5.0 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece, 12 Oct 2008
This review is from: My Own Private Idaho [DVD] (DVD)
River Phoenix plays narcoleptic hustler Mike Waters, who unlike those around him, has a dependent personality and is psychologically unable to move on in his life in any way. The movie shows Mike looking for a home, and fruitlessly trying to trace his mother so that he can re-capture the safety of his childhood. Thrown into the mix are Shakespearian elements, with dialogue loosly based on Henry IV parts 1&2, with Keanu's Scott (Hal) slumming it with William Richert's Falstaffian Bob. There is no answer to Mike's problems ("this road never ends"), he's simply not able to adapt to adult life and take responsibility for himself. It's not his fault; he just has something missing. Deleted scenes show by contrast other male prostitutes getting jobs and moving on. Udo Kier is hysterical as Mike and Scott's client Hans. A true masterpiece.

The modern day line up of C+B celebrates its past glories with the help of plenty of guests, although Harry Muskee lets others handle lead vocals on too many occasions perhaps. The entire band is on great form, though it's Helmig on keyboards and Irwin on guitar who have the most opportunity to show how talented they are. Daniel Lohues does a great turn on guest guitar, though I'm not sure about Huub v.d. Lubbe's vocal on Window of my Eyes. Perhaps Harry should have sung that one. Guests Tineke Schoenmaker and Benny Jolink provide great vocals, but it's Barry Hay (of Golden Earring) who steals the show, managing quite a credible funky dance whilst belting out Another Day, Another Road. Fantastic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Afterglow, 23 July 2008

The first couple of discs here are unremarkable compilations of songs available elsewhere, but disc 3 is laden with rare and unreleased gems. In particular, the track 'Hello my old friend' is what happens when Jeff Lynne starts having fun in the studio, complete with soaring string sections, weird effects and children singing 'Frere Jacques' in the background!!! This track dates from the Secret Messages era, and why Jeff didn't use it at the time I'll never know. This album is a must for ELO fans.

Cuby and the Blizzards are a superb Dutch band who are all but unknown here in the U.K. This album gathers together 18 of their very best tunes from their classic late 60s/early 70s heyday. All lyrics are in English and are occasionally somewhat quirky, but this seems to add to their charm. This compilation features key members Harry 'Cuby' Muskee, Eelco Gelling, Herman Brood, and Helmig v.d. Vegt. Enjoy!
