Sven Väth in the Mix - The Sound of the Thirteenth Season
Sven Väth in the Mix - The Sound of the Thirteenth Season
Price: £6.19

4.0 out of 5 stars Exhilarating, 3 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a tale of two mixes:

The Night mix is a thumping, twisted, exotic and exhilarating techno workout that makes you wish you were a) dancing like a lunatic in Cocoon, and b) 21 again. Get through the first couple of tracks where Sven is just mixing by numbers and it's a masterfully blended demonstration of a genius on the turntables working his audience (even though I guess this was just studio recorded).

The Day mix is a half-arsed electronica effort that veers from stripped down nothingness to screechy wierdness with some naff vocals thrown in. It's not worth much except perhaps for poncing around in your Top Shop sunglasses not really paying attention to the music.

I own the last 4 Cocoon 'Sound of' albums and this is easily the best on the basis of the Night mix alone.

3.0 out of 5 stars Crystal clear top end, dull bass, 3 April 2012

I bought these to replace my Sennheiser CX300 IIs, the cable of which had broken for the second time. At first I was delighted with the increased clarity but then noticed something missing - the bass! It was just an amorphous lump of sound, no distinction at all, across a range of musical styles. No matter how much I shoved them into my ear canals the bass just did not show up. It's a real shame because at the mid and top end they sound great. Back to Sennheiser next time I think.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea, but poor workmanship, 4 Nov 2010

The case would be very good if it was made properly! The right hand side of the case is too low and partially obscures the screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's guide, 6 Aug 2009

This is an excellent book for anyone who can read music and has a basic level of piano ability. Whilst the explanations of chords and harmony can be overly technical at times, you can pick up a huge amount just by listening to the CD and playing the corresponding bars from the book.

The style guide is particularly rewarding, and in no time at all I was playing something that sounded vaguely like Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock etc, in that it was at least reminiscent of their style albeit much slower and less technical! I have the bebop and blues book in this series and they combine to provide a great library of material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb collection, 2 Mar 2006

This review is from: Jazz Funk Sessions (Audio CD)
What a fantastic album. All the best tracks from the Jazz-Funk world, plus some lesser known numbers. All classics, all showing great musicianship, even the slightly cheesy vocals don't detract from the toe-tapping happiness that this album brings.
'The Bottle' seems to crop up on a lot of collections but is always worth it. There's a great funky tune from Level 42 in their pre-pop days, Eddie Russ's keyboard classic and Roy Ayers doing his thing - who could want more? Buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Conveys the misery but not much else, 2 Oct 2002
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One can only begin to imagine the horror, misery and deprivation of fighting on the Russian front, but this book goes a long way to getting this across.
However what is missing is an insight into the motivation of Sajer. Why did he join the Werhmacht? What was in the mind of the German fighting man? How did they view the Russian population upon whom they visited such cruelty? How did his training in a crack SS division alter his mind-set?
Sajer spent most of his war in a state of absolute terror, and the final third of the book is more or less a constant tale of misery. It's not that I expect this kind of story to be entertaining, but it lacks any kind of historical of personal perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laid back funky sounds for real house music fans, 1 Aug 2000
Despite the dubious name, this one does exactly what it says on the cover. If you like the idea of grooving in bars then you should definately buy this. A refreshing blend of smooth cool funky house. I look forward to volume 2.
