1.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this, I really did, 15 May 2016
This review is from: Dark Souls III (PS4) (Video Game)
I wanted to like this, I really did. After 150 attempts (no exaggeration) at the level just 10 minutes into the game, I really have lost the will to live. It's clear from other reviews that the 'challenge' to figure out such linear progression is a good thing. There is no way to lower the skill level. Everything wants to kill you with just one strike. And everything does. This game is like playing the final level of Final Fantasy with the level you have at the beginning of the game. Feel like I have been conned out of the purchase price. I haven'tplayed Dark Souls before and I won't ever be playing it again. I am utterly gobsmacked this game has the accolades that it does, it really is truly awful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Yet Another Remake from JJ., 25 April 2016
I wish JJ Abrams would stick to what he so obviously excels at...directing films as opposed to meddling in the writing of them. 10/10 for direction, special effects and nostalgia.....3/10 for originality. Even with an extremely strong performances from Driver, Boyega and notably Ridley, there simply is no getting away from the fact that this is nothing more than a remake of A New Hope.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back on Form!, 25 April 2016
OK so I was apprehensive after a very up and down DS9...plus the fact that Enterprise got canned after just 4 seasons. I need not have worried. This is back to basics Star Trek. For me, the best was always the original (obviously), then Voyager and then Enterprise. We are talking Sam Beckett (and even Al on one episode) plus an amazing supporting (and extremely attractive!) cast. Even Michael Dorn makes an appearance on the other side of the camera directing. The incidental music doesn't quite live up to the sweeping signature tune and there is way too much blue light on everything. Nevertheless great sci-fi...and so yes....features the obligatory time travel! I thought the blu ray quality was well worth the extra....yes a little grainy on occasion but WAY much better than my DS9 DVDs. After the recent Star Wars release (AKA The Force is a Remake of A New Hope)......please, please bring back Star Trek soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beats GTA 5- A True Thing of Beauty, 19 Oct. 2015
For me, just four things make a truly outstanding game; strong characterisation, a strong story, great audio and eye-wateringly beautiful graphics- all served up with a dash of clever controversy. Honestly I thought it would be years before anything came even close to GTA 5. Got bored and so bought the Witcher 3 having never played its predecessors. From the outset I was gobsmacked. Graphics pushed to the max, a music score to rival the great classical composers and a lead character who was a joy to play. The Witcher 3 goes beyond just a game in its narrative. I fell in love with each and every character; the good the bad and the ugly. The game at times pushes the boundaries and like GTA 5 this only serves to make it even more gritty and realistic. Never does anything feel fake or in bad taste. Geralt with all his brashness for the most part is a true gentleman and who in their right mind wouldn't want to rescue Ciri or fall for Yennefer or Triss? My only complaint is that it'll likely be ages before such a masterpiece graces us once again. In the meantime, the latest DLC Hearts of Stone is every bit as good.

5.0 out of 5 stars like the writer and director, 31 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was the one film I vowed never to watch....until a certain respected film critic (and by the accounts I can find, like the writer and director, a 'man of faith') lavished praise on this film. So I took the plunge and watched the film some 40 years+ after its initial release. It's fair to say that I loved every minute of it- such a credit that even now this film on a few occasions literally had me on the edge of my seat. As another reviewer has so rightly said, Kermode's passion for the film is evident throughout. It really is an utterly fascinating read. Well researched, great photography and worth the second edition alone for the highly personal transcript between Blatty and Friedkin- how I wish more screenwriters and directors would have such a close and candid relationship. Very highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cheap and not very good at all, 12 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was expecting great things after all the high reviews. So, to be clear about this product:

1. The lights do NOT rotate, they flash in a chaotic sequence in two obvious rectangular blocks on any wall
2. The lights do NOT respond to sound in anyway whatsoever, the microphone I am convinced is a decorative stick on as it does nothing.
3. The lights do NOT come with any useful instructions and the switches at the back make very, very little difference
4. The lights are different brightnesses- blue on one side barely works on any setting

The more positive things:

1. In a large room (like a banqueting hall), there is at least a colourful display
2.Comes with a DMX in and out socket....maybe with the correct additional kit this makes it sound sensitive?
3.It's ok for the price- although if you are a serious DJ please I implore you spend considerably more.
4. It's not very heavy, it's compact and it doesn't get at all hot
5. Delivery was prompt

