4.0 out of 5 stars Not man enough for the job - broken in 3 months, 21 Dec 2010
I am afraid the log splitter has finally died a death. The hinges have
broken as has the main bolt holding them. The springs have also rusted and
are coming out of shape even though the device has been under cover during
its life.

Excellent product with one exception. The ratchet is on a hinge made of very weak metal. If the ratchet handle catches on its way down to meet the end of the log (which happens often) and you are unaware of this, the hinge breaks open and the ratchet falls on the floor. You can mend it with a hammer, but it's not ideal. I suggest the makers redesign the ratchet. Having said that it's great especially for making kindling and for helping to quick dry young wood.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware of problem, 9 Dec 2010

I am afraid your log splitter has finally died a death. The hinges have broken as has the main bolt holding them. The springs have also rusted and are coming out of shape even though the device has been under cover during its life. Please organise a refund. This has been in normal use for less than 3 months as we have been away for 1 month. I will send you a photograph of the damage. I have already written and complained about the poor quality of the ratchet catch.

I previously wrote:
This is a brilliant idea and both my wife and I use it everyday. However there is one weakness in the design. There is a sliding ratchet which grips the log at the end away from the blade. This ratchet is held in by a very flimsy hinge which broke the second time I used it. You have to be very careful that when you let the sliding ratchet slide down to meet the log that its pathetic little handle doesn't catch on one of the 'log supporting rods'. If it does and you operate the device the sliding ratchet falls out of its hinge which is made of very soft metal. With care you can avoid this, but a sad piece of poor design in an otherwise excellent product. I couldn't find anything else to split logs simply and easily apart from very expensive electric ones. This saves a fortune on kindling, and for wood burners means your wood dries out in double quick time.

2.0 out of 5 stars A good bit of kit, 15 July 2008
After initial problems with a duff device and bits missing, the problem was resolved by an extremely supportive team. It does provide an impressive log of your electricity usage downloaded onto a PC, and certainly makes you aware if you've left something expensive on. Never manage to get below 200 watts even during the night! It's important to set the transmitter to economy mode as it only runs on batteries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read!, 26 April 2006
Couldn't put it down. You are lectured by some of the worlds greatest scientists, who undoubtably save the western world from the Nazis; it is written with humour and in excellent style. What fortune that the release of this classified information was just in time (but only just) to allow contributions from those who really 'won the war'. The repetition of how Colossus worked by its many contributors allows non-techies to really understand what it did, and how the first computer was British not American! Da Vinci code - eat your heart out!
