Foundation's Fear (Second Foundation Trilogy)
Foundation's Fear (Second Foundation Trilogy)
by Gregory Benford
Edition: Paperback

1.0 out of 5 stars Give it a miss, 6 May 2006
Benford is an established author with a following of his own, but he does not shine in this weak novel. He does not seem at all at home in the Foundation context, and the parts where he seems to be writing fluently (the long passages featuring simulations of Voltaire and Joan of Arc) are unlikely to appeal to an Asimov fan. The novel is longwinded, and I found finishing it a tedious chore in the end. Benford's lack of attention to the detail of Asimov's creation (for example he misspells 'Venabili') is a minor irritation, but revealing of his attitude.

Language\30 Turkish with Book
Language\30 Turkish with Book

4.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent series, 9 April 2006
I used this to get a smattering of Turkish for a holiday in Turkey, having previously used other books in the series. For this purpose, it is excellent, if you have some experience of learning foreign languages. The key is to concentrate on the tapes that come with the package, and to try to imitate the pronunciation on the tapes until you can hear no difference between the correct pronunciation and your own. To native speakers, you will then still have a strong foreign accent, but they will be able to understand you. Use the accompanying phrase book "in the field" to look things up as you need them.
Don't be put off by the slimness of the package. Less is more when you just want to pick up a smattering, because the less material there is, the more chance that you will remember it. Listen to the tapes again, and again, and again, and say the phrases.
The series is unfortunately going out of print.

Blake 7 Series 3 - Limited Collector's Edition [DVD]
Blake 7 Series 3 - Limited Collector's Edition [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars Series 3 and 4 are even better than Series 1 & 2, 19 Feb 2006
With series 3, Blake's 7 moved from being a very good series to an outstanding series. It's hard to say exactly why series 3 is better than series 2; I think a number of small factors add up. The weak actor who played Travis version 2 is gone; Gareth Thomas is gone; the stories are, on the whole, slightly better. The special effects are still low-budget BBC, but that doesn't matter so much as the scripts and the actors.
If you like SF at all: buy this series.

Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes: Fifty Tantalizing Problems of Chess Detection
Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes: Fifty Tantalizing Problems of Chess Detection
by Raymond Smullyan
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful book, 12 Feb 2006
Smullyan introduces the reader to a kind of logic puzzle which uses the rules of chess. You do not need to be a chessplayer to understand and enjoy these problems; you just need to know the moves. The book presents successively harder problems, the idea being that your skill increases as you go through the book. Most problems are set in little Holmes/Watson stories that are entertainingly written, and add to the enjoyment of the book. If you enjoy using your brain, you will enjoy this book a lot.
The only negative comment I have concerns the price; I bought my copy, new, in the USA, when it was first published in 1979.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as "The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes", 12 Feb 2006
Get this if you really enjoyed "The Chess Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes" by the same author, and want more. Otherwise, try the Sherlock Holmes book first.

The Penguin Guide to Bargain Compact Discs
The Penguin Guide to Bargain Compact Discs
by Ivan March
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars It WAS great, but now it's out of date, 19 Feb 2005
This used to be one of the most useful books a music-lover could buy. But, published in 1998, it's now sadly outdated. Many of the recommended CDs are no longer available, and of course a lot of CDs have appeared in the last 7 years. It's still of some use, but a new edition is long overdue.

The Research Driven Investor: How to Use Information, Data and Analysis for Investment Success

4.0 out of 5 stars Great content, shoddy hardback, 12 Jan 2004
The content of this book is first-rate. Absorb it, and you will become a more successful investor.
It is all the more regrettable that the publisher has seen fit to cut costs on the production. Although a "hardback", the pages are not sewn in signatures, but are held together by a cheap glue backing that would disgrace a paperback. The result is that a book which could inspire your investing for years, will fall apart before you finish reading it. I hope the author finds a different publisher for his next book.

China Off the Beaten Track
China Off the Beaten Track
by Brian Schwartz
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine book, but the China described no longer exists, 7 Sep 2003
This is an informative and well-written book. In the early to mid 1980s I'd have said: Don't visit China without it. However, China has changed so much since then that the book is quite useless as a guide to getting around in China now. So why have I given it 4 stars? Read it if you want to know what it was like to travel around China 20 years ago; to get perspective on where China has come from; to learn how to approach off-the-beaten-track travel. But if you need to know (e.g.) what kinds of hotels are available in Yangshuo, get the latest copy of the Lonely Planet guide, not this book.
