A Lasting Peace Through the Federation of Europe and the State of War (Dodo Press)
A Lasting Peace Through the Federation of Europe and the State of War (Dodo Press)
by Jean Jacques Rousseau
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.99

Pretty terrible copy.

What is important to understand is that this is a direct copy of a 1917 translation of Rousseau's essays; A Lasting Peace Through the Federation of Europe and The State of War. It also has an introduction by Vaughan (1917), which is insightful and enjoyable. However, beyond the original text that is it, no bells, no whistles. No glossary, publishing info or contemporary introduction explaining when/why the translation was produced. The original translation was produced in 1917, the heart of WWI and near the birth of the League of Nations. That in itself would have made for an interesting contemporary intro.

This copy is also extremely difficult to reference. I don't know when it was produced, where it was produced or if it was produced by Dodo Press or Lighting Source UK Ltd. I am trying to use this copy for University but I have to revert to referencing other reprints. On top of that I occasionally come across speling misstakes which leads me to believe this has been typed out word by word. Admirable, yes. Professional, no.

A quick Google search tells me Dodo Press is an online book repository. This is just a cash grab and it shows.

All in all, everything that Rousseau and Vaughan wrote is here for your enjoyment. Great! To provide a review of Rousseau himself is far beyond me. All I can say is it is a masterpiece, obviously. Read and enjoy this copy, just don't expect to be able to reference it. Unfortunately, Penguin (or their ilk) does not produce a copy of these essays outside a Rousseau anthologies. Fortunately, you can find free copies on the web so maybe go there instead. Personally I prefer the feel of a book, but this is a bad one.

China's Political System: Modernization and Tradition
China's Political System: Modernization and Tradition
by June Teufel Dreyer
Edition: Paperback
Price: £37.59

3.0 out of 5 stars Out dated, 14 Feb 2013

This version was published in 1999 and republished in 2000. That should tell you all you need to know. Obviously the history (ancient and modern) is relevant but it still has limited academic credibility. The only reason I bought this is because the more contemporary version is very expensive, and that is the only reason I would recommend this over the other.

2.0 out of 5 stars Thin and unimaginative, 14 Feb 2013

This review is from: Fifty Shades of Bacon (Paperback)
Though the title is simply a novelty, that is all it has going for it. The recipes are pretty basic. To be honest anyone could have thought them up in a second, only we wouldn't be able to make a 'Fifty Shades of Bacon' joke. It is obviously just a book made as quickly as possible to catch the bandwagon. All said however, I bought it after all so I suppose they have the last laugh.

5.0 out of 5 stars another great Palgrave., 14 Feb 2013

Being at university I find I suddenly have a lot of books published by Palgrave MacMillan. If you own an of these books you already know they are informative yet readable. Perfectly citable and highly regarded academically speaking but still remains user-friendly. it has nearly everything you need to know about European Politics. There is even a good chance that this already on your core reading list. My only compliant is that they are quite expensive.

This is more of a compact introduction that other alternatives. Though it has all the useful information to get you started, you will be left wanting (and undoubtedly needing) more.

The Oxford Handbook on the United Nations (Oxford Handbooks in Politics & International Relations)
The Oxford Handbook on the United Nations (Oxford Handbooks in Politics & International Relations)
by Thomas G. Weiss
Edition: Paperback
Price: £30.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but expensive., 14 Feb 2013

The problem with Oxford Publishing is that they are good, but they know they are. You find yourself paying out the nose for any Oxford endorsed book but at least you know it is worth it. Very indepth and informative. Everything a Uni student would possibly need to know, only your paying a premium (for the name as much as the info).

Modern Diplomacy
Modern Diplomacy

4.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to subject, 14 Feb 2013

This review is from: Modern Diplomacy (Paperback)
I came into the theory and practise of diplomacy knowing nothing. This book is by no means the be-all and end-all but it is a great start. It has very relevant case studies too from recent years (though you would hope considering the title 'Modern Diplomacy'). Easy to read but still informative.