1.0 out of 5 stars Seriously Rotten Tomato, 27 Dec. 2013
OK so it has great looking CGI....it's just that this does not equal a 'film' (there are some artistic exceptions....this film isn't one of them). Here's the premise of the film (no spoilers- there is nothing to 'spoil')- put as many random and meaningless events into as long drawn out monologue, stick in some guns, an alien or two, two A-listers and hey presto, you have a blockbuster. Really, really not. Watching paint dry has more meaning. No story, no emotion, no anything. Completely pointless.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Walkers Best Friend, 15 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the big brother of the (also excellent) Crimson guides, which means it comes with more walks and bigger maps. What makes these guides so effective are:
- Full OS Explorer 1:25000 (the best there is) map extracts
- Sensible waypoints with 6 digit grid references
- Interesting facts
- Friendly approach
- Great guidelines and directions (GPS and compass are still extremely useful, no book is that infallible)
- Fits in pocket

5.0 out of 5 stars Best GTA Yet, 19 Sept. 2013
Where to start? After what for me was a dip with GTA IV (who wouldn't miss the open world of San Andreas?), Rockstar then release this game which is at the absolute pinnacle not only of what GTA is capable of delivering- it's also at the pinnacle at what the current generation of consoles is capable of delivering. For starters, it looks simply stunning.

A word on the 'controversy' (no spoilers) if only for those new to GTA. It's been said by a small minority that this game is 'unintellectual'. This is complete rubbish. I have two degrees, a master's degree and run my own company. This game is a huge technical achievement from Rockstar- the amount of work and effort that has gone into this is simply awe-inspiring. The scripting is water-tight and the characters are extremely believable. It is one of the most intelligent game I have ever played, and I've played plenty over the years. It has also been said by a small minority that this game encourages violence and is responsible for moral decline (whose I wonder- I see nothing of the sort and at best anecdotal evidence of any link whatsoever to morality) . This is a paradox- do such people not realise that this is a game laced with satire? Such opinions of the moral mighty are misguided. The very fact that this game is so far removed from reality (thank goodness) is what makes it so much fun to play.

Above said, there are a couple of gripes I have with this otherwise exceptional game. Dare I say it....sometimes it does take itself a bit too seriously (too much Saint's Row, I know)- Trevor's character (a psychopath by anybody's definition) is at times very close to the knuckle and uncomfortable to play- by design. Books could be written on the player behind the player and GTA is clever enough to play on this in pairing Trevor with...well his exact opposite. At times bizarrely, this is with hilarious consequences. There are a few times where the language and violence are over-the-top and it does get just that little bit draining.

By anybody's standards this game has an 18 certificate- to its absolute credit it never ever has attempted to be anything else. And long may this continue.

Back to the game.

Pro's

1. Huge in every way.
2. It's finally a serious driving game. It's a good 10 minute journey at speed real time across the map on the main roads.
3. The music is, as always, spot on.
4. The best character development yet (too good at times).
5. Updated satire, clever, funny and at times disturbing.
6. Plenty of missions all with an intense attention to detail.
7. It looks amazing.
8. Sensible save points in that failing a mission half way doesn't return back to the beginning on a retry- the retry starts at half way (FINALLY!)
9. Great side missions
10. Top notch marketing and the game totally lives up to all its hype and controversy.
11. Nods to GTA IV storyline
12. Online and add-on potential is huge.

Con's

1. Realism is very uncomfortable on occasion with no option to opt out.
2. The swearing and violence at times can be over-the-top and draining.
3. No women as lead characters to temper the testosterone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood at its WORST, 4 Jun. 2013
I had huge expectations for this film reading all its glowing reviews.
And yet even before it started and the menu fired up, alarm bells were
going off. Explosions left right and centre, great CGI.....all
suggested a lack of substance. For the first 20 minutes, I couldn't
believe just how bad this film was. Drop the viewer into a complete
state of confusion to look good?.....except that this is always a risky
strategy, one which a only few films have eloquently pulled off, the
nearest comparable being The Matrix, which this most certainly isn't-
although it tries so hard to be in terms of style and delivery. Yes the
CGI and special effects are at times breathtaking. It's just such a
shame that the storyline was utterly ridiculous, disjointed, confusing,
dispassionate and so very, very boring. Great effects DO NOT make for a
great film necessarily. A note on casting. Like the film, this is truly
awful....what on earth was Leonardo Di Caprio thinking?! My wife
totally embraced the subject matter- she fell asleep and the only thing
stopping me from dozing off was the desperate hope that that this film
would improve. It didn't. Inception completely encapsulates all the
worst in Hollywood. Utter rubbish.
