5.0 out of 5 stars Domingo in Lighter Mood, 28 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Domingo in his native tongue, singing songs not operatic arias. An appealing disc in lighter mood, he is obviously enjoying himself going back to his roots. It is always good to hear a singer in his native tongue, so enjoy this and think of heat & sunny skies!

3.0 out of 5 stars Visually, A Very Modern Interpretation, 28 July 2015

I purchased this mainly to see Domingo as the leading baritone character, rather than the tenor, which he has sung for years.( I have his 1978 traditional DVD version conducted by Karajan) The action is set in a 'cube' and the stage seems small, the female characters have very exaggerated make-up which is fine for Azucena, to emphasise her madness. Inez looks & acts like a painted doll, Leonora is brilliant as you would expect from Netrebko. Manrico is adequate- but he has got the high C.I wondered at the soldiers wearing top hats, but I was impressed by the voice of Marina Prudenskaya, suitably intense as Azucena, but I thought Domingo rather lacklustre. I have two problems with Part 4: why does Leonora stab herself (and later sing about taking poison?) and she does it too soon, long before the Count appears on the scene. The panels of the cube were used to good effect in different scenes, for example the blood & the symbols of death. Overall, I shall call this an interesting modern interpretation, but I admit to preferring a traditional staging, especially for stories set in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shedding Light on the Dark Ages, 13 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent series, long missed! Thoroughly enjoyed watching it again after all these years, Michael Wood at the start of his TV career telling us about lesser-known historical figures from the fairly distant past, all filmed on location. Most people probably know a little about Boudica, Arthur and William the Conqueror, but these episodes fill in the gaps and we also learn about Eric Bloodaxe, Ethelred- not Unready but ill-advised, Alfred, Offa and Athelstan. Definitely recommended for history-lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories of Childhood... both mine & others., 3 Mar. 2015

I owned this book when I was young-many years ago! and have always remembered the chapters on St. Edmund. Also The Great Plague 1665 'Bring out your Dead' and the Dead Cart, & the Fire of London 1666. I have rediscovered these & many more characters I had forgotten. Each chapter tells the story of a child or young person who lived at the time of a historical event; others include Francis Drake's voyages & a young Roman Briton. The short chapters are in chronological order from 300 AD to 1837 ending with Queen Victoria's childhood. An interesting read for nostalgic adults, and children from age 9 or so.

I read this years ago after seeing the TV series but lost the book & fancied reading it again. Rather dated now but typical of the time- late 70s. A few mild sex references which all popular novelists seemed to think was obligatory, and a few instances of 'gunning the (car) engine 7 slightly unnecessary mentions of the car make & model. After the criticism, an exciting & unusual tale which makes sense at the end.

Excellent product, I believe professional quality. I needed discs I can rely on, having had some failures, these seem to fit the bill and 100 stack should last a while & save continual repurchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed viewing the scenes I have recently re-read, 6 Jan. 2015

A little escapism for a grown-up fan of S&A, I enjoyed viewing the scenes I have recently re-read. Liked Rosemary Leach as Mrs Barrable, the big boys were nasty enough & the younger children were all believable; lovely scenery & some 'mild peril' to add a bit of tension Thoroughly enjoyable & recommended.

This is a Film of the Book more or less, as in many cases the film has to omit some of the detail, I presume because of time constraints. Nevertheless it is enjoyable, especially having had to wait some years for the DVD release, and having read the book several times. As always, Josephine Tey has a good plot & interesting characters. I think Athene Seyler matches the description of Aunt Lin in the book, though Dulcie Gray is an English rose type rather than the 'gypsy' type in the book. She & husband Michael Denison always act well together. I recommend this film & suggest watching it before reading the book (also recommended)

5.0 out of 5 stars Three Nights At The Opera with Placido Domingo, 19 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a great box set of 2 French & 1 Italian operas, possibly not so well-known apart from a few arias appearing in compilations. These are live recordings from the 1980s when Domingo was at his peak, his leading ladies being Shirley Verrett in L'Africaine & Samson et Dalila, Eva Marton in La Gioconda. I thoroughly enjoyed the performances of these operas, which were new to me as a Domingo fan. They are traditionally staged & it feels like a proper 'night out'. The supporting singers who include some familiar names add to the experience. Thoroughly recommended!
