5.0 out of 5 stars Completing the set, 16 Dec. 2010
Just bought this book, to go alongside the two similar Peter Barton books on the Somme and Passchedaele that I already own. All three are marvellous works, combining "big picture" and local detail and of course with their wonderful use of contemporary maps, panoramic pictures, etc. Well done to Peter and Jeremy on another triumph. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mapguide, 15 Oct. 2010
Good pocket or handbag sized guide. Size means that you have to turn pages for the maps to cover any significant distances (like an A-Z), but this is a small price to pay for a guide that's easy to use and store. Brief sections on attractions, museums, etc, are sufficient for an intro or if you're spending a long weekend in NYC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wipers Times, 13 Aug. 2010
Wonderful compilation of the Wipers Times in its various formats (renamed when the authors moved on, e.g to become New Church Times when at Neuve Eglise). Reading it provokes a mix of laughter and compassion, but overall it gives a great insight into the attitudes of the day and the humour and "sticking it" views of the Tommies in circumstances that we can hardly imagine today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific book!, 15 Jan. 2008
As other reviwers have said, this is superbly researched and put together. The mix of original photos and plans with modern photos of the tunnels and dugouts as they appear now, plus the combination of eyewitness comments and authors' commentary make this a superb production. Having visited mine craters and a few dugouts and the tunnel system at Vimy, this book made me appreciate more fully the scale and organisation of this activity on both sides. Highly recommended.
