4.0 out of 5 stars Probably Aronofsky most mature film, 7 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Black Swan [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Probably the best Aronofksy film along with his B/W debut.
The one where his often overwhelming and a little self-pleasing style finds an appropriate story and content to be accomplished at its best.
It is in fact a dark and morbid version (but also unusually elegant and not so "punkish" or extreme) of the Swan Lake, talking about ambition, sexual fears and a very problematic path to artistic and personal maturity which never turns into the usual cliché of the rebellious and reckless young woman at the edge of normality.
The ballet POV and some smart editing ideas (mixing different levels of reality and imagination) are quite effective and they prove that Aronofsky, if channeled in a well-scripted and structured story, can use his talent not just to show off.
The blu ray is pretty remarkable and Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis give maybe their best performance so far.

3.0 out of 5 stars A must for all its fan, a milestone in mockumentary genre, but personally I don't find it such an irresistible film, 6 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
BLU RAY
An hilarious and appropriately exaggerated blu ray packaging for the definitive edition of this music mockumentary cult movie.
Fans will be excited and thrilled about it.
There are also cards, booklet, extra and, of course, a mini amp for your guitar street performances.
FILM
About the film, well, I watched it twice and, although I appreciate this kind of experiments (and this was one of the first mockumentaries, maybe the first music one) and love Rob Reiner (who then made Misery, Few Good Men, Harry Met Sally, Stand by me: in few words, an excellent and brilliant director), I've never found it so entertaining and funny.
Of course there is a certain undefined surreal tone, and some ridiculously funny scenes, but all in all I do not find it so genius and so irresistible. Quite slow, with several tired and unresolved moments, and a story that does not unfold so brilliantly as it could have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chamber music meets tango, intimate pop music and much more. A pure delight from start to end, 6 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Juliet Letters (Audio CD)
A precious and charming chamber album from a brilliant and versatile artist.
A concept album, who will delight you from start to the end, and with some vibrant, elegant and lovely tracks like Damnation Cellar, Jacksons Monk & Rowe (musically marvelous) and I almost had a weakness (mixing tango and string music).
I wish one day it will be released on bluray audio

4.0 out of 5 stars Alien meets King Kong, in an unusual and unexpected horror/drama, 6 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Host [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
From a fantastic and versatile director (someone who excels in crime like Memories of Murder, drama like Mother, distopian adventure like Snowpiercer) comes a surprising and moving horror/drama, a curious and perfectly accomplished mix of Alien and King Kong.
With all the thrilling but also the mercy for the beast,
It is not just a director amusement, but another way, another occasion for this highly talented guy to decline his sense of drama to the next genre, and still engage and enthrall the audience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wilson makes Gershwin a pop star., 6 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A most welcome return of the genius of pop music, who take Gershwin world and revisit it in his typical style.
So Rapsody in blues becomes an acappella song, It's wonderful turns into a lovely bossanova and They can't take that away from me sounds like a 60ies highschool song.
An interesting and very enjoyable experiment, proving Gershwin is still universal and fresh even today.
All very soft and lighthearted, sometimes working better sometimes less.

3.0 out of 5 stars The real "tell it like it is" is another one: look for Neville Brothers album, 6 Oct. 2015

This review is from: Tell It Like It Is (Audio CD)
A good album with some nicely composed songs, various enough but not totally good.
Try another album, with the same title, by the Neville Brothers. That is the one and only "Tell it like it is"

5.0 out of 5 stars A film like no others, where you suddenly feel and remember the fundamental questions and mysterious side of life, 6 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A splendid hd transfer that really does justice to this incredible and unique masterpiece and its style.
If not the best, one of the most superlative and mesmerizing films of that great director from downunder called Peter Weir.
Picnic is a story that does not really evolve but lives on an incident, a mystery that happens in the beginning and just freeze times, people and feelings. All stuck on that flashing moment when nature, life, death and all the transcendent and metaphysical elements of our existence just emerge and tear our certainties apart.
And this could not happen and being told on another place than Australia.
Picnic at Hanging Rock is a stylish yet dense, deep and intense painting where echoes, memories, impressions and panic feeling of loss and liberation just compulsively overlay, creating a really unique atmosphere, a nightmarish daydream.
The only way to find out if you like it is watching it, without prejudice, but just letting yourself be taken away from your present dimension and your viewing habits, to enter a slow, intriguing and ethereal experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just a brilliant parody, but a cinematographic masterpiece. One of the few great and original comedies of the new millennium, 5 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Their masterpiece along with Hot fuzz. A amused and irresistible parody of the genre, with such a rich variety of scenes, ideas and brilliant script and visual solution, that makes it something much better and more than just a parody.
Here cinema is not just a vehicle to tell a funny story, but its language, its references and its mechanism are so well exploited and manipulated to entertain you in a surprising, refreshing and innovative way.
Down to the genius ending, that reveals all the irreverent yet smart british spirit of this brilliant operation

2.0 out of 5 stars A half-missed opportunity, 5 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Blue Valentine [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I don't know: the actors and the structure (a mix of flashbacks and flashforwards telling the casual beginning and the unpredictable twist of a love story) could make it a little gem.
But unfortunately I found this film not mature or well developed at all.
The point is that, after the engaging and compelling start, it reveals a certain lack of depth, genuinity and, most of all, it just shows emotion and depth but does not do much to make you feel their story.
A story that remains just a good subject, but does not properly unfold to become memorable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Old classic Elton John meeting Sex Pistols and singing James Taylor's lyrics. A fantastic live album, 5 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Ben Folds Live (Audio CD)
A live album masterpiece. Never heard about this guy before I read a review about this album and decided to buy it just by trust.
I found out this wonderful entertainer who plays with the energy of a rockstar and the class of a swinging pianist. It's like classic Elton John meeting Sex Pistols, with a touch of classy intimate Seventies songwriter.
Right from the opening song (One Angry Dwarf And 200 Solemn Faces) you can feel the vibration and the fine touch of a totally unsual talent, who mixes jazz, chamber music and rock, but with the added value, here, of a solo acustic performance, which makes it sound even better and more genuine.
Then listen to the harmonies of Silver Street and the beginning of Jane (that sound like a Keith Jarret or a Pat Metheny piano composition), and then enjoy the sudden ragtime twist right in the middle of Army.
The best part of this wondeful album are, to me, the more complex and not sing-along tracks, where he can explode his musical talent and also surprise the audience with uncommon chords and lyrics.
Yeah, of course, the lyrics: most of his songs are the perfect conjunction of music, execution, singing performance and words. Little stories from the past, the youth, and the hidden corners of abandoned houses.
One of the few great and last albums of the new Millennium
