Polaroid Bumper Case for Cube Action Camera - Red
Polaroid Bumper Case for Cube Action Camera - Red

Price: £17.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Hanging around..., 15 Jan. 2015
This Bumper case has quickly become my preferred way to store and carry my Polaroid Cube camera and, although the Cube is already upholstered in a weatherproof-ish rubbery finish, this adds an extra layer of bump protection and weatherproofness which is always welcome. The case is simply, but cleverly, designed and simply envelops your Cube securely in silicon and allows you to hang the Cube from your neck or, if you choose to use the included carabineer clip, from a bag or belt-loop. Both the button and magnetic base still function through the case, although the magnetism is weakened and you can no longer see the indicator LED flash on top of the Cube, so there's no need to remove or move the case to use the camera.

Because the Cube is..well, a cube...you can also push it into the Bumper case sideways and that way the lens is protected from getting scratched while you're carrying it around. The quality of the lanyard cord isn't that special, it would have been cool to get something with the Polaroid rainbow woven into it for example, but it's functional and allows you to always keep the Cube ready to capture those unexpected moments. The Cube is actually small enough to hang from the lanyard inside your jacket or sweater so hiding it from view during transit, while still keeping it handy. It's a simple design, like the Cube itself, and although the quality is nothing special, it's a great way to keep your Cube with you. (Disclosure: item was received for independent review)

Polaroid Cube Lifestyle Action Camera (6MP) - Blue

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be square..., 14 Jan. 2015
Once you get past how tiny and cute the Polaroid Cube is (and it is) you begin to realise how much clever, thoughtful design went into something this simple looking. It couldn't be much simpler to use either, just grab, point and shoot - a short click gets you a still image (3328 × 1872 resolution JPG) and a long click starts a video recording in your choice of 720p or 1080p resolution. Still images aren't that special, about the same image quality as a good smartphone, but the Cube is really all about video clips and they look better with good colour reproduction and a surprisingly decent (though still a bit grainy) performance in low interior lighting. With no viewfinder it's hard sometimes to judge what you're actually filming and you might have to wait until you get home to see if you were pointing in exactly the right direction to capture your kid's once-in-a-lifetime skateboard trick or your puppy's first encounter with snow, but that's the kind of camera it is - meant for quickly capturing short video clips rather than for carefully considered movie-making. It's fitted with a fixed wide-angle lens with about a 120° view, meant to capture all of the action rather than the details, and so things close up to the camera will get a slight fish-eye distortion - but it works really well for capturing dramatic shots of the landscape whizzing past your bicycle or similar.

It's all very attractively presented and packaged, with just the Cube camera itself and a tiny USB cable for charging. There's a mini user guide, which you hardly need, and a card of pictorial instructions on how to open the weatherproof cap on the back to reveal the microSD card slot, the switch to select 720 or 1080 video resolution and the USB port. There's a magnet embedded in the base of the Cube and it's plenty strong enough to hold it in position in a variety of situations, assuming there's a bit of ferrous metal handy, but doesn't quite rival a tripod screw mount - you have to buy an accessory to get that. One nice design touch is that that cover cap is lined with rubber (embossed Apple-style with the product name and standards icons) and must contain a piece of metal as it can be attached to the magnet in the base of the camera as a little rubberised foot for it to sit on. In use, the camera bleeps to let you know it it just took a still or started a video recording and again when you stop recording and it's fairly loud, although you can turn it down or off using the accompanying app. The Cube isn't that easy to hold steady, being so small you tend to hold it between your fingers and inevitably it reveals every twitch or tremble in the finished video. You also can't help feeling that the lens is somewhat exposed during handling too, although it's recessed into the Cube there's nothing actually protecting it, although to be fair it's made from glass and not from more easily scratched plastic.

There's no onboard Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to connect to other devices so to view your videos or photos you have to pop out the microSD card and use it in another device, like your computer, or you can connect the Cube to your computer via USB and use the Cube's dedicated Mac or PC app' to access the contents (the app's automatically appear on the SD card so you always have access to them). The app's also let you access a few of the Cube's onboard settings, like adjusting the bleep volume or enabling/disabling a timestamp on your video clips. The Windows version works fine for me but I can't get the Mac version to connect to the camera, but that might just be me. The simple design is one of the best qualities of the Cube but also one of its limitations, if you want to make real practical use of it you're going to have to stump up for one or more of the accessories Polaroid have designed. There are a good range and they're mostly as nicely designed as the Cube itself, but you need to budget for them separately because the camera itself comes with nothing.

