3.0 out of 5 stars good and sometimes brilliant dark comedy, 17 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
this film is worth watching: Bruce Willis is a mean and convincing boss, the young actors are cool, some scenes are brilliant, you get stuck on the plot to see how it's going to end. Some moments are well done (in terms of editing and narration) some smartly make fun of some American idiocies. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a good young movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing, but didn't expect much, 17 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I know, I should have not expected the good old Coppola, and in a way that's not what I wanted: I could cope with his second youth, when he wants to experiment again, almost forgetting his past self.
But, apart from some strangely familiar scenes, and some powerful shots (like in the beginning) all the rest is just a pointless, flat, weak tale full of clichès.
Don't waste your time nor your good memories of old Coppola

...to entertain you at 100% (which is good news anyway). Don't ask for more: it's not a Pixar movie, so the relationship between Man and Monster is not developed. If you're looking for that, just go and watch again "Monsters Inc".

...and least known.
For once he puts his showing off ambtion aside and concentrate on a little story, just like the little company of actors it is about. And succeeds in finding the best, most genuine and effective way to accomplish the main mission behind all his filmography: proving Shakespeare is still alive and can be found where you don't expect, and that he's more than just a Shakespeare disciples

4.0 out of 5 stars Paul Schrader's unknown masterpiece, 4 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Blue Collar [DVD] (DVD)
Spike Lee's recently included it in his all times favourite movies.
And there's more than one reason for it: it's one of fewest american movies dealing realistically with working class, it's documentaristic as in the best 60s/70s tradition, it came out at the beginning of the Reagan Era, its Paul Schrader without being to extreme and tragic as usual.
A great cast of actors playing a bunch of puppets of the Society, totally enslaved in their mentality to work and profit and individualism, thus loosing any sense of collectivity, which is what make them slave.
The director follows them during their dayjob in the factory and nightfun like they were still kids with a family.
He puts you right next to them, sharing the same laughs and rage and frustration and human desires and relation problems.
But it's like watching some animals in a cage. A movie that's as much close to its characters situation as it is totally and cinically hopeless about any possibility for them to change. Watching it now, after 30 years it was made, made me realise how society has changed to a point of no return: which started exactly 30 years ago

Twilight's Last Gleaming [Blu-ray] [1977] [US Import]
Dvd ~ William Smith

4.0 out of 5 stars 20 years before The Rock, 20 times better, 4 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Now I know The Rock's main reference: the only different is that this movie doesn't sound false like the (however) funny Michael Bay's movie. And that's not just because the cast is so good, but because it comes from an era when still american movies had something to say about and against their society, and it comes from a director who's never back down from being himself: Robert Aldrich (Dirty Dozen, Whole nine yards, Attack, etc...).
A solid political, military thriller with a bitter sense of loss and defeat and tragic lack of prospective

4.0 out of 5 stars Little great movie, 4 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You can't really tell if this is an independent movies or a holltwood drama, if it's about generational conflicts or buildung-romance, if it's intimistic or smartly funny. Characters are surreal and true at the same time, acting is right as it should be, direction is never "cool" like most sundance-like movies nowadays. It's just a great little piece of lives and life that's worth watching and living

4.0 out of 5 stars A great little series, 4 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Marchlands [DVD] (DVD)
This time ITV beats BBC: it's always exciting when commercial TV competes with public service for the better.
This series is halfway between mystery, horror, thriller and drama, but what really strikes you is the fine fine way it interweaves many different stories and temporal dimensions which take place in the same house, to progressively enrich the plot and unfold the story. Wonderfully directed and edited, what a great idea to show you different stories in the same places through the constant leap back and forth from a decade to another. It's like it opens your eyes to all the layers, memories and cause-effect links and relations accumulating in a place over the years: much more than just telling you a complex story.
Almost a philosophical vision of life and things, where entertainment never prevails over sensations and emotions, courageously slowing down the narrative pace withouth fearing to be (also) deep and evocative, and not just thrilling and breathtaking.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars despite the ending, 4 Aug 2013

HAts off for this mix of Cube & The Apprentice. It rally keeps you stuck on the screen with ust few actors in a room. Call it theatre or whatever, to me it's just great cinema and script. Had it not ended like that, it could have been a hopeless pamphlet on the dark greedy side of manking and capitalistic society. It almost hit the point: maybe they wanted it to end more in a hollywood way than in a disenchanted cinical british one. What a pity!

...if turned out to be a mockumentary.
But you can't tell if they take themselves seriously or not.
Undoubtedly it's very well done, but I would not give it 4 stars if they really believe in what they say: analysing a movie like they do is totally pointless and it's useful just to make people reflect that true masterpieces don't give you answers but new questions, more layers of interpretation, etc....
