The Benson family has always fascinated me. The stern Archbishop, his gifted eccentric children -among them AC Benson(novelist) and RH Benson( Catholic Monsignor and novelist) presided over by their loving mother who was as unconventional as they were, but in her own distinctive way. Mary Benson or 'Ben' as she was known to her friends, found fulfilment most of all in a long series of intense same-sex friendships. Lucy Tait, daughter of a previous Archbishop was the longest lasting and best known. She came to live with the Bensons, and after the death of Mary's husband she shared the marital bed also. In my opinion it would be simplistic to describe Mary Benson as a closet lesbian who sought out female partners so that she could endure the constraints of her marriage. Intense friendships between women were much more the norm then than we may imagine. Mary's husband was aware that she needed women in her life, and she did not hide this from him . Rodney Bolt's use of her diaries makes clear that she had an immense struggle to hold herself back from expressing her 'desires' fully, with some women at least. It is interesting to see how she integrated her faith that 'God is Love' into her own affirmation 'Love is God'.

This book is written in a lively style, with good use of other materials interposed in the text, such as extracts from AC Benson's description of childhood and family relationships written as fiction, but clearly based on his own experiences when young. This is a book backed up by scholarship, dealing sensitively with a complex woman, who lived her life as fully as she could. She was a true Victorian, resembling the Queen herself in outward appearance, but her outlook on life was far from conventional.

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult, 2 May 2015

This review is from: Ida [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this DVD for a friend. It arrived safely and in excellent condition.
The sub titles are not easy to turn on, but as many others have noted there is little dialogue anyway. It is best described as bleak but beautiful, giving much to think about once seen. For a real understanding of what the director was trying to do, Google his acceptance speech of the Oscar received for the film.
Be warned that the accompanying booklet to this DVD has no English translation.

I am very pleased with this, excellent packaging and great value, but in my opinion it takes a while for the lavender smell to come through. Maybe this is different for others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I found this, 3 Feb. 2014

This is a thriller, but there are no Scandi detectives or forensic examiners at work here. The main character is a Finnish lawyer and single parent called Thora, and as is so often the case, her professional and domestic lives interweave frequently. A much darker thread runs through the book which refers to episodes in Finnish history which some readers may find boring, but as always the past has much bearing on murky practices in the present. A group of young students, desperate to be 'different', an embittered academic, and a wealthy young man who seeks happiness in all the wrong places are some of the key characters here.
I really enjoyed this book and have already read another by this same author, with the intention of reading them all when I can.
If you like a touch of history, a thriller that demands intelligent, careful reading, all set in Finland then you will enjoy this too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Layers of deception, 6 Oct. 2013

This review is from: The Accident (Kindle Edition)
If you like a thoughtful thriller that you will remember for far longer than some others, then you should enjoy this . It is a long book with lots of detail, excellent characterisation, and lots to say about what ordinary people can do when desperate circumstances prevail. Linwood Barclay's thrillers often feel like jigsaw puzzles, where the pieces fit in tightly. In this book the "pieces" are often very small, but the picture is still a large one. A series of events involving deception of all sorts link together and then escalate.

. Much of the book is about the relationship between bereaved husband Glen and his little girl Kelly. Glen's wife has died in a suspicious car accident, and this is not the only "accident" that will happen.I like reading about small town America, and this is a small town experiencing the effects of recession. Some people "get by" by cutting corners in their work, using sub standard or illegal fitting for electrics, selling goods that have fallen off the back of the proverbial truck. These form part of much darker events
that happen over a small space of time.
Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex and satisfying, 24 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed this very much; it is a new take on the usual police procedural novel with a Detective Inspector who comes over as a man with a real personality, rather than being a 'maverick cop'. The murders are gruesome, but that can't be helped -these deaths are certainly not from natural causes! There is a supernatural element, but you need to look very carefully to find it, and it is all the more chilling for being used very sparingly. Each of the main characters is written about in a fully rounded way, and the plot is full of satisfying detail. Only at the very end did I feel that various plot elements were drawn together too quickly, but that's just my opinion. I have already downloaded the second book in this series, and look forward to reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meticulous record keeping, 10 May 2013

This is a book of interest to you if you like detail, and want to find out how the changes of the Reformation worked out at local level. The 'voices' of the title speak through the written parish records, which mention not only vestments, prayer books and mending the church roof, but introduce the reader to the many people involved in running the parish. The priest of this parish survives for forty two years, being very careful in his comments about how the great changes of spiritual allegiance affect him personally. Eamon Duffy writes well, with wit and clarity. I enjoyed this book very much, and was delighted to find it on Amazon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Born in the USA!, 5 Mar. 2013

This review is from: My Kindle Fire HD (Paperback)
This title says it all. I had hoped this was a guide to the use of Kindle Fire HD written for UK users, but no such luck.
A number of references are to USA versions of Kindle Fire products, most of which induce envy, because we don't have them! For example, USA Amazon Prime gives a lot more to its users than anything we receive in our version/

Having said that, here are some good points. It is clearly set out, not afraid to write about Kindle Fire shortcomings, and the language is reasonably non technical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgiveness is not 'instant'..., 2 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A friend told me about this book, and now having read it once, I am going to start again because it is so full of insights. The author is an Anglican priest, but the material on which he bases his thoughts ranges beyond the Christian tradition. He uses contemprary sources, including some 'unforgiveable' cases of hatred and murder. His points include the length of time that forgiveness may take -maybe a life-time, and that simply saying 'I forgive' does not take away the consequences and hurts caused by the source of the pain. There is an excellent index, and although he writes for the general reader, he provides for taking this topic on to further study. His style of writing is fluent, and the frequent examples and case-studies make it a book that helps the reader to follow his train of thought. The "healing"in the title is what may come when the "agony" of thr pain is lived through, and forgiveness becomes a possibility. An excellent book.
