The Literature of Georgia: A History
The Literature of Georgia: A History
by Donald Rayfield
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £24.13

5.0 out of 5 stars The David Attenborough of Caucasus Studies, 10 Jan 2013

Some academics know their stuff, but need a humanoid minder to interpret their utterances into intelligible English. Modern academics seem to succeed on their former pop star credentials, pretty face or banal delivery. Professor Donald Rayfield fits into neither category. He has depth and breadth of knowledge, the ability to communicate his message clearly, concisely and in an entertaining manner. Above all he assumes his reader/listener has more than 2 brain cells to rub together (much like David Attenborough).

His modest preface explains that he is filling a gap until a better qualified native Georgian steps up to undertake the task of writing a more comprehensive history of Georgian literature. Professor Rayfield makes clear that he has made decisions based on available evidence, wise counsel of other academics and his own subjective assessment.

The result is a fascinating insight into the literature of a small country with an obscure language. Georgian has rescued rare ancient foreign texts from destruction, as copies survived in Georgian translation. It also boasts from fine writers in poetry and prose down the centuries. Donald Rayfield has recently published a translation of one of these: Otar Chiladze's 'A man was going down the road.'

This is well worth reading, as are Donald Rayfield's other books on Georgia. If you get the chance to hear him speak, particularly about Georgian language, then take it. He's the master of ripping yarns.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last something that works with my Mac, 16 Jan 2012

I'm a Mac user with a problematic disk drive and no help from Apple. I bought a couple of external drives, that sellers alleged worked on Macs, but didn't. I spotted this one recommended on the discussion boards of Apple's own site.

I agree that the software installation is a bit of a faf, but that is minor. CDs and DVDs now work without having to lug my computer to Apple to get fixed for large sums.

A CD got scratched in my Mac disk drive, but LaCie coped with that fine and there is no discernible distortion or disk hops.

I was advised to get an electric brush by the dentist. I tried one years ago, but didn't like it. This is easy to use and certainly gives an all over clean, removing stains and plaque. Charge lasts about a week and the charger is easy to use. Good value for an effective product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ripping yarn, 4 Sep 2011

This is the big book of Georgian literature, equivalent to Beowulf. It was written in the reign of Queen Tamar and includes some strong female characters. The book is a heroic tale of struggle against thwarted love, separation, external threats and inheritance. It embodies the central values of Georgian people, including brotherhood, loyalty, hospitality and generosity. The early portrait of the knight, in tears, chopping the heads off whole legions of soldiers, gives an idea of the passionate, but strong Georgian male archetype.

Translated by Marjorie Wardrop, sister of the first British ambassador to Georgia, it retains the poetic tone of the original.

This took a while to germinate, but was useful to fill an empty space after a crop was cleared. Keeps weeds at bay, brings nutrients to the surface and useful addition to the compost. My favourite green manure is phacelia. That is the easies to grow, reseeds, but doesn't become invasive and is a great bee plant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable piece of kit, 4 Sep 2011

This is a piece of foam covered in sturdy cloth. On one side are rings with plastic teeth protruding from them. I lie on it in thin teeshirt and trousers. It's easy to read a book for half an hour lying on the mat. It took a while to position correctly, so enough teeth were reaching upper back and shoulders. Surprisingly relaxing and certainly encourages the metabolism to work more efficiently. It also affects the heart, so I felt a few jumps occasionally, without flipping over into palpitations. Easy to use and stow away. I lie on it with a travel neck pillow, for comfort and support. Great health aid for me.

Product was not as described. My computer failed to recognise the hardware or be able to install the software. I tried everything to get round this, but it seems to be definitely a Windows product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine show of his strengths, 5 Nov 2010

I first heard this Uruguayan singer through a friend. He has a voice that is instantly recognisable. It is harder edged than Gardel, with an expressive quality in various song stories - but definitely macho. He's famous for Cambalache. My favourite is Tarde, the song of a man hurt by past loves, but who avoids slipping into self pity. The sound quality is good for old recordings (better than Gardel discs).

Track listing:

1. Dios Te Salve M' Hijo
2. Quien Hubiera Dicho
3. Si No Me Engana el Corazon
4. Cambalache
5. Tarde
6. Nada
7. Amor en Remolino
8. Romantica
9. Rencor
10. Barrio Pobre
11. Maria
12. Cumparsita, La
13. Al Mundo le Falta en Tornillo
14. Mano a Mano

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear version, 22 Sep 2010

I heard this version when watching 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' and return to it regularly. Recently I've heard other versions that sound woolly. Today I decided to buy this version and it's forced me to use the MP3 downloading system for the first time. Well worth it. It's a beautiful piece. An old version and probably not the most technically clean or pure recording. Great version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Behind the blog, 23 Aug 2010

This review is from: Track Your Plaque (Paperback)
I came across William Davis' Hearscan blog and have read lots of the posts. There he focusses on heart scan tests, eliminating wheat, supplementing omega 3, Vitamin D3 and a few other bits. I bought the book hoping for more detail on the tests. I know he's busily updating his book, but I didn't realise how far behind the content was here compared to the blog. It's still interesting and useful, though I'd recommend that you wait for the new edition.

He provides good detail on why Dean Ornish's work is so limited, with specifics on the outcomes from that famous study.

This guy is doing great work on empowering people to look after their health (inexpensively) and reverse coronary heart disease. If you want to avoid heart attacks and live a long and healthy and happy life, follow his guidance. If you smoke and don't ever want to give up, then he's not for you.
