4.0 out of 5 stars Next Stop: Another country..., 18 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Points to a synthesis of critical and post-critical design...the RCA money machine will probably loose them to the better research oriented and cleverer Americans, the Dutch or the Austrians, which would be a shame for the UK.

Memoirs of My Writers Block
Memoirs of My Writers Block
by Jake Chapman
Edition: Paperback
Price: 11.36

5.0 out of 5 stars turns a dirty mirror onto the dull UK writing and publishing market..., 18 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An art-work slumming it as a novel...This funny and clever book is more about the processes of writing and a critique of the UK writing and publishing market and its formulaic and braying reliance on previous successful sellers rather than true literary value. It doesn't just turn a dirty mirror onto the over-stuffed bourgeoise UK fiction industry as much as breaks it and stabs it in the face with the shards...you should all admire the beautiful and funny reflections it produces but remember, its only fiction...or is it?...

Bourdieu for Architects (Thinkers for Architects)
Bourdieu for Architects (Thinkers for Architects)
by Helena Webster
Edition: Paperback
Price: 16.99

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull as dishwater, 17 Nov 2013
Not very useful or interesting...Not for designers, read the actual texts by Bourdieu instead, that would be more interesting that trying this shortcut.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trace of Pop, 8 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Brilliant autobiography which traces the life of one of the UKs most underrated and unsung pop groups EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL and voice TRACEY THORN. A minority report by a major pop talent on a historical moment, this is set to become a new benchmark for literary and intelligent musical autobiography. It begins, kitchen-sink fairy-tale-like with her first audition singing from inside a wardrobe and continues with the same mercurial and quixotic mix of media surrealism and everyday humanity. I read this book in two days, it's that delicious. Classic but unique.

Scripting Cultures: Architectural Design and Programming (Architectural Design Primer)
Scripting Cultures: Architectural Design and Programming (Architectural Design Primer)
by Mark Burry
Edition: Paperback
Price: 22.59

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 15 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The best primer for scripting in architecture that there is. His first-hand analysis of Gaudi and his relevance to today's practice is the best you can get and shows us how much more of a genius he was than we knew previously. Anyone that can reference Flan O'Brien's 'Third Policeman' in relation to scripting gets my money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Images with no Theory, 10 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This has some great images from a mix of contemporary architects but with no theory and little textual analysis its just superficial eye-candy with no real understanding transmitted about what it is you are actually seeing, why it exists and what its consequence is.

by Pyo Mi Young

1.0 out of 5 stars Random collection of diagrams, 7 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is simply a random collection of architectural diagrams arranged by scale and with no explanatory texts. There are bad resolutions/bad quality prints on many of the images, just a magazine-like collection of diagrams.

The Prague Cemetery
The Prague Cemetery

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and funny...or is it?..., 26 Nov 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Prague Cemetery (Hardcover)
Another clever and funny book by this most witty, erudite, learned and entertaining of authors. This is a fictional but historically well researched novel about conspiracy theories which re-writes a causal history of the major events of late 19th century Europe. Its genius is that it ascribes these events to a single character, who, paradoxically seems to be two characters, living side-by-side. A cautionary tale for the present about fakery, evidence, causation, history, literature, politics, food and...almost everything; this book must be read to be (dis)believed. It is also superbly funny. Bravo Eco!

Beauty
Beauty

1.0 out of 5 stars Not great., 8 Sep 2011
This review is from: Beauty (Hardcover)
Scruton's is an old-fashioned, classical, narrow, positivist and elitist view of beauty. If you want a good modern and critical view of the subject read Umberto Eco's book 'On Beauty' instead.
