As other reviewers point out, the cello stand comes without instructions. Managed to assemble from the picture on here. Other than that, it does what it's supposed to. Seems sturdy enough. Nowhere to put the bow, though.

Skim
Skim
by Jillian Tamaki
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars "Skim" by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki, 11 July 2012
This review is from: Skim (Paperback)
This was a great read. Kimberly, or Skim if you like, is a chubby teen girl of japanese descent in a girls' academy in Canada. When she's not making snide remarks about her stupid, blonde classmates to her friend Lisa, the two girls are practicing Wicca. And when one of their classmate's boyfriend kills himself, they get caught up in a wave of sorrow in school - some genuine and some fake. To top it off Lisa and Skim are starting to drift apart, and Skim finds herself having feelings for a woman.

It's a story about identity, cliques, friendship, suicide, sorrow, love, crushes and seeking alternative cultures. If you liked "Ghost World" (Ghost World and/or Ghost World [DVD]), I'm pretty sure you're gonna like this one. I find that the author Mariko Tamaki really nails the general feeling of being a teenager, and Jillian Tamaki's black and white drawings go well with the atmosphere. I recognise a lot of what Skim is saying and how she interprets the world around her, and if I had read this 10 years ago, at 14-15, I'm pretty sure it'd be an instant fave.

This could have been good. But it really wasn't...

Lauren Hammond had a decent idea: an asteroid crashes into earth and life as we know it ends. But that's the only decent thing about this story. I'm rather impressed by Georgina's father, who managed to dig out and build a new underground home in only 6 hours. I'm also impressed by the fact that in the past 2 years it seems that the surface-people have in fact evolved a fair bit, from the descriptions of them. Now they're completely animalistic, with different teeth and no language.

I can't at all understand the love story in this book. Colin is an ass. Not a nice-guy-who-turns-out-to-be-a-jerk, either. The way I see it, he is one through the whole book. Why on earth is he the love interest here? And WHY ON EARTH does nobody think twice about the fact that their entrance from the surface is likely to have been compromised?! Are they all idiots? Seems like it. Despite the fact that the author is trying to create a smart, bad-ass main character.

Bah...

I have maybe been a bit strict with the story, but that's probably because the language is awful aswell. Not only is this book full of typos and grammar mistakes (where on earth were the editors? Were they even there?), but Hammond also gets the meaning of phrases mixed up. At one point, the character claims to feel like Frankenstein, when what she actually means is that she feels like Frankenstein's monster. Hammond also gets the terms "conspiracy" and "conspiracy theory" mixed up, and it just generally feels like a really, really bumpy ride the whole time. And English isn't even my first language.

Don't bother with this one. It's not worth your time or money, if you ask me. There are so many better options: Enclave, Divergent, The Hunger Games, Nomansland, Ashfall (Ashfall (Trilogy)), Matched, Delirium (Delirium Trilogy 1) and so on...

I quite liked this one, but I can see why it would get low ratings. This isn't the typical fast paced, action packed and dramatic interpretation of this concept, and it may very well crash with lots of people's expectations.

It's a rather quiet, subtle movie; slow and steady and with many characters. To me it felt realistic. The scary part is how quiet it is: One moment a character is alive, the next it's in a body bag, with not a single worry about how much you've gotten to like that person. You don't get sick masses of people looking like zombies with blisters and blood and open wounds and everything in this movie. Nor do you get "Let's have hot, sweaty sex cause it's the end of the world"-scenes. If that's what you want, I suggest you look elsewhere!

A Photographic History of Marilyn Monroe
A Photographic History of Marilyn Monroe
by Marie Clayton
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars A Photographic History of Marilyn Monroe, 9 May 2012

This is more or less "just another one" of those coffee table type of books on Marilyn Monroe. It's constructed around the sort of "rise and fall" angle, and it works well with the selected pictures and text.

For fans who has read a lot about her, I doubt there's any surprises here - none of it is particulary controversial. Nevertheless, it's a beautiful book with many full page b/w pictures and a (pretty shallow) biography. Fairly quick read, and worth picking up again several times, if only just for the pictures.

As usual I miss a literature list, with references to sources. That is of course too much to ask for in this type of book, I realise that, but still. Considering how many false rumours and, well, nonsense there is about her out there, it'd be nice to see where all this (and other) info actually comes from. But like i said: This is a coffee table book more than a history book, and it does what it's expected to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Marilyn' by Andre De Dienes, 24 April 2012
Most people have seen Andre De Dienes' wonderful pictures of Norma Jeane looking happy and youthful on the beach, with wind in her hair and a big smile on her face. De Dienes is one of the most noteworthy photographers who took pictures of Marilyn in my personal opinion, and I love this slipcase of two books.

The first book is an edited version of some of Mr. De Dienes' personal memoirs along with many of his best photos of her, and the second one contains his full machine typed and hand written memories that involved Marilyn. So this is not just a look at a young Marilyn through his camera lens, it is also a glimpse into his world.

Overall a beautiful collection of pictures and text. It's wonderfully executed with the slipcase containing the two books. It seems to be of very high quality, and it's definitely worth the money the way I see it!

I was given this necklace by my better half to go with the 0.08 Carat Diamond with Created Ruby Earrings in 9ct White Gold he had given me before, and it is absolutely beautiful.

As mentioned in the other review here, the chain is quite flimsy. It's very delicate, and that makes it a little bit hard to put on and take off. I might replace it with another chain at some point. But the actual pendant is beautiful, and goes perfectly with the mentioned earrings!

'Metamorphosis' is a very beautiful - and big! - coffee-table type of book about Marilyn Monroe. The photographs are chronologically divided into sections so we get to follow her "transformation" from Norma Jeane to Marilyn Monroe. It is packed with full page pictures aswell as some quotes about her, made by various people who were connected to her in one way or another.

I don't think hardcore fans of Monroe will find much new info in this book, but the pictures are very enjoyable anyways. If you expect rare photos and new information, you'll probably have to look elsewhere, but if you just want to admire the beautiful pictures and read what some of the people around her had to say, then this is perfect!
