5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to the Subject, 16 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is not about Alexander the romantic historical legend, who as apocryphal tale has it "wept salt tears at the realisation he had no more worlds to conquer." If you have come for the battle scenes, prepare for disappointment. This is a very detailed examination of Alexander's literary afterlife in ancient and medieval literature from China to Scandinavia. It is well-structured and written in an approachable style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm... overall good!, 17 Feb 2013

However, watch for mistakes in titling some of the tracks. For example, Mozart's Lacrimosa from the Requiem sounds remarkably like My Heart Will Gon On (and on... and on... and on) from the Titanic soundtrack.

The recipient of these headphones has had no complaint about their performance. She wanted them because "they look nice". Apparently, they also do the business in the sound department.

Prime Minister Portillo and Other Things that Never Happened: A Collection of Political Counterfactuals
Prime Minister Portillo and Other Things that Never Happened: A Collection of Political Counterfactuals

Edition: Hardcover

2.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Words, Tedious, 24 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Breaking the all-time record for glib, fatuous and tendentious nonsense this book heats history to lukewarm and then leaves it lying there half-baked. Fewer "smart" op-ed pieces and more rigorous, longer essays might have worked. As it is, this book is rather like stumbling into a conversation halfway through one of the interlocutors struggling to make a smart, telling point and failing miserably.

As an introduction at advanced level to the subject this works fine. It was certainly good enough for one of my lecturers to crib her material from...

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
Price: £0.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Incorrectly Catalogued, 24 Dec 2012

Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is one of the quintessential English pieces by Vaughan-Williams. It is also one most recognisable pieces of modern classical music. So are the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar. Buy this and you get the latter, not the former. Wrong composer, wrong piece. Fortunately, I also like Elgar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Edition, 19 Dec 2012

Having laboured through the prose translation, which while very fine is not exactly pulse-raising stuff, this was a refreshing and far pacier translation that entertained and entranced

Sort of reminds me of Damon Albarn but rather funkier and more interesting. And, yes, like virtually everyone else I only found it after watching that bloody IKEA advert... damn their Scandinavian furniture!

This lead does what it is intended to do. It neither heals the sick nor enables time travel: it does, however, transfer data and charge an MP3 player.

Making Money (Discworld Novels)
Making Money (Discworld Novels)
by Sir Terry Pratchett
Edition: Hardcover

2.0 out of 5 stars By the (serial) numbers, 8 Dec 2007
While there are still flashes of genuinely inventive writing and humour, I felt this was a bit mechanical in execution and could have been presented as a leaner, taughter and funnier book. The sub plots seem contrived and the denouement is particularly weak. What was lacking in this book was a genuinely threatening opponent for the protagonist: the role filled by Reacher Gilt in Going Postal and in Night Watch by Carcer. I am a big fan of Terry Pratchett, but this goes in the pile marked "Disappointing".
