4.0 out of 5 stars A Time Machine to the 1980s and i loved it, 30 May 2002
This review is from: Singles Collection (Audio CD)
Moan Moan Moan, this CDs been criticized for being remixed, its BETTER than the original and I barely noticed, you see the 80s was the Electronic age and before Howard Jones there were these guys who pioneered this kinda sound.
This is the quintessential 1980s electronic band and i loved the remix because it appeals to more generations, Vodka and red bull is a good mix and so is this.
Hold Me now is the most melodic track, it really takes you there, also Doctor Doctor and the creepy 'Sister of Mercy' tracks are real ear candy.
These were the genesis of the new romantic era, and its a collectors piece that wont be a home for cobwebs, you'll like at least a couple of tracks, and I think these guys are far superior to some of the more mainstream 1980s groups such as Nik Kershaw.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Timeless album, 30 May 2002
This review is from: Love Songs (Audio CD)
Paul Youngs most polished compilation to date, good backing vocals that dont drown his unique calming vocals.
What I liked about this CD was that the mood and tone is consistent throughout the playing time, you dont get a slow number followed by a loud number, perfectly serene and great for a lazy evening in with your lover.
Whats also cool here is that you get his best 80s stuff (Wherever i lay my hat) and his new stuff (senza una donna) theirs some awesome tracks such as the moody track 'Broken Man' to the more happy 'Softly whispering i love you'. P. Young has transpired all the moods of love in this album, anger, betrayal, despair, happiness, and sarcasm ( which hes good at ).
In contrast to many manufactured love songs this is pearl hidden in empty clams, and its a salacious and memorable piece of work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A haunting + touching ADULT love story without cliches, 23 May 2002
********************NO SPOILERS******.
As the old saying goes, what doesn't find us in life as fate, will find us in destiny.
This film deals with the complexity of grief very well and anyone who has loved will empathize with the 2 central characters in this film. You really give a toss for the characters because their traits are so familiar to us all when it comes to dealing with relationships and not wanting to fall in love because of the pain it can cause..... so heres the story in a nutshell.
Theresa (played by Robin Wright Penn ) is out jogging on a beach one morning and finds a bottle embedded in the sand, in the bottle contains a heartbreaking letter of someone who knows his partner is about to die, Theresa is so infatuated by the heart wrenching contents and poetry in the mans letter she dedicates all her time into finding him and when she does a love story develops and if I go any further I'll spoil it for you.
Now I'm a man and love Boys movies and hadnt cried in 3 years until I watched this film , its THE most beautiful coherent and honest love story told, without pulling any punches, no meaningless sweaty love scenes or whipped cream flying around, just an epic tale of romance , great characterizations, consumate acting from Kevin Costner, Paul Newman (very underplayed and moving) and Robin Penn all very good.
If you like films in the shape of 'City Of Angels', 'The English Patient' , 'Beaches', Terms Of Endearment etc this will be in your collection I must commend Gabriel Yareds moving score for this film its almost as good as the one for City of Angels and it will be in your CD drive for ages.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hot Girls, Hot Wheels, Hot action, 2 May 2002
This is a good action film to watch with you Mates on a friday night with a few beers, you can talk through it and not miss too much because the storylines easy to understand. The action sequences and car chases are really cool and the acting quality is sufficient for this type of film.
Anyone however giving this 5* must be too easily impressed. Their are some laughable elements in this film but in what action film arnet their? you have to deliver a verdict on the basis of entertainment and for that alone the movie delivers. Lots of eye candy for men and women, I can see all the no hopers super charging their Ford Fiestas aping Brian the protagonist of the movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forever Blue is Forever beautiful, 1 May 2002
This review is from: Forever Blue (Audio CD)
Following his mainstream sucess with 'Wicked Game' Chris Isaac released 'Forever Blue' to conflicting reviews from critics who compared this unfairly to Wicked Game.
Let me put this to you straight, if you loved Wicked game and i know no one who didnt then Forever Blue is in the same mould , arguably better.
2 of the most moving songs I have ever heard are on this album and even though 90% of the songs are excellent its worth having alone just for 'Graduation Day' and 'Changed Your Mind'both move you to a monolithic state of emotions.
However Isaac is not the only star he has fantastic support from his band 'Silvertone' they are responsible for the haunting guitars and instrumentals which leaves you feeling chilled out and uplifted.... If you love love songs and moving lyrics with beautiful background music then you'll truly love this, if however you want something more UPBEAT of Isaacs then go for 'San Francisco Days' or 'Baja Sessions'.
If none of the above I know a great self help club for the Musically deprived.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gabriel Yareds only average score, 1 May 2002
Lets put this into perspective, this was Gabriel Yareds 1st composition and a fantastic debut .
Unfortunatly for that reason alone I had to compare it too his latter masterpieces such as 'City Of Angels' 'The English Patient' and 'The Lover'.
At the end of the day if you want the best from this composer I've told you his best. However due to the cult success to this film noir the soundtrack accompanies the film superbly but with exception to the odd saxophone tracks which are hauntingly beautiful the good tracks are cut very short and the 'funfair and ferris wheel music is inane and cheesy not something I would ever have expected from Yared, Imagine Elvis Presley singing 'twinkle Twinkle little star' and you get my point.
I believe Betty Blue is a collectors piece - nothing more, its like watching the 'Great' team you support play an inferior side you know the game wont be that good but your compelled, if your buying this on a whim I would not advise it , too many tracks, too short a playing time, badly compiled as you get a beautiful track then a really annoying cheesy one - go for one of his other works who wants the apprentice when they can have the master?
go for city of angels

