These were everything you could hope for in a name badge. A combi clip, though everyone seemed to use the clip rather than the pin!

The Giant of Jum
The Giant of Jum
by Elli Woollard
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £11.38

5.0 out of 5 stars A giant "thumbs up" for this hilarious rhyme and artwork!, 18 May 2015
This review is from: The Giant of Jum (Hardcover)
This is one of those books whose neatly penned first verse instantly tells you that you're in for a treat! In rhymes which nicely roll off the tongue, we are introduced to a grumpy giant, very humorously pictured by the brilliant Benji Davies. One of my favourite pages pays homage to an earlier giant of "Beanstalk" fame, but this Giant of Jum is altogether rather more endearing. As the story unfolds, he becomes less grumpy and the author has great fun with variations of his "Fee Fi Fo Fum" chant. All ends happily for the now loveable giant and the young hero (who just happens to be called Jack!). I think all children will enjoy this witty story in rhyme and the funny detail in the stylish pictures as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful tale full of humour, warmth and charm!, 1 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This large, colourful book is a wondrous creation! In fact, it could almost be some long-lost Disney classic, which is not entirely surprising as Lenton is an accomplished animator as well as illustrator. How best describe the soft-edged pictures? Elegant, witty and charming are three words which immediately spring to mind. The tale is told in rattling rhyme of a frightening dragon and some nincompoop knights who attempt to hunt it down. I particularly liked Sir Brainbox with his spare specs balanced atop his helmet! When the dragon finally appears, it's not quite what is expected, but I won't give the secret away.
Every spread of this book is supremely designed, with the text fitting perfectly round the various scenes which are populated with wonderfully depicted characters. Children (and adults) will love the detail in the brilliant pictures (see if you can spot the tiny snail who makes an appearance on every spread!).

My Rhino Plays the Xylophone: Poems to make you giggle
My Rhino Plays the Xylophone: Poems to make you giggle

5.0 out of 5 stars A funny punny book!, 26 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a wonderful book to dip into (don't take it all at once, you might get pun-ch drunk!) and it should really make you giggle. The publisher's blurb claims it will amuse readers aged 7 to 107 and for once this seems true -- I'm nearer 107 than 7 and it certainly amused me! Denton here presents many well-honed funny poems with lashings of alliteration and strong rhymes throughout. All the poems are well-crafted and pared down to avoid any waffle. Not that he doesn't use obscure words when needed which will stretch a child's imagination and vocabulary -- "umbrage" and "wraithlike" make an appearance, for instance. I particularly liked his take on Bread and Butter and his observations about Rabbits. So, all in all, this is a great fun collection from a British writer who's more in the Prelutsky camp than the Rosen one, so if you want a bunch of funny poems strong in rhyme and rhythm, this is definitely the book for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully illustrated Tarot, 20 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very nicely packaged set of Tarot cards. It contains an informative book by Mary Packard about the cards included which are based on a 15th Century pack produced for a wealthy Italian family. The odd card missing from the original pack has been cleverly recreated by the illustrator Rachel Clowes. In fact, the high standard of illustration helps to make this beautifully produced boxed set even more special. It was a nice touch too, to include a purple satin Tarot cloth. All round, a lovely production which would make a handsome gift for anyone.

This review is from: Dust 'n' Bones (Paperback)
This book contains 10 stories exceptionally well illustrated by the author. The drawings are so good naturedly funny that they add great fun to the creepy stories. It should appeal to all readers who enjoy a chuckle along with a tingle down the spine!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bursting with good humour, 8 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is full of fun and excitement. Illustrator Mike Byrne has made the characters extremely amusing (the aliens are particularly hilarious!) and the depiction of the racing car is so convincing that you almost believe it COULD go up into space! The pictures are wonderfully colourful with just the right amount of detail to keep young children totally engrossed. A big bonus is the 3D cardboard model of the car which "pops up" to provide a toy to supplement the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny story in rhyme with stunning pictures, 8 Jun. 2013

This review is from: Cats Ahoy! (Kindle Edition)
The cunning cat Alfonso who leads his mob of mean-looking moggies must be the funniest feline pirate since T.S. Eliot wrote of Growltiger over 70 years ago. He manages to hoodwink the smug Trelawney P. Craddock and ... well, I won't spoil the story, suffice to say, the final page contains an extremely clever pun. As if that wasn't enough, what helps to make this book even more outstanding is the superb artwork by Jim Field. He has clearly had tremendous fun depicting the animals' expressions and adding humorous touches of his own -- notice two sea gulls having a tug o' war over a fish skeleton, for instance. No wonder this book won the Roald Dahl funny Prize when it was first published. I can't imagine who woudn't enjoy it.