It's hard not to like the Cube, even though it's possible to complain about the odd missing feature or that the video isn't better quality, because it's so nicely designed and so cleverly focussed onto its primary task - it's a really fun video-clip camera, nothing more - but it's a really cool one. 5.0 out of 5 stars Juicy fruit..., 8 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Philips Viva Juicer is bigger than you might expect, somehow it looks like a mini-sized juicer in the pictures, but it's the real, full-sized thing. There aren't too many pieces to assemble, just 6 including the motor base and the big plunger for pushing scaredy fruit down into the belly of the beast. The components are all made from chunky plastic and feel like they might last for a while and most of the pieces simply stack one on top of the other to construct the juicer. Only the blade assembly needs any effort to attach as it has to be securely clicked onto the motor spindle. The motor base sits on a set of rubber sucker-feet, a clever idea for two reasons - one because it takes a bit of effort to attach and remove the blade assembly usually requiring both hands, secondly when you switch the juicer on and it spins up to speed the counterforce would almost be enough to send it scuttling across the worktop, so the suckers cleverly keep the whole thing in place while you work with it. There are two big latches, one either side, which hold the unit together and although they're easy to lock and unlock they do flop down clumsily and look a bit gormless when the juicer isn't assembled, so you might have to consider where you can store a fully-assembled juicer if there isn't room to leave it out on a worktop.

The juicer does feel very powerful and goes at a zippy speed, like a little spin drier, and it decimates most fruit and vegetables as you feed them in - a whole carrot gets devoured in about two seconds. The feed tube is wide enough to take a whole apple which makes preparation times much shorter - you only have to wash most fruit with no need to chop it first. However that feed-tube would also be wide enough for little hands to explore, so of course you'd have to keep it well away from inquisitive children and their toys. It's also surprisingly quiet, given how powerful it is, although it's mostly so quick at juicing it hardly matters. It manages to extract a good amount of juice from the fruit too, so you get your money's worth, but like most centrifugal juicers you get a lot of fine pulp in with the juice. The juice is (depending on your selection of fruits and veg') delicious with a thick almost smoothie-like consistency but that fine pulp does separate out and settle to the bottom (or float to the top) quite quickly, so have a spoon ready to stir it all back in again. The discarded pulp collects in a 'gutter' underneath and is reasonably dry and generally very easy to remove with no awkward corners to hide in. In fact the whole juicer is relatively easy to clean afterwards, all the main pieces are dishwasher-safe but I found it just as easy to do it the manual way. Only the blade assembly needs any special care and a washing-up brush is a big help in removing any remaining pulp.

We recently tried a 'slow' style juicer too -- one that slow-crushes the fruit through a fine sieve using a vertical auger -- and it's been interesting to compare the two types. They both produce delicious fresh juice but you do get much more fine pulp with this style of centrifugal juicer with the slow juicer making a more 'refined' style of juice. However you often get more juice from your fruit with a centrifugal juicer, that fine pulp bulks up the finished result and also gives a smoothie texture. The main difference has been in the price of the two juicers though - the slow juicer was almost three times the (current) price of this Philips Viva Juicer and although it produces fantastic juice it's hard to justify that difference. At Amazon's current (and hopefully ongoing) discounted price this Philips juicer is fantastic value for money, it's straightforward to use and to clean, it's powerful and it makes great juice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep it under cover..., 6 Jan. 2015
The ONLY Car Cover arrives boxed and in a vacuum bag, the kind fitted with a valve that lets you squeeze excess air out so it takes up as little space as possible, and the bag would be reusable with a little care and would make a good way to store the cover between uses - that's assuming you learn the technique of folding the cover up after use, which isn't as easy as you'd like. The cover itself is made from a manmade fabric with a mid-grey woven outer layer (it isn't foiled or silvered) which seems to repel moisture very effectively. Inside there's a softer, almost fleecy layer which should never cause any damage to your paintwork. The fabric is virtually lightproof and feels very strong and unlikely to stretch out of shape in use - it's also surprisingly light given the overall size and most people should manage to handle deploying it single-handed.

It can be a bit awkward the first time you deploy the cover, there's a technique to it and you might want to watch the instructional videos before you begin. In theory it's simple enough - the cover comes packed into a bag which is integral to the cover, it's hidden underneath the cover when it's on the car. Extending out of the bag are two straps with velcro pads at the end, you attach these pads to the carpet in your boot and shut the tailgate onto the straps, leaving the bag hanging out of the back of the car. Now start to pull the folded cover out of the bag and you should feel a metal rod sewn inside along the leading edge, this is slightly telescopic and when extended to its full length you can use it to guide the cover over the top of your car and down to the front. This means it's possible to deploy single-handed without running around the car pulling each side down individually. With the cover now fully over the car you carefully tuck the integral bag under the back and use the built-in cords at the front and back to give a tighter (and hopefully windproof) fit around the car. So far so easy. Now try all that in reverse and fold it all back up again into the integral bag, it's not so easy and it's this part that takes the practise. It can be done however and although at first you'll wish you had an extra pair of hands once you get the knack it's reasonably straightforward.

The cover should survive and protect in both wild winters and stifling summers, the fabric seems to have been made to last. The quality of manufacture is fine, though nothing special, but the cover is well shaped and generously sized (at least for our family Volvo) and the pockets to fit around wing mirrors are well-positioned and actually help line it all up neatly. I did manage to pull one of the metal eyelets off by mistake when tightening the cords a bit too vigorously but this isn't a critical failing and the cover still works perfectly well without it.