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhh - an album for everyone, 1 May 2002
This review is from: Moulin Rouge (Audio CD)
Not since 'Phantom of the Opera' has a film or a 'Musical soundtrack' to boot captivated audiences with its pioneering storyline modified to appeal to the masses and the millennium with such applaudable success.
I loved this soundtrack, I loved hearing 2 of the hottest actors of our generation earn their magebucks and show us such fantastic melifluous voices and deliver the lyrics so evokingly accurate to the core story of the film.
Not since Evita has their been a soundtrack like this, just listen to Ewan Macgregor ( the force IS with him ) sing 'Come what may' it like many others on this album are a tour de force of emotion and originality and renews your faith in Hollywood.
... , whether your taste in music is diversified or not this a cool , moving , retro , hip album and your a phillistine without it
Nice to see David bowie back too

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 songs alone make this rating the rest suck, 1 May 2002
This Concept CD of Wuthering Heights is only a good attempt at a classic, but to compare it would explain why it may fail to impress the masses, but their are 3 truly beautifully crafted tracks on here, 'He's Gone' , 'I belong to the earth' and 'Up here alone with you'.Dave Willetts ( Heathcliff ) is not vocally masculine enough to support such tragically written lyrics, however opera diva Leslie Garrett ( Cathy ) is very good and emotively captures the lament and despair in her tracks. It would be hard to convince people to buy this CD for a number of reasons , for instance its inconsistent and many tracks with exception to those aforementionded are ineffective and nauseating but the sheer force of poetry, musical composition, and inspirational vocals on 3 tracks is in itself worth buying it for. You dont have to be a theatre thespian to like it , its probably better for those with a completely open mind.
For the record an old friend of mine lost a relative who chose 'I belong to the earth' to be played at her funeral and everyone sobbed and asked her 'Who sang that record' ? - YOUR CHOICE THOUGH.

4.0 out of 5 stars ferry takes you on a posh cruise of croon and retro, 1 May 2002
This review is from: As Time Goes By (Audio CD)
When I first listened to this CD I felt like having a bath in Magnum Champagne, but all we had in the house was Asti Spumante. It's a very sensual album and Ferry accomplishes some excellent covers. Whilst staying true instrumentally he stamps his own authority in particular on 'Where or When' and 'I'm in the mood for love'. Ferry has aged like a good whisky , this CD reminded me of earlier works like 'Avalon'. He experiments musically on this album reverting to percussion and woodwind instruments reminiscent of the 1930s -1940s and subsequently recreates the retro genre of music with salacious vocals from his backing singers he sucessfully achieves what he set out to do: SEDUCE YOU, only ferry can add the sort of class he has done on this album.
Soon after he released this George Michael released a similar cover version of 30s music ,( SONGS FROM THE LAST CENTURY) some of which features the same songs ,I advise you to go for the Croonmeister Ferry as it's a lasciviously seducing album.

5.0 out of 5 stars This music feels like a kiss from your guardian angel, 1 May 2002
This soundtrack is so true to the story of the film , it also stands alone as a masterpiece as a sort of concept CD. Anyway the lowdown: Sarah Maclachlan's 'Angel' and Alanis Morissettes 'Uninvited' give virtuoso performances. It's a consistent CD every track is either cool, rocking, or melancholy. The last 4 tracks are my fave by Gabriel Yared who won an Oscar for his score on 'The English Patient' he also scored the music for 'Betty Blue' Message in A Bottle' and 'The Lover' , The 14th track ( City OF Angels ) is so emotive climaxing in a crescendo of Angels screaming in a mass falsetto of heartbreak and lament.
There is nothing to compare it to with exception to ' Passion / The Last Temptation Of Christ'.
I recommend this to anyone as its musical variation , lyrical consistency , and EFFECT is timeless , buy it today and I can guarantee you will be buying some of the other stuff from the compilation of artists who appear on this soundtrack.
Someone once wrote of Guardian Angels , that it is the flapping of Angels wings that makes our heartbeat and when your heart is broken they take you soul to God so he can reincarnate you in to a new host so you have another chance of finding truelove.
Whoever wrote it must have had this CD.
