4.0 out of 5 stars Bloody Revenge, 19 Oct. 2014

Kristian returns to his Norse based strengths here telling the story of how Sigurd's crew came to be. This is a very enjoyable tale of revenge that gives us an excellent back story to the crew of the Raven series. Filled with action from the beginning this is another excellent page turner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid continuation of the tale, 5 Feb. 2014

Having read this series from the beginning and having read much of Mr Cornwell's work, I found this book to be of his usual high standard of historical fare, well researched, descriptive battles although I do feel our hero Uhtred is plodding along and rehashing similar situations (Issue's with the church, being both friend and foe of Dane's) to earlier books in the series. With all of Bernard Cornwell's books you know you are getting a solid novel thats allwaysworth a read.

This review is from: Legends (Kindle Edition)
A collection of shorts all set in the fantasy genre in appreciation of "Legend" David Gemmell. Some are good, some are not worth picking up if the price is down as a story will fill in a twenty to thirty minute read during a commute to work. Nothing special.

James Clavell is one of my favourite authors and King Rat one of his finest offerings. Although in my mind not as good as the legendary Shogun or Tai Pan the novel is still a five star novel.
Telling the story of life in a WWII P.O.W camp and the power struggles between the convicts all fighting against the conditions of their confinement and scrambling to become the "King".

3.0 out of 5 stars solid but unspectacular historical fare., 24 Nov. 2013

This book tells of a Viking raid into France and follows the actions of some protagonists on either side. The story or the general jist of an attacker against a defender has been told many times by many other authors and Vaughn Heppners incarnation of the viking history is not on a par with Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Series or Giles Kristian's Raven series. All in this is an average book worth picking up and reading when available at a low Kindle Price. For more indepth telling of the viking age stick with Cornwell or Kristian

The Heroes: A First Law Novel
The Heroes: A First Law Novel

A three day battle for power in The North. This book flows from start to finish at an electric pace. In depth battle scenes, characters who care only for themselves. Dark humour aplenty. Abercrombie specialises in given us characters who straddle the lines between good and bad (frequently). Numerous characters from the first law trilogy make reapperances here, some given more book time than others. all in though this was exactly what I was hoping for. would say though that its best to switch the brain off when reading and just enjoy the endless battle for The North.

Excellent new fantasy author and series here. John Gwynne has created a compelling story rich with character and action. Told in a POV style similiar to GRRM, Gwynne has created a series of charcaters that the reader has an interest in regardless of what side their allegencies may or may not fall. One of the problems any new fanatsy suffers from is having a history, religions, myths, the people that the reader will care enough about to allow the story to progress, here Gwynne has excelled. I for one am looking forward to the follow up which can't come soon enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginning, 24 Nov. 2013

A J Smith has clearly taken time to create this solid fanatsy debut. The time spend on creating the back story myth and religion of the lands and peopleis clear for all to see. At times though this indepth knowledge is given too much of the story and the progression of the main characters is slowed. Overall though this is an excellent beginning and i look forward to more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non stop enjoyment, 24 Nov. 2013

Joe Abercrombie's First Law is an excellent Fantasy Trilogy. Like George RR Martin Abercrombie leaves it to the reader to decide if their favourite characters fall on the side if good or evil. Logen Ninefingers and San Dan Glokta are two prime examples of characters whos actions can repulse you yet you still find yourself looking forward to their next chapters. If I had to have one critism of the trilogy it would be the journey aspect of the middle book which seemed to drag on. Overall though the enjoyable characters and the vivid battle scenes allowed the books to flow onwards. I would recommend Abercrombie's books to anyone who prefers their fantasy books low on magic and high on character.
