Tales of a Thames Lighterman : Review, 28 May 2009
As I am researching my family history and we have a long line of Thames lightermen in the family,I have been looking for information to broaden my knowledge of this trade and lifestyle. It is difficult to get first hand accounts from the past but this book provides the next best thing, a description of an occupation that was normal in my childhood but is now slowly fading into history. These are accounts that need to be preserved for future generations so that they understand the world of their grandparents. We are not always so lucky and just have to guess at what our grandparents lives were like.
This book provides what it says in the title, a description of the life of a Thames lighterman. I was told of its condition accurately and I had researched prices and found that this was value for money in comparison with others. It is always helpful to have seen an actual copy before buying and sometimes I request them from my library but rare books are difficult to get hold of and you just have to take a chance. In general, I have not been disappointed.
