First Thousand Words in Portuguese (Usborne First Thousand Words)
First Thousand Words in Portuguese (Usborne First Thousand Words)

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful whatever your age, 29 Oct. 2011
The book cover - and all the other illustrations - may suggest this is a book for children but it is equally ideal for the adult learner. It's packed with vocabulary on all sorts of topics for the visitor - like travel, supermarket, beach - and for the long-term resident - like home, kitchen, garden, party. It manages to be a study aid for all ages and different situations.

I am also impressed with the internet link. You can listen to a native voice pronouncing the vocabulary in the book. It is just one voice and from Portugal. It would be even better if we could have two voices, one being from Brazil, for the different accents.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good variety, 3 Sept. 2011
This book is full of tasty and easy-to-follow recipes. What I like best in the book is the variety of recipes, from main courses and loaves to liqueurs. The 'presunto and cheese loaves' resemble the 'bolas', pronounced 'bowlas', from Northern Portugal. They make lovely savoury snacks. Does anyone know of a book exclusively on 'bolas'?

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly traditional, 3 Sept. 2011
For anyone wishing to get to grips with Portuguese traditional cooking, this is a very good book. It is full of informative photos and the recipes are reasonably easy to follow. What I like best in this book is that recipes - main courses, snacks, desserts, cakes, and others - are grouped by region. For Trás-os-Montes, amongst others, there are five recipes for 'bolas', pronounced 'bowlas' - meat, salt cod, chicken and rabbit, smoked ham, and sardine 'bolas'. These make lovely savoury snacks. Is there anyone who knows of a book exclusively on 'bolas'?

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent companion, 3 Sept. 2011
As the title suggests, this book is about buying property in Portugal, but it also goes further, into renting and selling. Most is on buying, where you are guided step by step. The author really gets to grips with the various issues of buying property in the country, and the book is full of helpful tips on how to avoid potential pitfalls. The book is packed with information and advice and is extremely useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than Piri-Piri, 25 Aug. 2011
The title suggests piri-piri fish dishes but the book has other main course recipes, desserts, cakes. The recipes are written in a down-to-earth way, with no complicated cooking techniques, and are easy to follow. The ingredients can be bought also in the UK. I've tried a number of recipes with good success, just one or two failures. The book is full of stunning photos and the food is lovely. You won't regret buying this book.
