it which is quite a big shame.

You put it on, and wear it. That's it. It will track your steps, and a night you can put it into 'sleep' mode and it will track how long you sleep and how well. I think some of the sleep data needs to be taken with a bit of interpretation as it tells me I fall asleep in 4minutes, which seems a bit quick. Still, it's quite interesting. That's the use at the basic level of things.

At a more involved level, you can use the camera on your phone to track everything you eat by scanning the barcode on the packaging The phone will go online to track how many calories that is and so you can truly keep track of what you're consuming. If there's no barcode, you can manually lookup the food and it's quite sensibly got some of the more common foods that this sort of thing usually leaves off - so for example, you can keep track of that chicken tikka takeaway. Some of the database is a bit US-centric though, and it's easy to let your phone think that you just ate a bag of crisps rather than chips. Once you're inputted what you've eaten you can't cheat and delete it, which is good for honesty, but annoying if you make a mistake.

You can even track your moods, with everything from 'totally done' to 'amazing', which is handy as a refernce for why you didn't leave the sofa that particular day. Everything you do is tracked in graphs which can be customised to the data you want to see. The data is all backed up to the internet, so you won't lose it if you lose your phone. You can't see the data online, but you can download it all as raw data if you want to get really technical and track it all on a spreadsheet.

The band itself is worn as a bracelet. There are different sizes to fit your wrist, and the packaging comes with a cut-out so you can check the size before you open it up. Easy to send back if you get the wrong size. Mine is actually a bit big for me, but still seems to work absolutey fine. In fact, being a bit loose means I can push it up my arm if it gets in the way of typing.
You can track other types of exercise other than walking, either by starting the stopwatch on the band, or manually on the phone app. I found the stopwatch confusing to start on the band, it not being clear if it's on or off and found I was leaving it on, or not turning it on properly. The app converts different exercises to equivalent steps and adds them to your exercise. This is a bit conservative - an hour on a static bike doing intervals burned 650calories according to my heart monitor, but this was the same as only 500steps of walking accoording the the jawbone, which seems way off.
The bangle is made from a silicon type of material and feels pretty robust. It can stand getting splashed, but not swimming. It's comfortable on the wrist, but you never quite forget it's there.

All in all, if you're struggling to lose weight and really want to keep track of your activity and nutition this is perfect. You can't forget it, as it's on your wrist, and there are no fiddly screens or displays on it because it's all on your phone. It's also quite motivating in itself, and you'll find yourself walking when normally you'd drive because you want to push your score up.

Great fun, highly motivating, and very recomended.

SanDisk Sansa Clip Sport 8GB MP3 Player - Black
SanDisk Sansa Clip Sport 8GB MP3 Player - Black
Price: 35.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the older models, but still a bargain., 12 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I've a SanDisk Sansa Clip+ 8GB MP3 Player with Radio and Expandable MicroSD/SDHC Slot - Black which is excellent, simple to use, light and strong and I love it, so it's hugely disappointing to get this new version and find that it's just not as good. The screen is poor quality, there's no 'lock' button so it's annoying to use on the move and it just doesn't have the same quality feel as the old one. It also insists on putting your music on in alphabetical order. The colour screen is not good enough to show cover art and the screen isn't high quality enough to really make it comfortable to read. The old one has a simple, bright two-colour display that is far better.

I find myself using my old Sansa rather than this one. It might not have a colour screen but apart from that, it's better in every way. Go for the older model.

All that aside - it's still a bargain for what you get. Sound quality is great, easy to use, no DRM rubbish or itunes nonsense (just drag and drop files like a memory stick) and cheap enough that you won't be too upset if you leave it on the train. Depsite me sounding down on it, it would still be second choice if I was buying again - my first being the older model.

3.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what you would expect., 12 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
There are no surprises here, you get pretty much precisely what you'd expect. Some nice, clear sounding, fairly cheap speakers. Plug 'em in and listen.
They look a bit plasticky, but sound fine. They have two inputs, a 3.5mm socket and an AUX socket which is quite useful, and tone controls and a volume.

