4.0 out of 5 stars A sturdy and hopefully durable case, 8 Oct. 2015

A sturdy and hopefully durable case. I don't mind the extra bulk as the player is very slim and slippery and this makes it much easier to hold. My only quibble is the top flap - it would be MUCH improved with a side-hinged flap.

Fantastic series - epic in scale and filmed like a cinema feature. Great performances all round.

Superb disc. Unlike most opera singers tossing out a few showtunes, Keenlyside has gone to great lengths to sound like the great Broadway stars of the 40s and 50s for whom some of these songs were written. Definitely one of the best Broadway compilations you can buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A neglected gem, 9 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For a 60s B-movie this is one of the best. Using desert locations as well as studio sets and with imaginative design this was promoted as a 'realistic' look at human survival on the Red Planet. Paul Mantee is the lone survivor of a two-man expedition to Mars who overcomes every obstacle thrown at him by the inhospitable environment. The film later strays thoroughly into space opera territory with the arrival of aliens and 'Man Friday' (Victor Lundin). The art design is strikingly realistic - Mars has a red sky decades before this was confirmed by landers. Paul Mantee is a strikingly modern-looking leading man and carries the film beautifully considering he mostly has the screen to himself. In many ways this film has been quite influential over the decades - Dennis Quaid's Enemy Mine from the 80s is practically a remake and the third Riddick film (made last year) owes a huge thematic and design debt to this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than you think, 29 Aug. 2013
I've only seen the first two seasons on BBC3 so can't speak for the quality of the discs but I find this far superior to the UK version which descended into bloated self-parody years ago. The USA version takes all the best elements of Top Gear (the photography, the three-car odysseys, the absurdity and the sense of fun) and leaves out the worst (smug, egotistical middle-aged men showing off to each other). The three American presenters are relatively young, far more personable than the UK originals and have gelled into a smoothly-working triumvirate. They've managed to retain the sense of fun that marked out early Top Gear. They also have a much wider range of vehicles to work with. For a European viewer it's fun to see them take to the roads in bloated luxo-barges, giant pickups or monster artics. Give it a go

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, 5 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Finally the biggest, most overblown and spectacular film musical of them all hits bluray and looks better than new. The picture quality is stunning - colours are vibrant and have been re-graded more accurately so, for example, Babs' gold frock now looks properly golden without the muddy greenish hue of the dvd. The image is so sharp that the detailing in the costumes can now be properly distinguished and is more impressive than ever before. Although Babs was 20 years too young, her talent and professionalism shine through all the ranks of dancers and extras and propel this behemoth on. Jerry Herman's score has never sounded better and I only hope this persuades the studios to start reissuing more of these grandiose confections on the format that currently shows them off best. There are two short extras - a contemporary making-of shot on 16mm which has also been thoroughly restored and a new short interview with Gene Kelly's widow. There is NO comparison between this and previous releases - this is by far the best so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 3 April 2013
Having been a Bond fan since the 60s I was blown away by the transfers on this set - sharp damage-free images with vibrant colours and every single film looking better now than when I saw them at the pictures. Even without the extras this set would be worth every penny. One thing I have to add is that the bonus disc in my set includes all 22 title sequences which it is possible to watch back-to back over the space of just over one hour. Maurice Binder's work was stunning but you have to have a high tolerance for naked girls and phallic guns to watch them all in one sitting. But still one of the best blu-ray boxes out there at the moment.

The picture quality on this is incredible. Spread over two discs and with some short extras to boot this is a must-have for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best release yet of a flawed masterpiece, 13 Oct. 2012
A complex, sophisticated, allegorical story of 20th century Italian history featuring a young De Niro and Depardieu as childhood friends, Novecento (1900) has now, finally, received the release it deserves. Compared with the fuzzy luridly coloured picture on previous dvd releases this bluray release is a revelation and finally does justice to Storaro's painterly cinematography. There is no comparison between this and earlier dvd releases. The colour balance is natural, the image is amazingly sharp and shadow detail is subtle. The accompanying dvd contains a contemporary 'making-of' documentary as well as various new interviews with Bertolucci and others associated with the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unjustly cancelled cult piece., 17 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's astonishing to think this intelligent witty teen horror series from BBC3 was cancelled in favour of long-past-its-sell-by-date Being Human. This blu-ray release goes some way to making up for that. The picture quality is fantastic and there are sufficient extras to make it worth purchasing. Positives include superb casting (with one glaring exception) - Iain de Caestecker and Daniel Kaluuya are both fantastic with help from a luxury supporting cast - any one of Claire Rushbrook, Tom Ellis, Johnny Harris, Joe Dempsie and Natalie Dormer would give any show class. Unfortunately Sophie Wu as The Girlfriend is not in the same league as everyone else and does drag down every scene she is in, but only marginally. The script is intricate, possibly too much so and the serial is a bit too long but the direction doesn't skimp on the horror and the sense of eerie dread is impressively maintained. The visuals are extremely well-executed for a low-budget show and any youth-market horror series that can reference both Romeo and Juliet AND Cyrano de Bergerac in the same scene gets my vote. There are far far worse shows out there that get renewed year after year so spend your money on this blu-ray and you won't be disappointed.
