A Question of Healing: The Reflections of a Doctor and a Priest
A Question of Healing: The Reflections of a Doctor and a Priest
by Gareth Tuckwell
Edition: Paperback

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 23 May 2014

Susan Howatch's "A question of integrity" has quotations from this book as chapter headings. I found some of them interesting and ordered the book. As a psychotherapist to whom spirituality is very important, I thought it might offer some helpful insights. But I was disappointed. I soon realised that the book was written from a very narrow Christian viewpoint with no understanding of, or patience with, other points of view or beliefs. While it might be helpful to people who hold identical views to the authors, I can't see it being of any help to anyone else.

This is an extraordinarily helpful book. I have learned in one day what it could have taken me weeks or months to learn by investigating Google+ by myself. It also has links to some very useful websites. One or two of the links are no longer functioning but enough are valid to make that a minor issue. Very, very good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really sensible book, 18 Feb. 2013

As a doctor with a keen interest in nutrition, I approached this book with interest but without any very high hopes. However, it turns out to be both well written and practical, offering extremely sensible advice on weight control. The author concentrates on the dieter's mindset rather than on an actual diet and shows ways in which bad eating habits can be changed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really valuable book, 15 Feb. 2013

Written by someone who has owned golden retrievers for years . . . and who clearly loves them . . . this is an excellent resource for anyone who owns or is thinking of owning one of these dogs. It covers everything from the history of the breed to care and training and contains some wonderful photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book, 12 Jan. 2013

I know nothing at all about Panama and was really interested to find that, while most of the superstitions covered in the book are new to me, some are also observed in the UK. The stories are fascinating and benefit from the inclusion of photos of the story-tellers.

Herbalism is a huge subject and Deborah Baker has undertaken an enormous task by trying to present its essentials in a small book. On the whole, I think she has succeeded. The information is clear and well presented, the illustrations are excellent and numerous self-help remedies are covered. I have only two quibbles:
Firstly I dislike the title . . . 'natural remedies' can cover a wide range and, since this book is about herbal remedies, I think it should state this. And am I the only person who dislikes 'peeps'?
Secondly - and more important - it worries me that the 'precautions' section is hidden away at the end of the book. Although complementary therapies are, on the whole, much safer than orthodox medicine, herbal preparations can be harmful if used incorrectly or inappropriately. In a book like this, the reader is more than likely looking for a treatment for a specific problem and may not read to the end. I would therefore urge anybody who buys this book to read chapter six "A Word to the Wise - Herbal Precautions and Disclaimer" before anything else.

I love French food but a lot of cookery books are useless for me, firstly because I don't have a lot of time to cook and, secondly, because I don't eat meat. This little book, however, is everything I ask for . . . lots of gorgeous looking fish dishes (as well as meat dishes which I didn't look at) plus some delicious-looking puddings. And all the recipes are really simple and straightforward. Nice photos, too!

This is a charming little book with lovely artwork. Children will love it but I suspect that parents may be asked to look under the bed for monsters after it's been read!

The Gardens Of The Dead (Father Anselm Novels)
The Gardens Of The Dead (Father Anselm Novels)

1.0 out of 5 stars A book that should not have been written, 26 April 2011

It's hard to believe that this is by the same author as "The Sixth Lamentation". That was intricate, at times hard to follow, but gripping from start to finish. This, by contrast, has a ludicrous plot, one important non sequitur, and two-dimensional characters who are so boring I'm surprised they don't send each other to sleep. Even Anselm who, in the first book, was an interesting character, has dwindled to an insubstantial shadow.

It feels as though, having been successful with the first book, Brodrick was persuaded by his agent or publisher to write a second "Father Anselm". What a pity he agreed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful!, 23 Mar. 2011

Kaspersky was recommended to me . . . I had been using AVG and was finding it caused things to go a bit slow. But Kaspersky turns out to be in a class by itself. For a start, it takes about ten minutes to get going when the computer boots up and, during that time, it's imposible to launch any other programme. It upgrades about three times a day - nothing wrong in that except for the fact that it takes forever and, while it's downloading the data, the rest of the computer comes to a standstill. It's quite impossible to do anything else while a scan is running, either. The one point in its favour is that, if you stop the scan, when you restart it will pick up where it left off, so the scan can be done piecemeal.

To be fair, my husband's computer and my laptop also have Kaspersky and, on them, it's not too bad because their hard drives are more than half empty. But for anyone who has a lot of data on their computer I would say avoid Kaspersky like the plague!
