4.0 out of 5 stars For those interested in financial and/or monetary history, this ..., 2 Dec. 2015

For those interested in financial and/or monetary history, this is a fascinating story of how the bankers of the Middle Ages operated, and how much power they had over monarchs, in this case the Hapsburgs. These bankers were also more successful than the Medicis, the most famous of the medieval bankers.

Islam gets a bad press in the West, and this book demonstrates why this is often misplaced. Baghdad must have been some place at the end of the 1st millenium.

3.0 out of 5 stars An introduction to the banking sector, 13 April 2013

A good basic introduction to the issues facing the banking sector, though it leaves one rather depressed about whether regulators will ever be able to impose adequate capital requirements on the industry

3.0 out of 5 stars The End of Influence, 10 May 2010

This review is from: The End of Influence (Hardcover)
I was a little disappointed in this book - essentially it says that the US has misspent its wealth and is now in a much weaker position both politically and economically. It warns us to watch out for the Sovereign Wealth Funds and for greater government interference in economies. This is all very true but hardly new. Brad DeLong is an excellent economist/economic historian and always worth reading but I was not bowled over this time.