To be honest, I'm struggling to say any more about them. These are dead simple speakers that just work, and sound good so if that's all you need, they're perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid without weight, professional feel., 5 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These are excellent clippers with a nice light weight that makes them very easy to manoeuvre around your head. There are more settings and length adjustments than you can imagine and they do an excellent job on hair and beards. Let the clipper do the work, (there's really no need to press down on your head) and they will deliver a consistent length trim. Turbo mode will boost the power if you've got thick hair, which is useful and fun.

It comes in a sturdy plastic case which is great - other similar clippers and shavers just come with loose bits and pieces which of course you immediately lose. This keeps everything together and is useful for travelling. Charge seems to last for ages (I've only charged it once since I got it) and it seems to be very quick to charge up too.

Excellent clippers, they feel quite professional in the hand, and look sleek and stylish too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, powerful and fun, 18 Mar 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a really good little gadget, and perfect if you're a smoothie fan. It has a small base that takes up little room in a cupboard, and a couple of drinks bottles. Fill up the bottle with your ingredients, and swap the lid of one of the bottles for a blender attachment. Turn it upside down and push it on to the base and, wahey, instant smoothie. Swap the lid back to the ordinary one and you'r done.

Very little mess and easy to clean, compact and powerful, this isn't one of those gadgets that will get buried in the back of a cupboard somewhere because it is so easy to use. It also makes fanstastic pancake batter...!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for trying out, but feels lightweight and cheap., 18 Mar 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
'Proper' cutthroat razors can be ridiculously expensive, prohibitively so if you just want to see if you get on with one. They also need looking after and sharpening and other faffing about.

A middle road is the shavette, which instead of a solid blade uses a holder for an old fashioned razor blade.

This shavette looks the part in a suitably scary way, but feels very light in the hand. It doesn't feel chunky and 'manly' like you might expect. It comes in a carboard carton with no instructions at all which is surprising - it doesn't even tell you how to get the blade in, which, being insanely sharp, isn't something that's much fun to find out with trial and error. I managed to put a nice slice in my thumb doing it.

The standard double-edge razor blades supplied are snapped in half to use (top tip, snap them while they're still in the wrapper) and a fiddly clip device holds it in place. It's hard to know if you've positioned it properly or if it's sticking out too far, or pushed too far in.

Lack of instructions is particularly noticable when you come to use it for the first time, as you've no idea what you're doing. Do some research, or you will definitely cut yourself! (there are lots of friendly videos on youtube).

This is a very cheap razor, so it's worth a punt if you'd like to try out this kind of razor but if you know what you're doing I'd plump for something a bit more substantial.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cat loves it, 9 Jan 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Giving my cat a straight choice in two bowls between this one and IAMS Adult Senior and Mature 7+ Chicken Dry Dog Food 3 kg (Pack of 3), my slightly fussy cat went for this one each time, and he'd gone for IAMS with gusto before that.

Once he's finished it, he immediately asks for more. If you have a fussy eating cat I don't think you could do better than this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Bambi than bullfrog., 31 Dec 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
If you are someone who, without the miraculous power of mascara, looks more bullfrog than bambi you will want to invest in a brand that gives thick, long and fluttery lashes. One brand known to be blinking brilliant, of course, is the UK's best-selling mascara Benefit's They're Real which maximises even the shortest of lashes. However, unfortunately, I am allergic to some components in that brand - and watery, swollen peepers is not an attractive look.

Therefore, I have been on the look out for something that is equally effective for creating a dramatic look. Max Factor Excess Volume really does thicken the lashes beautifully and, I can testify, makes mine look longer, fuller and healthier.

It's a two barrel experience to apply. One side thickens the lashes while the second side gives a black gloss finish and seals in the lashes for the day with a black lacquer. It's long-lasting mascara that withstands everything and is every bit as good as Benefit's They're Real.

The downside is that the lacquer dries quite hard and cakes on the lashes so it takes a lot of oil-based makeup remover and patience to get it off. I can imagine some women would not like this drying effect and would prefer a mascara with a softer more supple finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the job, 30 Dec 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a nice solid unit that lets you use mains power from a car battery. Dead easy to use, just connect it to your battery and off you go. It's quite small and compact and if you wanted to use it as permanent fixture in your car or van it should be fairly easy to install that way. It looks quite robust and can handle some rough treatment, although not quite to 'chuck it in the boot and forget about it' level.

Great for running laptops, power tools and other bits and pieces that won't run off a cigarette lighter connection. Recomended.
