4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and Intelligent, 6 Jun. 2014

I loved Heroes when it was weekly on BBC, but seeing the whole story arc in the box set makes you realise just how absorbing the characters are and how carefully plotted the whole thing is from the beginning. And thankfully, here's one TV series exploring what "human is" that manages to do it with a bit of humour too. And Sylar is just the best villain ever.

This is such a scholarly book that I'm not in a position to judge the accuracy of Godwin''s mythopoesis. But his conclusion brought tears to my eyes. Et in Arcadia Ego.We are all running down the same spiral path of DNA
that leads all creatures to Arcady. Beautiful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting POD, 18 May 2014

The first half of the book leaves you thinking "What's this all about?" The second part of the book pulls it all together and I absolutely LOVED Tsouras's little joke at the very end.

Iron Winter (Northland 3)
Iron Winter (Northland 3)
by Stephen Baxter
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars No Happy Endings, 27 April 2014

Baxter's Northland trilogy ends uncomfortably with war and famine, massive population movement and desperate struggles for resources. Al an alternate 13th century version of what we in our world face over the next century or two. Then the ice returns.. Like I say. no happy endings.I can see why Baxter took Alldiss' "Heliconia" as his model !

4.0 out of 5 stars Breslau Apocalypse, 28 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an extraordinary and appalling story of heroism and fanaticism that was ultimately for nothing. The courage of the Fallschirmjager and Hitlerjugend troops defending the city is not in doubt, nor is the savagery of the Soviet assault. This pile of rubble fought on till 6th May 1945,dragged down to its own destruction by one man. Karl Hanke. I wish the book had given us a little more on this enigma of a man, but this minor gripe does not mar a shattering and deeply emotive book.Totally recommended!

For me the defining horror of the moral depravity of the Holocaust comes in the throwaway statement of an SS man who asks peevishly what the Jews had to complain about"...after all it's not as if we made them dig their own graves without the proper tools". This is what Speer meant when he talked about the "moral extinction" of the German people. This book is a horrifying resource against those who would refute the Holocaust.Read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars History as high Farce., 19 April 2012
The most surprising thing I learned from this book was just how much of History plays out as a succession of misunderstandings, deliberate or accidental, and how much farce took place during the final collapse of the 3rd Reich: Guderian and Hitler almost coming to blows over strategy(The War Room pie fight in Dr Strangelove, anyone?):Rudel's insane courage on the eastern front which, whilst awesome, was also pointless and redundant. My own particular favourite is the codename for the plot to kidnap the Hungarian regent Admiral Horthy's son: "Mickey Mouse"(Mickey Maus, perhaps?),indeed!A great book, in many ways, I feel, far superior to Ian Kershaw's "The End".

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, 29 Feb. 2012

Adolf Hitler's entire political career as one long hissy fit. It makes a terrifying sort of sense. He thought he was a man of hochkultur. As Mr Spotts points out: It was all just gemutlichkeit! Wonderful. And the author doesn't like Speer. My kind of book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Chilling Study., 16 Feb. 2012

This biography is the definitive life of Goebbels. The clarity and detail is unsurpassed. Goebbels has always been seen as a nihilistic opportunist, but Toby Thacker paints this monster in his true colours. Goebbels was first and always a revolutionary, he alone of the Nazi leadership remained true to himself and it is this that makes him so horrifying. He was a man of high intelligence and acute perceptions. He knew exactly what he was getting into and saw it through to his own squalid Ragnarok in the bunker with his idol Hitler in April 1945. The murder of all six of his children is a crime that is hard to confront, as is the revelation that he stood at the very centre of the genocide of the Jews. Yet he was possessed of manic energy and creativity-very unlike the torpid and basically lazy Fuhrer he served.Perhaps the world should think itself lucky that Goebbels was only a follower and not Fuhrer himself. With Goebbels in charge, I suspect the history of the 3rd Reich would have been very different and NOT in a good way. I'm going to hate myself for saying this, but Goebbels was a very funny man. I laughed out loud at some of his quoted pronouncements and had not realised how biting his humour could be. I can almost imagine spending an uproarious time in his company, but then I see the bodies of his innocent children and the nations of the dead at his heels. Please God, let there never be another Joseph Goebbels.

3.0 out of 5 stars A More Appropriate Sub-title......., 3 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Inside The Third Reich (Paperback)
....would be "The Albert Speer Book of Lies, Half-truths and Evasions".

Gita Sereny concluded that if Speer had told the truth he would have been hanged at Nuremberg. Goebbels said "When we depart, let the earth tremble". He at least remained true to his revolutionary origins. Eliot's phrase "not with a bang but a whimper", springs to mind when assessing Speer's moral ambiguity.Speer betrayed his Fuhrer and ultimately, I believe, himself
