Beethoven: The Complete Symphonies and Piano Concertos
Beethoven: The Complete Symphonies and Piano Concertos

5.0 out of 5 stars the greatest of all, 17 Sept. 2013
I purchased this some years ago - partly because I had the privilege of seeing a live performance of the 9th at the Royal Festival Hall. Okay - I might be prejudiced as my mum was a member of the Philharmonia Chorus and I well recall her practising at home - but the memory of such a beautiful interpretation with Klemperer conducting from a seat and using only one hand - he was recovering from a stroke, I believe, has stayed with me over the years. I have deliberately listened to other recordings of the symphonies and honestly feel that this is by far the best - the interpretation is spot on and whilst all the symphonies are terrific, the 3rd movement of the 9th - its fluidity and dynamics are beyond compare and can move one to tears- though Barenboim and the West Eastern Divan Orchestra must be mentioned as a comparable 2nd. The only moan is that the Emperor piano concerto with Barenboim strikes me as a trifle slow, and the omission of 'Egmont' is a shame.
A recording to treasure and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas gift, 30 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was purchased as an Xmas gift for my grand-daughter who is hoping to be a vet - her comments are that it is brilliant, gives her all the information that she requires, and has some excellent colour photos - as she spent some considerable time perusing it before Xmas lunch, I think I can safely say it was a winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars light hearted, amusing and enjoyable, 30 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Yes, this is black and white, but that does not deter from such a lovely ballet - the original caste had been re-assembled for this recording and it shows David Blair at the height of his ability - he really was a brilliant dancer and his spins were incredible. Nadia Nerina danced beautifully and partnered David Blair well, but the accolade has to go to Stanley Holden who was brilliant - his characterisation as 'the dame' was wonderful and amusing and his clog dance hilarious. Likewise, the opening chicken dance was very well and ably performed and set the tone of the whole lighthearted ballet. Lovely music by Herrold and Ashtons choreography unsurpassable - very watchable

5.0 out of 5 stars pot pourri of pleasure, 30 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What a lovely selection of scenes from the best of the Royal Ballet. It is impossible to fault the cast of the Royal Ballet and to have such artistes as Mariannela Nunez, Thiago Soares and Carlos Acosta among others showing their artistic ability makes for a thoroughly enjoyable dvd. A real treat and one that you want to watch again and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars the old ones are the best!, 30 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's a shame we do not have more Al Read recordings - he really was incredibly funny and his observations were so true to life. Yes, these shows are dated and in black and white, but they are a pleasure to watch and there is nothing smutty or distasteful about them - just good old clean, honest humour on life

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting....., 1 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This has to be one of the best recordings of overture'Egmont' I have heard - met expectations, but at times the brass sounded too loud and out of control which was a slight disappointment. The Ninth symphony again suffered in places from the same problem, but apart from that it was a lovely interpretation, particularly the 3rd movement, where the sustained legato heped the whole movement just flow from start to finish. An interesting, enjoyable recording I will enjoy listening to many times.

5.0 out of 5 stars just the bin!, 31 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
this is a good quality item, very easy to keep clean with a sturdy handle for carrying.
It looks good on the worktop - MUCH better than the plastic bin provided by the council. The size is fine and the compostable liners available in supermarkets are a good fit.
Well pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars the good old days, 29 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is many years since I last read this book, and recall thoroughly enjoying it, so decided to read it again. To my surprise, I enjoyed it even more second time around - on contemplation I think this was because with the passage of time and experience of life you are able to appreciate this wonderful 'diary' even more, and it does hark back to a former way of life which is alien to the younger generation - a real touch of nostalgia! The gentle humour and observations are wonderful, and I am delighted to re-aquaint myself with this book. Enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars not my style, 29 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is not often I find a book disappointing - basically I like to be entertained and/or informed and I do enjoy reading a variety of books. However, this one I really struggled with.
The first few pages put me off as they were all about football - mainly the World Cup - and the only two words that evinced any interest were Alan Shearer. I struggled on, but pages on Marlene Dietrich singing and the differences twixt German and English plumbing, left me bamboozled.
Perhaps I am not intelligent enough to appreciate this book, or perhaps it is a mans book.
Regrettably this book will be consigned to the charity bag - a rare occurrence in this establishment.

5.0 out of 5 stars an eye - opener, 18 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I must confess this is the first time I have watched Romeo and Juliet, and I was very pleasantly surprised - the musical score was easy to listen to and Fonteyn and Nureyev are always a pleasure to watch - they dance so well together and clearly have a 'connection'.
David Blair was an excellent Mercutio and his dying scene was brilliantly executed.
This was filmed in a studio by J Arthur Rank, but this did not detract from it, perhaps it enhanced it and the settings and costumes were of the usual high standard one expects from the Royal Bsllet.
A most enjoyable production, colourful, excellent corps de ballet - very watchable.
