interesting but felt like there was a lot of supposition. Who knew what went on in the minds of these men. Survival being a heavy backdrop

2.0 out of 5 stars ... I found the hours of reading old Thatcher speeches boring., 19 Dec 2014
Whilst the solitary masturbation scenes over Salmondporn in the Torygraphy broom cupboards were certainly racy I found the hours of reading old Thatcher speeches boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars When Men were Men, 14 Aug 2010
This review is from: Isolation Shepherd (Paperback)
A story of a life of struggle in a remote highland glen. A battle against the elements where man and beast scratch out an existance between them. This isn't a story of hundreds of years ago but it was only 50 short years ago but the story reads like another world. Real weather and real people working in a real community where each day is taken on with a new vigour and energy. If you love dogs and wildlife this will take you away for a few days. A wonderful story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard life put onto paper, 30 July 2010
A wonderful insight into Highland and Island life in late 1800's for a travelling ploughman for hire. Makes you realise how much life has changed in Scotland in just 100 years. Makes a 10 hour day in an office look like a holiday.

5.0 out of 5 stars You feel the heat, 30 July 2010
This review is from: Attack State Red (Paperback)
Nothing much to say over what is said in the other 5 star reviews. Very well written and compelling reading. You can feel the heat and it makes you glad it isn't you out there.....Best book I've read on Afganistan by some margin. A great epitaph to all those who were part of the Battle Group.

Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets
Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets
by David Simon
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Never heard of The Wire, 26 April 2010
Read this as I was looking for something different to read and I never normally read crime, this is however not fiction and as such I found it riveting. I found the book very adsorbing and I liked the way that differnt situations within the same world were encompassed in the chapters. Sometimes its about the mundane admin, sometimes the dumb perps, sometimes the poor victims and sometimes the dumb cops or defence lawyers. Its written in a way that the scenario changes enough that its not repetitive when it easily could be given the volume of mayhem and violence.

The brutality of the world I found really eye opening. To the extent I've probably slightly changed some of my liberal view on drugs policy.

A very good read and lots of detail and lots of stories within the overall book. The policemen come across as guys doing a job that needs to be done. These guys are not some mythical supermen, just ordinary folk trying to keep a lid on things.

Book itself is very detailed and quite long but I didn't find that a problem as the stories and scenarios were quite varied. Its not an airport paperback read so if you are taking it on then set some time aside and brace yourself....

Spilling the Beans on the Cat's Pyjamas: Popular Expressions - What They Mean and Where We Got Them
Spilling the Beans on the Cat's Pyjamas: Popular Expressions - What They Mean and Where We Got Them
by Judy Parkinson
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars A book to dip into rather than read cover to cover, 15 April 2010
I have to agree with an earlier reviewer's description to it being a bit of a mixed bag. Interesting in parts and some of the conclusions I still have some doubts about. Not a bad book by any description or measure. I suppose you get exactly what it says and in that its a little bit of a let down as there is no hidden surprise.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK as an addition to an understanding of Churchill, 15 April 2010
A book that is best read in conjunction with a more indepth autobography. On its own its a little bit like eating a stock cube instead of a pot of soup.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different but not earth shartteringly funny, 15 April 2010
This review is from: Magnificent Bastards (Paperback)
Funny with some good lines. Story is easy enough to read and it keeps you interested in that you want to get it finished and see what happens. Not as funny as the man in the flesh but a decent enough read to get you through a hot summer week or a round the world flight.
