Ambitious but unresolved film. It's a very hipster work like we got used to after a whole generation of wanna be filmmkaer tv-stars thought the world needed to see their artistic potential at work. Maybe it can amaze some american audience but I frankly don't get surprised or interested in artsy farty stuff like that. It makes you neither think nor laugh. It's basically a film that should have not been made. It's like a "fat" comedian tried to convince us he's more profound than his escatologic jokes: didn't make it

4.0 out of 5 stars A great quartet for a acting-based film, 27 April 2014

This is a little yet strong film, where all the "action" is in acting and atmosphere. A camera-film I would call it. Worth watching, especially because is one of Hoffman's last great performances. Blu ray quality is definitely good

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 27 April 2014

There's something potentially great about this film, that is not developed as it might have been. Let's say the beginning and the end let you think it could have been a little big scifi gem. Pity that all the central part is weak. Despite that, I enjoyed it and wanted to watch it through to the end. Maybe it's because there some visual stuff that's very good and Tom Cruise still puts himself 100% into each role he plays so he makes you believe the film is worth watching. And so you find yourself filled with emotion at the end of the story. I just hope they won't make a sequel or a prequel: part of its charm lies in the fact it's an uncomplete movie, in its not fully expressed potential. Both the audio and video quality of this blu ray are very very good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost a masterpiece, unfortunately just a good movie, 15 Feb 2014

4 stars is maybe too much, but I acknowledge its ambition. A story of blood and fate that unfold over 3 generations across different family and situations, an invisible tie that bounds 3 lives whose common ground is a land where people are alone and individualism kills the spirit of individual himself.
Some great scenes, a great cast, maybe it's all too mechanic and cold, but it's definitely an uncommon movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cold, grey noir, 15 Feb 2014

I never visited London in the early 80ies, but watching this movie I feel like being there and I'm pretty sure it depicts the city and the era in a very realistic way. And maybe that's one of the strengths of this movie. It's not just a bleak, grey tale of a mean yet unconsciously weak "business man" who becomes victim of his ambitions (Bob Hoskins, one of world's greatest actors).
It's a crime movie where the true crime to be committed is a deep social and economic change of a Country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Masterpiece, 15 Feb 2014

1 room, 12 lovely actors, a great script and an "invisible" yet incredibly clever and balanced direction. That's all you need to make a great movie and get the viewers stuck on the screen, holding their breathe up to end. You'll meet a various range of human beings, with their strengths and their weakness, with their doubts and point of views, and you'll feel sympathy, anger, tenderness of hate towards them. And that's what I call a great movie. When, at the end of it, you feel like you've spent 2 hours with someone and their lives.

2.0 out of 5 stars a missed opportunity, 21 Aug 2013

It could have been a nice and scary revival of Hammer atmospheres and films, but it's too predictable and flat to really be scary, although some scenes are great and reveal the unexpressed potential of the movie

Thanks to Joe Dante, if you don't enjoy it too much at least you can appreciate some of his touches, like in the fantastic race through some famous paintings (the best sequence of the movie without any doubt)

4.0 out of 5 stars Extremely dark and realistic, 21 Aug 2013

The great thing about this movie is that nothing really huge happens, until the end, yet it really unsettles you, because of its slow and progressively dark pace and because of its style, which makes you feel and live not just the surface of the events, but also the feelings of the characters.
It's like they took Paranormal activity, with its exhausting expectations for something that can happen anytime but does not until the end, and made it less amateurish and more cinematographic, resulting in something stronger and deeper because it seems to be less merely observational.
So basically it's a good movie, yet it could have been a masterpiece if it didn't reveal what it's about (aliens) at least for the first half (it would have been "funny" if it kept the mystery behind those extraordinary facts making you guess if it was about ghost instead of aliens, at least for a while).
