5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, 13 Jan 2014

This is a really good collection of songs. Its remarkable considering this is made up of covers, previously recorded songs and outtakes but it just works.
Highlights for me are "American Skin" , "Down on the Hole", "The Wall", "Hunter of Invisible Game" and "The Ghost of Tom Joad".
In fact I would be surprised if there is a single song released this year that is as good as this full band version of TGOTJ... wonderful song

Just a great CD.
Been a fan for around 30 years and this collection of songs is one of the best. Compares favourably with recent fine work such as "Magic" and "The Rising". The production is better than "Magic" which sounds a little harsh in comparison.
Weakest track is the first single but that is by no means a bad song - just goes to show the standard here.
Initial favourites are "Jack of all Trades", "Death to My Hometown", "Rocky Ground", "LOHAD" and "We Are Alive"

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Springsteen (but different), 30 Jan 2009

Forget the negative reviews (cos they're wrong) this is a fantastic CD. I thought "Magic" was probably the best CD I'd heard in 20 years and this isn't far behind that. Springsteen seems to be able to turn his hand to any style and there is a fantastic range of songs on WOAD.

The title track (which some of you may have heard) is probably the worst track on the record and that is by no means bad.

Highlights for me are Outlaw Pete, Queen of the Supermarket (so original), This Life, Good Eye, Kingdom of Days, Last Carnival and The Wrestler.

All in all a superb addition to the Springsteen catalogue. Can't wait for this years tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the Decade - By a mile....., 10 Jan 2008

I see that many people (reviews on Amazon and the Music press) are placing this at the top of the pile for 2007. I think its better than that. Probably the best CD I've heard since Springsteen's Tunnel of Love in 1987.

Standout tracks are Gypsy Biker, I'll Work for your Love, Last to Die, Long Walk Home and Devils Arcade and the rest are excellent.

But this CD, you won't regret it. To the small number of people who've posted negative reviews I'd suggest they listen a few more times...but then there will always be people who prefer manufactured music to the real thing.

Roll on 30th May....

5.0 out of 5 stars Without doubt THE cd of 2005, 12 Jun 2005

There is little more to say than that this is undoubtly another Springsteen masterpiece.
I decided against writing an immediate review (and I would guess that some reviewers may now regret early negative responses) as with all Springsteen's work Devils and Dust improves with continued listenings and has the longevity of previous classics.
I would put this somewhere up with The Rising, Nebraska and the Wild, the Innocent and the E Street shuffle. Ok its not Tunnel of Love or Darkness on the Edge of Town but for me those two albums will never be surpassed by Springsteen or any other artist.
Standout tracks here are Reno, Long Time Coming, Black Cowboys, Maria's Bed, Leah and Matamoras Banks. That covers half the CD an the other half is impressive to say the least. The songs are lyrically brilliant and offer another musical direction for Springsteen.
I was lucky enough to attend both Royal Albert Hall shows at the end of May and these songs come across even better live.
If any of you reading this only know of the Springsteen who sung "Born is the USA" and "Dancing in the Dark" then please do yourself and take a closer look.
If you appreciate real music then you will not be disappointed.
