Really tried with this one as I thought the story outline sounded promising. A dissipated, cynical sports journalist with a terminal illness, going to any length to trace a once famous cricketer who had disappeared from the scene. BUT what a laborious read. Couln't get more than half-way and gave up........worn out!

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely unlikely story, 25 Mar 2013

Highly unlikely - but a really good story. In this book you do care what happens to the people involved. It's a shame Rachel Joyce didn't keep Harold's journey solo all the way. The Pilgrims who join him for a while rather spoil it - not just my view , but also of friends who have read it. It's very sad in places but has ha happy ending. A thoroughly good read.

Although no one in this book is very pleasant, so you don't care for them too much, you can't wait to see what happens. Great twists and turns and an unpredictable ending.

Have read most of Ian McKewans's books and really enjoyed this one. I reckon it's probably one of his best. He is a great observer of the seventies and a compelling writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Creepy and Thought provoking, 25 Mar 2013

Fascinating read - a touch of the George Orwell about it. It's only fifty or so pages and would be a great book for book club discussion.

Haven't finished this mammoth book yet and won't be purchasing the sequel. Have read other Booker winners like Ian McKewan and found them to be absorbing, but not so this one.
