The Global Minotaur (Economic Controversies)
The Global Minotaur (Economic Controversies)

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read along with books like Debunking Economics by Prof Steve Keen, 1 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As the title suggests, a very global outlook on global macroeconomics from the second world war to the present day.
A must read along with books like Debunking Economics by Prof Steve Keen, and Prof Richard Werner's "New Paradigm in Macroeconomics: Solving the Riddle of Japanese Macroeconomic Performance".
To summarise, he sees American as the great driving force, often to it's own advantage. To quote Mandela "Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings."

But watch out if you are trying to use it to program a DOM module using an IDE socket. The rows need to be reversed. This can be achieved using two IDE sockets and a ribbon cable. Or you can purchase a swap over pcb.

On Intelligence
On Intelligence

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and thought provoking, 19 Mar. 2014

This review is from: On Intelligence (Hardcover)
I love the way that the Hierarchical Temporal Memory of the neo-cortex is reverse engineered, and how it matches up so well will observations in behavioural economics made many years later in books such as Daniel Kanehman's Thinking:Fast and Slow.
Had a look at the respective open source libraries, but this is still an early stage technology.

Loved the bit later on on what Jeff thinks consciousness is.

1.0 out of 5 stars Spongy, hard work, low capacity, 19 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not a quality item at all, I would ask for my money back if it didn't cost almost as much as the pump itself to return it.

The cylinder capacity is small, so it takes many pumps to fill even a 23mm tyre.
As you reach 110psi, it gets really really spongy, and difficult to pump.
Also I had to tie a piece of string around the head + wheel to stop it being pushed off the presta valve as I approached max pressure.

I will now have to spend £30 on a decent pump on the High Street, and chuck this one in the bin.
Note to Amazon <----------******* Wake up and start rooting out the fake reviews please.

Essential Business Finance: A Complete Guide to Starting, Expanding and Selling Your Business (Business Development Series)
Essential Business Finance: A Complete Guide to Starting, Expanding and Selling Your Business (Business Development Series)
by Paul Barrow
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick to read, very useful, 6 Jan. 2014
Provided much food for thought for this business owner.
Illustrated by real life case studies throughout.

The section on grooming your business for sale is great.
Especially liked the final chapter taking you through the (rather gruelling 10 months) sale of a small-ish software business from start to finish.

It is very concise, so only took around 3 hours to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good summary of where we are, 10 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A nice summary of where we are today. Some good suggestions going forward. I only hope policy makers are reading this and can find a way to present it to the voters in a way that it has a chance of being implemented. Otherwise the inevitable 'selling off of the family silver' will make life increasingly hard for the younger generation. Plenty of mention of the baby boomers, called 'the selfish generation'.
Only three stars as in my opinion it doesn't go into enough depth on fixing the situation.
Here's an idea for a follow up: "Preventing democracies running up overdrafts".

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly less warm than the AuraGlow, 3 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought one of these plus an AuraGlow 6W GU10.
This one produced more light. In fact it is way brighter than the 10yr old 50W halogen it replaces.
But the colour was less warm.
So I will be buying the Auraglows instead.
But its horses for courses. If you like your light a bit more daylight-like and you want loads of oomph, then buy these.

The Secret Life of the Grown-Up Brain: The Surprising Talents of the Middle-Aged Mind
The Secret Life of the Grown-Up Brain: The Surprising Talents of the Middle-Aged Mind
by Barbara Strauch
Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very scientific, 23 Oct. 2011
This is more for your casual reader on the topic than a detailed intellectual compilation.

Private Life of the Brain by Susan Greenfield is a much more engaging read.
Not quite as good, but better than this is "Your Brain:The Missing Manual" by O'Reilly books.

Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal
Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal
Price: £9.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Informative, 23 Oct. 2011
The research and references in this book make it worth reading alone. The bible of the food waste industry.
We still don't really know what the supermarkets are up to. I hope Tristram continues his lobbying to open this particular kimono.

His observations on the truly collosal effect of the UK foot and mouth outbreak on GHG emissions from meat manufacture are enlightening. If the resulting Animal By-Products order of 2001 is ever repealled then maybe some sense will return to the developed world's animal feed market.

Read it and be informed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ramblings on Rubbish, 23 Oct. 2011
The whole book is an opinion piece written by a queen of the quangos.
So I learned nothing new (but I do have an MSc in Renewable Energy).
So maybe one for absolute newbys....?

You would be far better off reading:
1. How Bad are Bananas:The Carbon Footprint of Everything by Mike Berners-Lee
2. Uncovering the Global Food Scandal by Tristram Stuart
3. The Weather Makers by Tim Flannery
