5.0 out of 5 stars A highly recommended read!, 13 Oct. 2014

Graham Buxton has covered a vast and topical area for discussion in his latest book 'An Uncertain Certainty'. His grasp of so many disciplines becomes increasingly evident as one progresses through the chapters eg psychology TA (tolerance of ambiguity), business AI (no not Artificial Intelligence but Appreciative Inquiry). Some disciplines can have difficult linguistic perimeters but the author has made every attempt to make the ideas accessible to a wide audience. Well, some things will always remain challenging, eg perichoresis. As the author intimates, mystery is amongst us. It has been refreshing for me to be reintroduced to new approaches in theology after decades away. As Wittgenstein once suggested 'an honest religious thinker is like a tightrope walker. He almost looks like he's walking on air. His support is the slenderest imaginable. And yet it is really possible to walk on it'.

I am particularly impressed with the author's emphasis on the inclusivIty of 'both/and' as opposed to the exclusivity of 'either/or' which creates inevitable baggage (Creator and creation .. both should be honoured). My attention was especially caught by the interesting section on the relationship between science and religion, with mention of Kuhn (revolutionary paradigms), and I muse that the jury could still be out pondering whether water is wet or not .. but life is full of seeming paradox. Karl Popper's falsification test could struggle to start in this area. The work is the important thing and we are the 'workers not the master builders, ministers not messiahs' (Oscar Romero). So the business sense of AI (Appreciative Inquiry) comes into play with emphasis on concentrating on the good things in church rather than what's going wrong and needs fixing. Paul: ' ... if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think of such things'. Beware of the filling of church pews (business models) rather than worshipping God and highlighting His love in His creation. Also be wary of authoritarianism in church leadership and remember Luther insisting that function is the differentiation between laity and clergy. So pastoral partnerships between clergy/church leaders and congregation is a way forward, with emphasis on listening and dialogue.

In 'An Uncertain Certainty', Graham Buxton examines many more issues than I have mentioned in this review. Throughout he holds fast to his faith and counsels to 'take care not to lose one's bearings'. One certainty is that his book gave me much cause for reflection upon my own views and uncertainties.

I enjoyed reading this book, and highly recommend it for its scholarship and light touches of humour, but above all for its humanity and honesty.

Yet another brilliant romp through time with a lively cast of characters. Hugely enjoyable reading, with the pages tripping over themselves in their enthusiasm. Humour is there, as is also a more serious thread. Never has history been so much fun. More, please .......

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, 20 Sept. 2014

Delighted with this easy to assemble trolley. It is a perfect fit for the gap left by a relocated boiler and is now serving as additional kitchen storage and a vegetable rack. It looks good & I'm sure it would be great as a serving trolley as well. Excellent service from seller, so very pleased all around. Thank you.

If anything, this is better than the first St Mary's book, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The author has a light touch and writes with intelligence and wit. Great holiday reading .... in fact good at any time! I am now involved with the characters and look forward to further historical exploits. Awaiting a third, please ......
NB I tend only to write reviews when I've really enjoyed a book so high reviews only feature in my profile. Writing is not always an easy life, so thanks to all of you out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for our times, 25 Oct. 2013

Very readable, like all JKR - she can certainly tell a story. Social commentary and a study of the fragility of individuals run like threads throughout the novel, with acute observation of characters and their motives. Human nature with its strengths and weaknesses is explored, as is inequality of opportunity. A worrying yet accurate view of our modern society, gift wrapped in a good story.
N.B. Don't expect Harry Potter; it was made very clear that this was not written for children.
