British Made Hard Anodised Baking Sheet..
British Made Hard Anodised Baking Sheet..
Offered by for cooks
Price: £12.99

1.0 out of 5 stars A good buy? I'd have to buy others to compare ..., 16 Oct 2014
The seller delisted this from Amazon and has relisted to loose/avoid my original review - the description has changed slightly, but here is my original review - please note changes between the new and original listing details and the fact that UK law now requires reimbursement of p&p by the seller if goods are not exactly as described -

The claimed packed weight actually persuaded me to buy this - it would have to a VERY generous thickness. It might well weigh 2kg if wrapped in lead, but the sheet actually weighs 600g and is not a particularly heavy gauge as a consequence. It is also a soft (pliable/bendable) grade of aluminium.
The brand delivered here was Paton Calvert - Cordon Bleu range, which is not listed on their website, so could be obsolete stock. The listing stated it was Bradware, which does not seem to have any mention on the www - that should have been a warning to me perhaps.
A good buy? I'd have to buy others to compare to say, but probably no great bargain. Do I want to loose £2.80 sendng it back along with the ludicrous £5.39 charged to get it to me?
On balance, a con and a bit of a rip-off, although the product is actually a good quality, but essentially very standard baking sheet.

I bought one of these about 20 years back and now rarely bother with it.
How well it tracks depends on the shape/size of the carbon fibre tuft that sweeps the record, and that is a bit of a lottery. To effectively dissipate static there must be good electrical connection between the wire arm and the carbon fibres and the base lead has to be earthed. Setting up the balance/down pressure of the brush so that it tracks is also not simple, but once set, is generally OK.

If you use a carbon fibre brush on new records in particular, have a conductive (usually carbon fibre) platter mat (that must be earthed by some route or another), and use Nagaoka record sleeves, this is completely unneeded.

The Teal

3.0 out of 5 stars Picky? Maybe., 16 Oct 2014
This review is from: The Teal (Hardcover)
OK, after 20 minutes browsing, first impressions -
Actually, first a simple fact - near exactly one third of the book is appendices and references.
Perhaps because neither author is English, but apparently us English call Anas (c.) crecca, "common teal". Well, I have never heard it called that. Unlike a great deal of Europe and the Americas, the UK has only a single tiny dabbling duck that is at all common and this is it - teal, no qualification, just teal.
I am in the rare position of breeding ornamental waterfowl, including both (sub-) species, and before the NA (sub-) species was known in aviculture in the UK, the Eurasian birds were known simply as teal or European teal. Only since the 1970's or so, when captive-bred birds of the NA (sub-) species arrived here in numbers have the Eurasian birds been called greenwings and the NA version, American of NA greenwings (there are SA greenwings but they seldom get called anything but un-confusing English names).
Now, an unforgiveable, terrible schoolboy error - Fig. 9.7 shows two colour mutation teal with the caption that includes - "..... breeders have produced a range of Teal varieties in captivity .....". Totally and utterly incorrect.
Natural genetic mutation produced the changes in colour, which a degree of inbreeding in captive stocks made visible (most colour mutations are recessive, so that an individual has to carry two copies of the controlling gene(s), one from each parent, to show its effect, in this case a change in colour. That gene is almost certainly inherited from a common ancestor to both parents as genetic mutations such these are so very rare that the same mutation occurring twice in close proximity and time, are all but nil). Man has guaranteed perpetuation of the genetic mutation by selective breeding, but no person ever produced it.
Are these colour mutations, varieties? No, not in any normally accepted sense, they are simply colour variants/mutations.
Chapter 2 starts - ""Like most dabbling ducks, teal show a strong sexual plumage dimorphism." There are around 50 species of dabbling ducks, and a quick survey shows only around a third of those show marked sexual dimorphism.

More to follow when I have done some more reading......

The Plantfinder's Guide to Growing Ferns
The Plantfinder's Guide to Growing Ferns
by Martin Rickards
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best, apparently, 24 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this before trailing round the internet looking for nurseries and one ultra-specialist fern nursery said that it was by far the best on the subject that is currently available - my experience of it would suggest that the comment was very likely accurate.

Excellent, straight-forward, well laid-out and very readable.

Varta LED Day Torch Including 2 x AA Batteries
Varta LED Day Torch Including 2 x AA Batteries
Price: £6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Time will tell how good the switch is - the torch itself should last ..., 24 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is well made - plastic encased in an aluminium tube, but light.
The near certain major minus point to it - the switch is a press button toggle. I use a torch very frequently as I have to tend livestock in the dark for a few months each year and the switch is ALWAYS the problem with torches that have them, rather than ones which screw up to make a contact to switch them on.
Time will tell how good the switch is - the torch itself should last for years. Based on experience, if the switch lasts more than 2-3 years with me, it will be unusual. (I had a Tekna torch until recently (left on top of the car, and then I drove off), that was approaching 30 years old and still worked absolutely fine. Twist action switch. Tekna Inc. long since defunct.)

It is very well made - probably turned from solid aluminium, and it is protected from corrosion by being chemically blacked and oiled. ( I usually use a torch outdoors, working on something, holding any torch in my mouth, so being oiled is not a plus in my own case). The focus/dimmer/zoom function isn't really what it claims and works in the opposite sense to the label on it.
The near certain major minus point to it - the switch is a press button toggle on the end. I use a torch very frequently as I have to tend livestock in the dark for a few months each year and the switch is ALWAYS the problem with torches that have them, rather than ones which screw up to make a contact to switch them on.

Being a car driver rather than cyclist, I can say that it is easily bright enough to severely dazzle any car driver if poorly positioned on a bike - cyclist please note this pet hate of mine.

Offered by Floralcraft
Price: £3.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Fit for intended purpose only, 13 Sep 2014

To be honest, I was expecting/hoping for too much. The basket is lightly but well-made and would suit the intended short-term usage as a basket for flower arrangements etc. Looking for something robust that might see some extended use? Then look elsewhere.
The sizes given are external - you loose about an inch/25mm on the diameter and half an inch/10mm depth, internally.
