This could have been one of the greats of the ghost story genre boasting an excellent cast of both old hands and new faces, with a story based (very loosely) on the Peter Straub's best selling novel. It has a good score, great setting and holds its own until well into the movie and then- well I can't quite put my finger on what happened. Whether director John Irvin took his eye off the ball or whether the script did not know how to handle the intricacies of Straub's tale, I don't know. It could be that there is a little too much of Alma's decomposing body, although an edited version shed most of this and if anything, was worse than the unedited picture. Whatever, it loses its way towards the end, which is a shame because the first half is superb watching for ghost fans like me so give it a whirl, it never becomes unwatchable.

I remember seeing this back in '64 as the second half of a programme with the main picture being a Man From UNCLE film. It got me interested in Hank Williams and although I have since become aware of its inaccuracies, it is still an enjoyable picture.

It was withdrawn by MGM shortly after its original release due to threatened legal action from Hank's second wife who claimed the film portrayed her as little more than a prostitute. As the film script was heavily influenced by Audrey Williams, Hank's first wife, who did not have a lot of time for her successor, this is not surprising. The threatened action resulted in the movie being cut to illiminate all traces of the percieved defamation and this is the cut edition. The song 'Kawliga' has mostly disappeared thanks to this but the film is still worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Picture Of Dorian Gray, 28 Nov 2006

A classic film of Oscar Wilde's only novel. It tells the tale of socialite, the handsome Dorian Gray (Hurd Hatfield), who sells his soul so that his portrait can grow old and suffer life's iniquities instead of him. It is Hatfield's finest role, his performance equalled only by that of George Sanders at his cadish best as Gray's friend and narrator of the tale. Angela Lansbury makes her debut as the sweet and innocent girl expected to marry Gray before his descent into a twilight world of bodily pleasures. The end scene, filmed in colour, still packs quite a powerful punch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing through not enough information on listing., 7 Oct 2004

This review is from: Songs Of A Sparrow (Audio CD)
I do not like live recordings appearing on CDs when I am expecting the studio cuts that I wanted to buy! This double CD, although containing some classic material was very disappointing for me, as most of the 'big titles' are live. Piaf was a wonderful artist, both live and in the studio but as one who prefers studio recordings, I feel a little cheated. If sufficient information had been available in the listing or on the CD packaging, it would have saved me from wasting my money!