Compared to some covers I've seen this is a much better fabrication and although it's not the cheapest I think it measures up well to some of the pricey 'classic car' quality covers on the market. It should be equally effective for keeping that vintage motor in showroom condition or for keeping the snow and ice off the family hatchback while parked outside. The only thing I'm not sure about is where the snow-covered cover goes when you've peeled it off the car on that freezing Monday morning - I'm not sure I'd want it thawing in the boot all day. Still, it's a notably better-than-average product at a decent price. (Disclosure: item was received for independent review)

5.0 out of 5 stars On your hands and knees..., 5 Jan. 2015
I'm a relatively recent convert to Argan Oil, despite having very dry skin, and this InstaNatural version is the richest-feeling one I've tried. It arrives in a glass bottle with a pump dispenser that's relatively easy to control, so you can dispense as much as you need. The oil itself is a rich cold-press oil, slightly cloudy and with a faint (neither pleasant or unpleasant) nutty fragrance and it smoothes into the skin quite quickly. It works well as a facial moisturiser, used sparingly to avoid causing spots, and sinks in nicely so you aren't left looking too shiny. It's especially good used on nails and on hair, it leaves both looking shiny and healthy, and I found it incidentally beneficial as a scalp treatment too.

Personally, I've found Argan Oil is of most benefit for maintaining supple skin on my hands and face on a day-to-day basis rather than as a body treatment for very dry or itchy skin, where it doesn't seem to help me so much - although it's good for softening thicker skin, like on the knees and heels for example. Used on your hands it seems to treat everything at once - skin, cuticles and nails - and is a great antidote for hands that spend any time at all in a washing-up bowl, I speak from experience. Argan oil really seems to be one of Nature's best 'fix-all' inventions and this InstaNatural bottle offers a quality product in a generous size for the price, compared to others I've tried. 4.0 out of 5 stars Citrus freshener..., 5 Jan. 2015
I'd already been using a Vitamin C serum just before switching to the InstaNatural brand, so it's hard to be totally subjective about what it's done for my skin. The best thing I can say is the benefits I saw from the previous serum have continued with this one - so minor pigmentation issues have lessened and my skin looks and feels refreshed somehow. This serum has an appealing orange-citrus fragrance (and colour) and applies very easily although you have to work quite quickly because it seems to disappear into the skin so quickly. That also means you're tempted to use more than you might really need, so the eye-dropper dispenser is useful for rationing your daily dose. It leaves no obvious sheen or colour and it's recommended that a moisturiser is applied on top - I tried a couple of things, including pure Argan oil and a moisturiser, and had no problems or reactions with any of them.

It's always difficult to be sure about the benefits of specific skincare, especially if you're using multiple products, but for me a Vitamin C Serum seems to be more of a prevention than a cure. The most visible benefit has been with minor pigmentation, some slight blotchy marks on my cheeks, which have definitely lessened since starting with it. Apart from that it just seems to help keep things looking fresh and taut (even at my age!) and despite a slightly sensitive skin I've had no negative reactions to it at all. I also noticed less negative reactions to other things too, for example no redness after shaving, no pimples or spots and no ingrown hairs. It might be coincidence but it does feel like this Vitamin C serum helps to keep my skin in the best health, so it's renewing and repairing itself better than before - and I have no complaints about that! Tacwise 0396 18G/ 25mm Nails (Box of 5000)
Price: £3.32

5.0 out of 5 stars Driving it home..., 23 Dec. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These Tacwise 18G brads are ideal for fixing finishings like skirting boards or door-facings, the 18 gauge and small head on the nail means they should penetrate the finishings cleanly without splitting the wood and then can be easily countersunk with minimal filling-in needed afterwards. For anything structural you'll need a heavier, bigger-headed nail but for finishing woodwork they're just about perfect. We used them in a Tacwise nail gun and have had no problems at all with nails sticking in the gun or not driving into the wood, although we did need to countersink most of them manually.

They're galvanised so should be fine for exterior woodwork too although be aware that a galvanised nail can cause some discolouration in some hardwoods when exposed to moisture. If the finished wood is painted over then it shouldn't be an issue but if you're leaving the wood grain visible you might want to consider using a stainless steel version instead. For interior woodwork these galvanised brads should be great. They're not my first Tacwise product (and probably won't be the last) and we've been really happy with the quality and especially the value of everything we've tried from Tacwise so far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Using your connections..., 23 Dec. 2014
I needed a microHDMI-HDMI cable to connect a mini video camera to our TV for direct playback and this one from UGreen seemed to fit the bill nicely. The quality seems excellent at this price, you get a good 2m length and the cable seems very securely bonded into the plugs at either end, something you can't always say about cables. I chose the White ABS option but I'm not sure what the ABS refers to since the plugs are sheathed in metal not ABS. It looks and feels like a quality component and seems up-to-date with the HDMI specification, claiming to support Ethernet connectivity, 4K resolution and speeds up to 10.2Gbps - I haven't put all these capabilities to test yet but they should mean the cable will work with virtually every device you use it with. It worked first time with no problems for my mini camera and I'm most happy with it. There are cheaper microHDMI cables around but I wasn't too confident in their quality - thankfully with this UGreen version you don't have to spend much more money to get something much better quality.
