What an interesting film and an insight into into another culture. Great performances from the main characters, emotionally charged. The old father is played brilliantly.

3.0 out of 5 stars slow-goes no where really, 27 Nov. 2011

I had read great reviews about this but to be honest, it was a disappointment- very slow. A study of a woman who is experiencing problems in her relationship and takes herself off to a friends. She develops a soft spot for a young guy (her friends son) and misreads his attention. I struggled with the fact that she appeared to be an intelligent woman but in no time completely "lost" herself and spent all her time with teenagers, behaving like a teenager and tended to ignore her life time friend. Not great....took my mind off the ironing though, just:}

I had bought this for my son who pointed out it is mainly a compilation of data from wikipedia. I should have selected more carefully and checked reviews etc-so a waste of money really!

Happy Like Murderers
Happy Like Murderers
by Gordon Burn
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read, 24 Oct. 2011
This review is from: Happy Like Murderers (Paperback)
Recieved this on time and in great nick. I have this already but in it'original cover. I bought this for a friend. It isnt an easy read but is compelling in the simplicity of the style of writing-given the nature of the crimes committed. If you are interested in human behaviour then this book gives an insight into what is thankfully, a rare behaviour in the couple Fred and Rose West.

There are many more offenders in this book and I would imagine they were never brought to trial for their rape of young children.I can only hope that somewhere deep within they feel some level of shame that stays with them for what they did. Fred took the cowards way out, Rose lives a life of security and warmth that she never allowed her children to have- an unbalanced world or what?

Well written, drives home the horror but manages to do this in a balanced, non hysterical style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 18 April 2011
This review is from: Mother [DVD] (DVD)
This is one of the finest examples of Korean film making- an outstanding mix of comic, disbelief, suspense, culture and "who dunnit"- it is just outstanding.
The "Mother" is played by an amazing actress who manages to portray every spectrum of emotion and age. She looks old and worn down by life and the constant goings on of her son. Then in another scene, she looks radiant. When her son is taken away by the police she is so distraught and the scene is heartbreaking.

Her "son" portays this incredible idiotic being and it's hard to belive he can function in life without her at his side, in fact the film proves that he can't.

She takes the commitments of motherhood to a whole new level- a MUST see if you love Korean and Asian film making.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated thriller, 18 April 2011

Now this makes me feel like shouting from the roof tops- "Please everyone, you have to see this film."
Everything from the style of production and directorship to the acting is first class. The plot is so clever, it takes you down one road, then takes a detour and you end up somewhere totally unexpected.
Some of the scenery is stunning, some of the moments in the film stop you from breathing momentarily and everything about it keeps you engaged.
My ONLY reservation was the choice of the leading man, great for the plot in terms of acting and delivery and absolutely watchable, but as a romantic character-then no, I didnt see it.But that is me trying to find one negative thing about the movie.
One of my top 10 films ever.

I was very much looking forward to watching this film as I appreciate the work of Mike Leigh and the film was eagerly awaited by critics and media.
Overall, I thought Jim Broadbent was Jim Broadbent. His performance was as you would expect, perfect for the role and that is ofcourse why he was cast. Ruth Sheen was equally perfect for the role- but neither of them were pushed as actors. The delivery was safe and in keeping with other work they have done previously. So for me it was all too safe. In fact I grew tired of Jim Broadbents tone and manner of dialogue.
Lesley Manville seemed to be the only one doing any real acting- yet she was overlooked for an award.

It all plodded along, everything was as expected and I really cannot see that the film is being hailed as one of Mike Leighs best- what reason? It isn't the script-there was nothing in there that stayed with you after you finished watching it. Overall the actors were all safely cast, I just don't know.I for one was not impressed and wouldn't recommend it as a film to spend money on, there are far better ones' out there. Probably a good TV film for a sunday afternoon.
