Stick with 2010, 2 Sep 2011
I purchased this as an upgrade for my Family Tree Maker 2010 program in the hopes it would improve my ability to merge records with the information I already knew.
Installation was fairly straight forward on my Windows 7 laptop and (after backing up my 2010 files just incase) importing the files was easy. There is little change from the 2010 version. Most noticable is the colour scheme, which defaults to the Ancestry scheme of green hues. After a couple of days, and needing to uninstall Internet Explorer 9 to stop all the incessant error message when trying to view records within the program, I came across an issue with one of the record sets.
When trying to merge said the record set with an individual, the program would just crash. No explanation or warning, just closed down. After checking the Ancestry website, which lists various 'fixes' for a crashing program (none of which fixed my problem) I emailed Ancestry Support only to be met with prewritten replies. After explaining for the 4th or 5th time that I have already followed the steps on their website, including uninstalling and reinstalling the program, they finally decided there is a deeper issue and requested I email an error log (with details how to do this) and they would get the developers to look into it.
Interestingly, the same record set and individual does have a problem in FTM2010, however, this program can handle it and simply produces an error message allowing you to proceed with a person merge only. I have reverted to FTM2010 for my tree and will continue to use that until Ancestry can assure me the problem is fixed.
I'm very glad I backed up my 2010 files!
On a more positive note, FTM2011 does allow you to download a tree from the Ancestry website, including all its media files, so you don't have to re-add them manually as is currently required. As far as my experience goes (given I only used it for 2 days) this is the best part of the program.
